LOGINAlexander:
The moment her hand moved, every instinct I possessed noticed it. She was fast. Not trained, not disciplined, but undeniably fast. Her fingers sliced through the air, aiming directly for my face with a force that would have surprised most men.
I didn’t flinch, I caught her wrist only inches before her palm could connect with my cheek.
The room fell into absolute silence.
She stared at me, breath uneven, her chest rising and falling beneath the plain gray servant’s dress she had insisted on wearing instead of the gown Helena had prepared. Her amber eyes burned with fury. Not fear. Not submission. Fury.
For several moments, neither of us spoke. Then a small smile tugged at the corner of my mouth. It was barely noticeable, but it was there.
She blinked, almost as if she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.
I couldn’t remember the last time someone had tried to strike me. Years, perhaps decades. Most people couldn’t even meet my gaze without trembling. Yet this slave, the very first thing she had done after entering my chambers was attempt to slap me.
A low chuckle escaped me.
She frowned. “What’s so funny? You have clearly lost your mind.”
I looked at the hand still trapped in mine. “You.” Her brows knitted together. “You attempted to assault your Alpha, and I am the one who lost my mind? I really am starting to grow curious about the way your mind works.”
“You don’t get to ask questions about how my mind works.” She snapped, making me raise an eyebrow.
“You don’t sound remorseful.” I stated casually.
“I’m not.” She snapped. “I wouldn’t have attempted it to just look for mercy once done.”
Another smile threatened to surface. This woman… she was unlike anyone I had ever met.
I released her wrist. She immediately stepped back, putting distance between us, rubbing her wrist as though deciding whether she should try again.
“I have to admit,” I said, “you are… something.”
Her eyes narrowed. “What exactly is that supposed to mean?”
“It means I’ve met warriors with less courage.” I said casually as I turned to walk toward the fireplace.
“Courage?” She gave a short, bitter laugh. “You think this is courage?”
“What would you call it?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Common sense.”
That answer caught me off guard. “Common sense? Slapping the Alpha who can actually have your life in an instant… you call that common sense?”
She folded her arms. “If someone buys people like cattle, I think they deserve worse than a slap.”
There it was, the fire. Unfiltered and untamed. Most slaves learned quickly to hide their thoughts. Serena practically threw hers at my face.
My wolf stirred. She isn’t afraid of us.
“She is angry,” I muttered. “That is a fine difference,’
I walked toward my desk and leaned casually against its edge. “You know who I am.”
“I know exactly who you are.” She said, looking me dead in the eye, choosing not to pretend.
“And yet you still raised your hand against me.”
“And I would do it again if I get the chance.” Her honesty was almost refreshing.
I studied her more closely. The physicians’ report had mentioned scars, and they hadn’t exaggerated. Thin white lines crossed her forearms. A faded burn marked her shoulder. Her hands were rough, shaped by years of labor.
She held herself differently from the other women Helena usually presented. They entered with lowered heads. She stood straight despite everything, even now, even after attempting to strike the Alpha of Petrova.
“I should punish you.” The words hung in the air.
She didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she lifted her chin. “Then do it. I’ve endured far worse than whatever you can throw.”
I found that strangely irritating. “You believe that’s what I want?”
“I don’t know what you want.” She said, glaring at me. “All I know is that men like you enjoy punishing women for their pleasure. So, by all means… go on.”
“I asked Helena to bring you here.”
“Did you manage to inspect the newest purchase?” She asked, pouting sarcastically. “I hope that I was to your liking?” She rolled her eyes at me before looking away.
“Tell me something, Serena.” I said, crossing my arms over my chest, choosing to play this differently. “When everyone else lowered their heads…” My eyes held hers. “…why didn’t you?”
She didn’t hesitate. “Because if I keep looking at the floor, I’ll eventually forget what it’s like to look people in the eye.”
For the first time in many years, I found myself without an immediate response. Most people answered with fear, duty, or obedience. She answered with dignity, the kind no chain could strip away.
A slow smile returned to my face. “You continue to surprise me.”
Her expression hardened instantly. “Stop smiling… it makes me want to punch you in the gut.”
The confession escaped her before she could stop it, and the smirk that formed on my lips was enough to make her eyes widen. And, against all reason, I laughed.
Serena only looked more irritated. “I fail to see what’s amusing.”
“You keep threatening me.” I said, taking a step toward her. “And it seems to me that you are going to be a handful here.”
“I’m thinking about doing more than threatening.” She said, and I nodded.
“I don’t doubt it.” I said casually. “I find it almost refreshing… at least I get to see a little fire here and there.”
“Well, don’t get too used to it. You never know when it is going to hit you in the face.”
“Oh, I am expecting it to.” I said calmly. “And I will be more than willing to catch and stop it each and every fucking time.”
She glared at me so fiercely I almost expected her to try and slap me again. Instead, she clenched her fists at her sides, every muscle taut with restrained anger.
Everything about Serena was painfully and recklessly honest.
And somehow, that made her far more dangerous than any warrior who had ever stood before me.
“Show yourself out,” I said, turning toward my bar. “And the next time I see you, I will expect you to be wearing the dress I choose.”
I expected her to walk out in silence, at least, to spare herself more trouble… but of course, I was wrong…
“Over my dead fucking body…”
Serena:I still wasn’t entirely sure what had happened. One moment Alexander had been looming over me with a knife in his hand, and the next he had cut my thigh, stained his sheets with my blood, kissed my cheek, and told me good night as if any of it were ordinary. The sequence of events felt impossible, like a dream I could not wake from.I stared at him for a long second before forcing myself off the bed. The cut on my thigh stung, but it was already closing, the small, stubborn part of me that was wolf working beneath the surface despite years of suppression. That fact should have comforted me, but it only made the situation more surreal. Alexander Petrova was insane; there was no other explanation that fit everything I had seen and felt tonight.I moved toward the door, wanting nothing more than to put distance between us and the room that had become a stage for his strange whims. He called my name softly.“Serena.”I stopped and looked back. “What now?”A twitch at the corner of
Alexander:Serena didn’t say a word, and for the first time since she had walked into my room, she had absolutely nothing to say, and I found myself watching her carefully as she stood in front of me.Her eyes were fixed on mine, but the anger that had been burning in them only seconds ago had changed into something else. Shock, disbelief, and perhaps the realization that I had meant every word I had just said.I had chosen her, and I knew that it was something that she didn’t expect… what Helena didn’t realize by sending in the other women is that it was my choice not to want them… but with her, things were going to be different. Her lips parted once as if she wanted to say something, but no words came out. She simply stepped back, putting distance between us, and I allowed her to.My wolf was restless inside me, satisfied in a way that I found irritating.Mate.I ignored him, knowing well that now wasn’t the time for me to be claiming her.Serena finally swallowed before she looked
Serena:His question lingered between us, heavy and impossible to ignore. For a few seconds, I couldn’t find a single word.I had spent years hiding what I was, years learning how to suppress my scent, how to quiet my wolf, and how to pass as nothing more than a human slave. It had kept me alive longer than I ever expected, and I wasn’t about to let one Alpha unravel everything simply because he had a sharper sense of smell than the rest.“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said, keeping my voice steady, watching as he raised an eyebrow. “I’m human.”“Are you?” He asked, smirking as if he could easily read through my lie.“Yes.” He hummed under his breath, and something about the sound irritated me. “You don’t believe me?”“Not even a little.”I clenched my jaw. “Then why bother asking if you already made up your mind?”“Because I wanted to see whether you would lie.” He said, shrugging.“I’m not lying.” His lips curved into a smirk, and I hated how easily he did that. “I was
Alexander:I knew Serena was approaching before the knock even sounded. Her scent reached me first, faint and muted, as though whatever had been used to suppress her wolf still clung stubbornly to her skin. Even so, it was unmistakable. I had spent enough years around wolves to know the difference between a human and one of our kind, no matter how weak their scent had become. My wolf recognized something else entirely. The moment her scent slipped beneath the door, he stirred with sudden alertness, a reaction that irritated me more than I cared to admit.A knock finally came.“Come in.” I called casually, not bothering to get up from the desk.Helena entered first, and Serena followed behind her. My attention shifted immediately. She had changed since her training earlier that day. Her brown hair fell loosely over her shoulders, and although someone had clearly tried to tame it, several strands had already escaped and framed her face. She wore a simple dark dress, nothing extravagant,
Serena:I woke up to someone deliberately knocking into the side of my bed.My eyes snapped open, and I frowned when I saw that a woman stood beside me, already dressed for the morning. Her long black hair was braided neatly down her back, and she carried a basin of water between both hands.I stared after her. “Good morning to you too. You could have had the decency to at least apologize.”She stopped and several women around the room glanced toward us. The brunette slowly turned. “Did you say something?”“You heard me.” I said coldly. “You don’t need to act like you’re deaf.”Her mouth tightened. “I was wondering whether the Alpha’s favorite would wake before midday. It seems to me that you had your own special treatment to the point where you don’t give two fucks about anything else.”There it was. Two days in the Petrova Estate and apparently I already had a title and I sat up. “If I were his favorite, do you really think I’d still be sleeping in here with you?”A few women snicke
Alexander:A knock sounded against my chamber doors long after the manor had gone quiet. Most of the pack was asleep, and even the guards had settled into their night rotations. I looked up from the reports scattered across my desk.“Come in,” I said, already catching Helena’s scent. The doors opened, and she inside. She bowed respectfully, though her posture carried a tension she rarely allowed others to see. “Alpha.”I set the paper aside. “What is it? I trust that there should an issue if you chose to come at this hour of the night?”“There is something I wished to address.” I leaned back in my chair, already sensing the careful way she chose her words. Helena only spoke like this when she expected me to disagree. “I am aware that nothing physical transpired between you and Serena today.”The corner of my mouth twitched. News traveled quickly in Petrova estate. “I wasn’t aware my private meetings were now a topic of discussion.”“They are not.” She said, looking down at her feet. “
