Chapter 3

Fate's POV

The rich timbre of his deep voice sent shivers down my spine. But I was put on my guard by his disgusted tone.

“Yes, Alpha?” I replied with my head even more bowed.

At this rate, I would be kissing his feet if I bowed any further.

“Who are you?” He asked arrogantly.

I quickly thanked the Goddess that Briella had said my name earlier. Otherwise, I would have been in a pot of trouble.

“My name is Fate, Alpha,” I said quietly, wishing he would move on already.

“Raise your head when I’m speaking to you, wolf!” He growled suddenly.

My body quaked in fear at the thought of him knowing I was not a pack member and that he would hurt me just like my father did.

I slowly raised my head to look at the ugly demon before me, and my jaw dropped in shock.

Holy smokes!

This Alpha is the most handsome man I have ever seen! Or he would be if he wasn’t glaring at me with so much contempt.

His shoulder-length, tousled, raven-black hair framed a rugged, handsome face with a strong jawline that begged to be licked. But it was his eyes that held my attention. They were a deep, piercing blue that seemed to look deep into my soul, determined to unveil all of my secrets.

Something flashed across his face as our gazes collided, and I felt a reply deep within my core.

I tore my eyes away from him with a gasp, stunned by the depth of my reaction to this man.

“Why can’t I smell you?” He queried in a weird, curious tone.

“I don’t have my wolf yet, Alpha,” I answered in a shaky voice, still trying to get myself together.

“So, you are weak!” He spat, disgusted.

“I -”

“Save it!” He cut in sharply.

“I will have her.”

Someone gasped among the maids, probably Briella.

“Send her to my office,” he said authoritatively, turning to Mrs Briggs.

“Yes, Alpha,” Mrs Briggs replied with a short nod.

His eyes slightly flared as he looked at me for a moment before striding out of the courtyard, leaving me a shuddering, confused mess.

Why? Why would he pick a weak wolf to be his maid?

“Why did he pick you?!” Briella yelled angrily, echoing my thoughts.

“What did you do to him, you witch?!”

I just stared at her mutely because I had no reply for her.

Mrs Briggs stomped her walking stick on the ground twice to get our attention.

“Girls, keep quiet!” Her strong voice called out forcefully.

Everyone quietened to listen to her.

“You have heard the Alpha. I don’t want to hear pip from any of you,” she said, her sharp gaze resting on Briella.

“The rest of you will go back to your duties as always.”

“Fate, come with me.”

I hurried to her side, ignoring Briella's hot gaze promising retribution. I waved at Ava, who was grinning madly and bouncing on her toes in excitement.

I followed Mrs Briggs out of the courtyard as she slowly hobbled along a long corridor.

She didn't speak to me and I was glad. I needed a plan to leave this pack as soon as possible.

Suddenly, I started as she broke the silence after 10 minutes.

"I hope you're happy now?"

"W-what do you mean?" I replied, frowning in bewilderment.

"What do I mean?" She repeated sharply.

"You think I don't know how much you wanted to be his maid?"

"Now you want to act innocent?"

"Perhaps, Briella was right after all!" She declared, giving me a side glance out of shrewd eyes.

"N-no!"

"It would be the greatest honour to serve as the Alpha's personal maid," I said immediately, reassuring her while wondering why the Moon Goddess hated me so much.

She gave an unconvinced "hmm" but thankfully, didn't say anything else after that.

Too soon, we arrived before a huge brown oak door and Mrs Briggs knocked softly.

"Come in!" The Alpha's voice called out.

My throat choked up in fear at the thought of seeing him again.

If only I could avoid him forever! At least until I escaped from this pack.

I noticed Mrs Briggs staring at me expectantly as she stood beside the door frame.

I wiped my sweaty palms on my gown as I realised she wasn't going to accompany me into the room.

"Be calm, girl. Our Alpha is not a cruel man." She said kindly, trying to reassure me.

I nodded, not believing a single word. It was easy for her to say that when she wasn't going to serve as his maid.

"Are you coming in or what?" He growled out in an annoyed tone.

I pushed the door open with shaky hands, praying I would survive this encounter unscathed.

I stepped into the room with my eyes closed and quickly turned around to close the door.

But, I was unprepared for the sight before my eyes when I faced the room.

The first thing I saw was the back of a red-haired head bobbing up and down behind a large, sleek wooden desk.

The Alpha uttered a low groan and placed his large hand on the red hair. His shirt was unbuttoned and his eyes were closed with his head thrown back in wanton ecstasy.

My eyes shot wide open and I blushed deeply as I realised what was going on behind that desk.

Suddenly, the Alpha's eyes shot open and latched onto mine. His smouldering gaze caused my tummy to jump even as disgust slid through me.

"A- Alpha?" I stuttered. Embarrassed to have been caught gaping, I looked everywhere else except the intense display before me.

"Fate," he growled without stopping his partner's ministrations.

"Yes, Alpha," I said, bowing slightly and keeping my eyes trained on my shoes.

Another low groan echoed in the room as he reached his completion. Determinedly, I refused to raise my head even though my body grew hot to have witnessed such an intimate moment.

The red-haired person finally stood up and my jaw dropped in shock when it turned out to be Melissa!

"What?!" I whispered before I could stop myself.

"What?" Melissa barked at me, pushing her hair away from her face.

"Haven't you ever seen two people in love?"

I shook my head mutely, still stunned by the turn of events.

What is Melissa doing here?

Didn't the Alpha know the pack she's from?

Why is she pretending not to know me?

Maybe, it's because of my clothes, but whatever the reason, I'm glad she can't recognise me.

I noticed that the Alpha was glaring at Melissa, seemingly displeased by her words. Somehow that made me happy.

Again, I shook my head, reminding myself firmly;

Not my business!

"Leave us, Mel." The Alpha grated through clenched teeth.

"But-" She started to protest.

"Now!" The Alpha growled threateningly.

Melissa huffed and angrily flounced from the room.

He heaved a sigh and rubbed his hand through his thick hair before adjusting himself. Even the simple act of buttoning his shirt seems so sensual. A lock of hair dropped on his forehead and my fingers itched to push it back.

I flushed and clenched my hands into fists to avoid giving in to that ridiculous thought.

He levelled a clear blue gaze at me before saying, "Go and run me a bath in my room."

"Yes, Alpha."

Relieved to have an excuse to leave his presence, I bowed and hurried to the door before I would give in to my intrusive thoughts.

Although I was disgusted, confused, and a little jealous of the situation I walked in on, I wanted to climb him like a monkey.

Just before making my escape, his deep voice stopped me.

"My name is Xan."

Butterflies jumped and dipped in my tummy at the deeply sensual quality of his voice.

"Yes, Alpha Xan," I said with my back towards him, determined to maintain a respectful distance.

He chuckled lightly at my not-so-subtle refusal to call him by his name. The warm sound echoed in my ears as I hurried out to carry out his order.

******************************

I sighed and stretched, sorely exhausted after carrying several tubs of water into Alpha Xan's bathroom.

While stretching, I noticed a weird stain on my gown and I returned to the bathroom to wash it off.

Standing before the huge wall mirror, I saw my reflection for the first time that day. All air left my lungs as I stood gaping at the mirror.

"Wh- Whose face is this?!" I screeched before letting out a blood-curdling scream and sliding to the tiled floor in a dead faint.
