35. Calm before the Storm

Even during the afternoon, the quarter was doused in semi-darkness, afternoon sun flitting in through torn curtains. When Elias stepped in the threshold he saw that it was in chaotic disarray — every clothing was strewn all about, tapestry ripped into pieces and hanging in tatters, from water jug to candlestands every item was scattered on the floor, the liquids and wax staining the carpeted floor. This scenario was nothing new. This was a common sight after Rosa's passing but Elias' dread increased because it was too quiet. Even a few days ago when he had visited, Merek was almost rampaging inside his chamber. However, he couldn't help but feel bad for the maids and servants who were in charge of giving him food. He had forbidden anyone to enter his private quarters except a few and among them was Elias.
