Kane's POV“Kane!” Glenn shakes my shoulder, trying to bring me back to the real world. “Wake up!”Oh Goddess, no, I don’t want to. I want to stay here with Willow, safe in our little bubble, but deep down I know it’s a bad idea. I can see her, even touch her, but I can’t feel her soft skin or her comforting warm body in my arms.“Kane! Wake up, man.”Saying goodbye to her is one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do, but staying in the make-believe world with her won’t benefit either of us. Still, I can’t help being a little annoyed when Glenn shows up and pulls me back. “What is it?” I snap.“Did you fall asleep?”Did I? I don’t think so, but I’m not sure. “I don’t know,” I finally say, “but Dario was keeping a lookout. Willow…connected with me.” I frown, trying to figure out exactly what happened. “Suri found Dario, and our wolves did something…I don’t know. She said we were in a dream.”“Here you go.” Glenn hands me a take-away box with fish and chips. “She did it bef
Kane's POV I’ve never seen a vampire in action. They keep to themselves, and we stay out of their way, so I can't help but watch with interested when Zael walks up to the doorman using zero caution. The doorman is a scrawny, middle-aged man whose eyes nearly bug out of his head when Zael materialise out of nowhere right in front of him. “Here now, where’d you come from an’ all?” he asks. Zael leans over the man, bracing himself against the door. “Good evening,” he says, sounding for all he’s worth like a movie vampire. I half expect him to follow it up with, “I vant to suck your blood.” Instead, Zael gives the human an ingratiating smile. “Will you please open this door for us, and invite me in?” Ah right, I forgot about that stupid rule. Vampires can’t enter a human home without a resident inviting them in. Weird rule that never made any sense to me. The human’s eyes glaze over, and without a word, he unlocks the door and swings it inward. “Will you please come in?” Zael nods. “T
“Willow,” someone says and gently touches my shoulder. “Wake up.” For a moment, I’m sure it’s Kane. For a split second, I forget that I’m locked up Goddess only knows where, that I’m all alone with my wolf suppressed and my magic cut off. I moan softly and push my face into the pillow. The smell of it reminds me that I’m not home. “What?” I ask, my voice muffled. “It’s time.” I lift my head and look at Lester. He’s blurry, and I can’t quite focus on him. I rub my eyes and try again, but he’s like a mirage, shimmering in the room. “What's wrong with you? What magic are you using?” “Nothing. We slipped a little something into your food…just to keep you compliant. It won’t harm you.” Stupid. I’m so stupid. I should have known they’d do something like that sooner or later. I’d get angry, but I can’t. “Baby?” “He’s fine. It won’t affect your milk. I made sure. Come on, honey, up you get--” he slips his hands under me and pulls me into a sitting position --“the drugs make it hard, I kn
Innocent launches into a spiritual sermon I’m sure he’s given many times over the years. He doesn’t stutter or take a pause, just keeps droning on about God and Satan or something. I barely pay attention to him, preferring to roll the fabric of the heavy nightdress around my index finger while I try to figure out how much of my magic I can use, and if the knick in the collar is enough to allow me a proper connection with Kane. “Miss Jones,” the Pope asks. “Are you hearing a word I’m saying?” “Huh? What?” I look up, genuinely confused. “How much did you give her?” Innocent asks Lester. “Everyone reacts differently, your excellency. She should be able to answer questions.” The Pope sighs and runs long fingers through his hair. “This child of yours…is he special in any way?” My stomach clenches painfully and my legs go numb with fear. As soon as they know he’s The Ultima, they’ll kill him. “He’s a baby.” “Yes, but werewolf mothers can usually sense if their child has any special abi
Kane's POV Something’s not right here, and I should have known sooner. Everything's wrong. We should hear some humans, meet greater resistence than a few mindless zombies. So far, it's almost been too easy. “Kane,” Zael says. “What are you waiting for? Call in your wolves.” “No.” I turn to Zael. “I’ll be sending them to their deaths.” “Well, they’re all we have, unless--” I shake my head and hold up my hand. “Listen,” I say aloud before I mind link with Glenn. “Can you hear anything? It’s very quiet for a human residence. Too quiet.” “They must be using some kind of magic though, right?” Glenn asks in return. “But Zael could hear them earlier. When we were outside.” “Shit,” Zael mutters. “We are idiots.” “No. We’re just desperate.” Glenn frowns at me, just like Alhora frowns at Zael. “It’s a trap,” I go on in my chancellor's head. "They have us right where they want us. We need to leave. Right now." “Quietly,” Zael says so softly that no human would ever hear him. We slip out
Kane's POV “Fucking nymphs, man,” Glenn screams as we walk into my hotel room. “What’s wrong with them?” I put my finger in front of my lips. “Do you know you’re screaming?” I ask in his head. “No, my fucking ears are still ringing.” He is pissed and ready to start tearing off limbs. I’ve wondered what it would take for him to finally lose his temper. Apparently, an apathetic nymph watching us walk to our deaths was the last straw. He’s been ranting and raving ever since we snuck away. I called in Willow’s guards and ordered them to get a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow, we’re invading The Templar church, and it’s going to be an impossible battle, but I have no idea what else we can do. I open a bottle of whiskey and pour two glasses, handing one to Glenn. We down the whiskey where we stand. “Go get some sleep,” I say, and take the empty glass from Glenn. “You too.” “I’ll try.” I lock the door behind Glenn before I go to the bathroom. I am covered in blood and soot and Goddess kn
For the longest time after I broke my connection with Kane, I lie awake thinking about him. It was faint, and I could barely make out what he said, but it was good to hear his voice, and it gave me a little hope, reminded me that I’m not alone. I don’t know how long Tully was gone, but by the time they brought her back, I’ve had to nurse Adare twice, so at least four hours. She curled up in her bed and refused to talk to me. It wasn’t until they switched on the lights that I saw the damage they’d done to her body. She was covered in blood from the many blows she took to her face, and the back of her dress was torn away so they could get at her with a whip. After I put Adare down for his nap, I took her into the bathroom to clean her wounds. “You won’t heal,” I said while I helped her to undress. “Why did they beat you?” “They wanted information.” “What information?” “They wanted to know if we’re getting ready for war, how many warriors we have, where all our packs live, even the n
“Lower your weapons,” Innocent says as he strolls into the room, his hands behind his back. He’s an imposing figure and has a quiet authority that I’d find attractive if I weren’t so terrified of the man. I had revealed myself, shown that I can break through their defences, and that’s not a good thing. The Templars lower their weapons and place their right fists over their hearts, but they never take their eyes off me. The Pope clears his throat and drops his gaze to my naked chest. I’m suddenly very aware of the fact that I’m nude and surrounded by chaste men who haven’t seen a naked girl in only the Goddess knows how long.Blushing I gather the tatters of my shirt together and clutch the fabric tightly in my trembling fists. “I’m sorry, your excellency,” I mutter and glance at Tully who hasn’t moved since Lester shot Zavier.“You--” The Pope turns to Tully and snaps his fingers --“get the baby.”My friend finally unglues herself and lifts Adare out of his cot. She automatically star
