Derek didn’t hesitate as the moment my body stilled, he dragged himself across the ground toward me, even though his movements were weak and unsteady. Every inch he covered looked like it cost him something, but he didn’t stop.

“Ethan…” his voice cracked.

By the time he reached me, he collapsed against my side, his hands immediately tangling into my fur.

“I warned you…” he whispered, his face pressing into my neck as his shoulders shook. “I told you there were traps… and you didn't listen…”
