Dante’s POV

“Annette,” I said as I stepped into the study, a small package in my hand.

She paused at the sound of my voice. “Yes, Alpha?” Her tone was polite, clipped. Guarded.

“There’s a parcel for you,” I said simply.

She stilled for a second, then walked over to me. Her eyes narrowed the moment they landed on the sender’s name. Her entire face changed, shifting from distant calm to something raw and bitter beneath the surface.

“Can you throw it away?” she asked, voice brittle.

“Still unwilling to open it?” I asked gently.

Her bitter smile was quiet but laced with pain. “Alpha, I have told you before. Every month, I say the same thing. Discard it. Burn it. Bury it. I never want to open it. But you always keep it. Why?”

“Because I believe one day, you might want to know what’s inside,” I replied. “Maybe someday, you’ll think there’s something worth salvaging. Something worth fighting for.”

She looked away, blinking fast.

“Why must you lose the battle, Annette?” I asked softly.
