Chapter Four

Right there in front of me, I watched helplessly as those innocent infants died miserably.

I got so infatuated, I needed to know where I failed in my hypothesis. I ran an autopsy on one of the infants and that was when I figured out that the stem cells I had inoculated into their body system clashed with their leukocytes thereby causing severe organ failure.

" Doctor Ronald, what do we do now? There is no way I am gonna go through these nightmares over again. You need to shut this experiment down by any means." My assistant implored me, but how do I tell him that everything going on was out of my control, if I had the power to do something I could have done that a while ago. It's been weeks since we were brought to the Military research facility and I hadn't been allowed to go home and see my family, and neither have I heard from them.

The only solution left is to make this work, by hook or crook.

I studied the stem cells appropriately for some days and created a hypothesis on how to administer them in a different safer way this time.

Once I presented my theory to the commander, five more infants were brought to my lab for me to carry out my newfound hypothesis on them.

With determination and faith, I began the experiment, but this time instead of injecting them directly into the blood vessels, I tried diluting them with a hundred MLS of 15% dextrose in H2O, that way it could reduce the reaction of the stem cells and give the body system some time to adapt to new cells.

I was finally feeling proud of myself and believing that this time nothing will go wrong. It's been three days and going, and the infants were showing good results and I couldn't be happier. I had the military commander in my lab applauding my excellent work, but that was the least of my worries, as I know that my days of working with them were about to come to its conclusion.

On the fifth day, the situation of things changed drastically. It's started with some changes with their skin and suddenly a high fever leading to seizures, my assistant and I worked so hard but nothing could be done, one by one they all died except for one, he was the first baby to react to the infusion, and just like every other child, I had given up hope on his survival.

I was ready to face the consequences, even if it meant taking my own life just to get out of the hell I was in. Without anyone's knowledge, I took my things and was about to leave when I heard the commander call out my name. I had a brief sigh, inferring that I was ready for anything they want to do to me, but when I turned around and saw my wife and my two daughters tied up and standing in front of me, I froze.

" Ronald! Daddy!" My two lovely daughters and my wife called out to me. I couldn't help the warm tears that ran down my cheeks on seeing the condition they were in.

" Please, let them go. I dropped my box of equipment on the floor. I signed the contract, you can take me but please just let my family go." I pleaded with the commander.

" Come on doc, you are making me look like the bad guy here. All I want is for you to go back in there and do what you were fucking paid for! He yelled. Is that too much to ask?" He scoffed while shoving his two hands into his pants pockets.

" I'm sorry sir but I can't continue killing innocent children all in the name of experiments. Heaven knows that I tried my best, I did everything possible but it didn't work. So please let my family go. It is over."

" It is not over until I say so. Kill them all. He signaled his men, and they shot at my wife first, then my twelve-year-old daughter. right in front of my eyes as I pleaded for humanity, Before they could kill my last daughter, he raised his fist, a signal for them to seize fire.

" No! Please that's enough! " I cried as I fell to the floor in their pool of blood. I did this, I killed my wife and daughter because of my greed. I could have stayed the way I was, at least I was happy with what I earned but no, I wanted bigger and a better life.

" I'm giving you another chance Doctor Ronald. If you go against me one last time, you will not live to regret it."

" What sort of Government treats its denizens like this, commander?" I asked as I stood up from the ground and gradually walked towards him.

" My Government, doctor Ronald. I know what you must be thinking, is the US authority aware of this experiment going on? Well, the answer is no. This is all my doing, the US government was too idiotic to take up the offer, so I did. I couldn't resist the idea of creating a genetically modified hybrid from the two most rare and unique creatures, Vampires and werewolves. Isn't that mind-blowing?" He furrowed his eyebrows, and gazed at me, before lighting a stick of cigarette, took a whiff then leaned and puffed it on my face.

" You are insane!" You're a sick man!" I yelled as he chuckled maniacally and walked away taking my daughter into his confinement.

With my heart shattered into a million pieces, I went back to the lab. Frederick saw the state I was in and quickly brought me a towel and a glass of water. He took care of me that night as I mourned the death of my beloved wife and daughter.

The next morning, Fredrick woke me up with a shocking yet, amazing report. I quickly ran to the lab, and to my greatest astonishment, one of the babies survived.

" How did this happen?" I asked Fredrick while I checked the baby's Vital signs which appeared to be normal.

" I don't know I just followed the instructions you gave me, and here we are, eventually." He explained in a cheerful expression.

At once, I ran a few tests on the baby and it turned out his Leukocytes of the baby adapted impressively with the stem cells, even though there were a few hiccups with the process but eventually we had arrived at a good outcome.

I gave it a few more days of thorough analysis to be certain that nothing will ever go wrong.

Until I was certain, I introduced our miracle baby to the Commander.

" Good job doc. I knew you could do it, you only need a little nudge from my side. Great job."

" Thank you, sir, Urm sir, I was hoping since I'm done with the experiment, perhaps it's time I resign and take my daughter home with me."

He glared at me for a moment. " I guess you are right, doc. However, I can't let you leave without running another test on another child, let's be certain that your theory works."

" Of course sir, but you must be forgetting that we lost all the infants during the experiment except for the one survivor."
