Twyla Nightveil’s POV

My head snapped toward him. “No.”

“I wasn’t asking you to marry me.”

“I know exactly what you meant.”

His jaw tightened. A muscle jumped near his temple, but he kept his voice controlled. “Then stop making this difficult.”

“Your penthouse isn’t an option.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s yours.”

He stared at me as though that were the stupidest answer he’d ever heard. His brows drew together, disbelief flashing across his face. “The roads are closed. Your apartment is inaccessible. The hotel is closed.” He stepped closer. “You have nowhere else to go.”

I swallowed. “I can stay here.”

“Of course not. I’m not leaving you alone in an empty building.”

“I’ve survived four years without you.”

His expression changed, the faintest flicker of something wounded crossing his eyes before it disappeared. “I know.”

The two words came out quieter than I expected. I looked away. “Just let me wait until the rain stops.”

“It won’t stop anytime soon.”

I didn’t answer, and he walked toward the door. His footsteps echoed through the nearly empty office before he stopped with his hand on the door handle. “Come on.”

I stayed where I was. “Cody.”

He stopped. He glanced back over his shoulder, his expression unreadable. “You’re not going to touch me.”

His eyes met mine. “I didn’t say I was.”

“You’re not going to force me to do anything.”

His expression hardened. “I don’t need to force you.”

My heart skipped, and heat crept up my neck at the implication. He seemed to realize how that sounded because his jaw tightened, then his voice became calmer. “You’ll have the guest room. I’ll stay in my room. You can leave the moment the roads open.”

I stared at him and he waited. He didn’t move closer. He didn’t try to argue. He simply stood there, waiting for me to make the decision myself. No pressure, no argument, just that unbearable confidence that somehow made refusing him feel harder. I looked toward the windows where the rain continued to pour, the city beyond the glass blurred by sheets of water. I thought about my parents, about Xerius, about the closed road, then looked back at Cody.

“One night.”

His eyes darkened. “One night.”

I picked up my bag and followed him out. The moment I stepped into the hallway, the weight of what I had just agreed to settled heavily in my chest. I told myself it was only because the roads were closed, only because I had nowhere else to go, only because Xerius was safe. But the moment the elevator doors closed and Cody stepped beside me, his shoulder brushing mine, I knew I was lying to myself about one thing.

“Should I prepare myself to see anyone there?”

Cody turned his head slowly toward me. For a moment, he said nothing. Then one corner of his mouth lifted. “Anyone?”

I finally looked at him. “You know what I mean.”

His eyes held mine, amused and far too perceptive. “Are you worried about someone?”

“No.” I looked away again. “I just want to know what to expect.”

A quiet breath of laughter left him. “There’s no one.”

The answer should have relieved me. Instead, something inside me tightened. I hated that a part of me had needed to ask.

“Just me,” he added, his voice lower this time. “And you, for one night.”

My fingers curled tighter around the strap of my bag.

One night.

That was all this was supposed to be. I wasn’t afraid of being alone with him. I was afraid of what might happen if I wasn’t strong enough to resist him.

So why did it suddenly feel like I had just stepped back into the life I had spent four years trying to escape?

Twyla Nightveil’s POV “Can I sleep at Grandma’s tonight?” I looked up from the medicine I was sorting, my fingers stopping over the small bottles on the kitchen counter. Xerius stood in front of me in his pajamas, his little hands clasped behind his back, his bluish-green eyes looking hopeful. “Tonight?” I asked, and he nodded eagerly, his messy hair bouncing. “Pwease, Mama? Grandma said I can stay. Grandpa said we can play with his little cars.” He beamed, dimples showing, and my heart squeezed. Despite everything weighing on my mind, I couldn’t help smiling. “You really want to sleep there?” “Yes.” He nodded again, then added in a smaller voice, “Just one night.” I crouched in front of him and brushed his soft hair away from his forehead. “Okay. One night.” His entire face lit up with excitement. “Really?” “Really.” He threw his little arms around my neck, squeezing tight. “Thank you, Mama!” I hugged him tightly, closing my eyes for a moment. I should have been th

  • Alpha Was Betrayed by Kisses, Saved in Silence   CHAPTER 5: Why Are You Still Here?

Twyla Nightveil’s POV Saturday night. The Grand Stardust Hotel was busier than usual, the restaurant filled with wealthy guests and business deals being struck over champagne. I put on my practiced smile and pushed through the exhaustion. Every extra shift and every tip meant better medicine for Xerius. I was so grateful they still let me work here even on weekends, they knew about my son’s condition. My manager even found out I’d received a higher offer, but of course I couldn’t tell them from whom. When I approached the table in the far corner, my breath caught. Sitting there, looking devastatingly handsome and utterly out of place among the others, was Cody Valtier. The moment his eyes landed on me, everything in him stilled. The glass in his hand stopped halfway to his lips. His posture shifted, alert, every muscle coiled tight. He stared at me like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing, like the sight of me in this uniform, in this place, serving strangers again, irritat

  • Alpha Was Betrayed by Kisses, Saved in Silence   CHAPTER 4: If Not Seymour, Then Who?

Cody Valtier’s POV I stared at the clock on my desk. Seven ten. She was already gone. Again. Every evening at seven sharp, she walked out those doors like she didn’t have a care in the world. Like she wasn’t tearing my empire apart from the inside out. Like she hadn’t broken me into a million pieces four years ago and left me to bleed. My jaw tightened until it ached. She thought I was blind. She thought I was stupid. That was fine. Let her think it. Let her get comfortable. Let her make the mistake of underestimating me. I picked up my phone and dialed the number I knew by heart. He answered on the second ring. “Sir.” “Report,” I said. No greeting. No niceties. I didn’t pay him to be polite. I paid him to see what I couldn’t. Silence on the other end. Then, “I followed her all week, sir. From the moment she left your building until she went inside her apartment. And…” He paused, like he didn’t want to say it. “There’s nothing. No contact. No meetings. No one goes near her ex

Twyla Nightveil's POV I burst through my door, and Stacey was there, arms crossed, face tight. "You finally here?" she said, stepping back. "Doctor just left. He was stable now, but Twyla, it was bad. He was wheezing so hard his whole little body shook. Doctor said next time don't wait. If his chest tightened like that again, call her immediately. She said his asthma was getting worse. He needed more regular checkups, better medication, maybe a specialist. It wasn't just a cold anymore." My throat closed up as I dropped my bag and rushed to the bedroom after giving my friend a quick goodbye hug. Xerius was propped up with pillows, his cheeks flushed, those bluish-green eyes heavy and tired. When he saw me, he smiled, small and weak. "Mama," he whispered. I sat on the edge of the bed and stroked his hair. "I'm here, baby. I'm right here. How are you feeling?" "Hard to breathe," he said softly. "But the medicine helped. Stacey gave me the strawberry one. It tasted funny." I smil

  • Alpha Was Betrayed by Kisses, Saved in Silence   CHAPTER 2: The Price of Silence

Twyla Nightveil’s POV My shift dragged on after he left. Every time I moved, I felt the ghost of his hands on my waist, the burn of his kiss still stinging my lips like a brand. I kept my head down, finished my tables, and counted the minutes until I could go home to my son. I needed to hold him. I needed to breathe. Then my phone buzzed in my pocket. Stacey. “Twyla,” her voice was tight, urgent. “He’s running a fever. High. And he’s having trouble breathing. It’s that same tight cough again. I’ve already called the doctor. She’s on her way, but you need to come home, now.” My blood turned to ice. Bronchial asthma, the doctor had called it. It was severe and chronic. The kind that flared up without warning, the kind that could steal his breath in minutes if I wasn’t there to watch him, to help him, and to be his safe place. It meant late nights, constant care, medication, and a mother who never slept enough. It meant every extra hour I worked was for him. To pay for his bills, me
