Long after Kendrick was gone, Rina sat near the window, watching the leaves blow gently in the wind. A peaceful silence sat in the air, though her heart felt far from calm.

“Do you like the tea, miss?” Gilly asked with a bright smile.

Rina looked down at the cup she held. “Yes. Thank you, Gilly.”

Gilly stood by the corner of the room, folding some of the new dresses. Her hands were fast and gentle.

“You know,” Gilly began, “I’ve never seen this room look so beautiful. Before now, it was cold and dull. But now it looks like a real room for a proper lady.”

Rina smiled a little. “It feels strange.”

“Strange?”

“Yes,” Rina said. “I’ve never been treated this well before.”

Gilly stopped folding and looked at her. “You deserve it. Everyone deserves some kindness.”

Rina looked away. “Not everyone thinks so.”
