Rhiannon's POV

The attack came at dawn.

I was checking perimeter wards when the howls started—dozens of them, echoing through the forest like a chorus of death. Not the coordinated strikes we'd been tracking. This was different.

This was war.

"Everyone up!" I sprinted back toward camp, my voice cutting through the early morning quiet. "Full assault on the eastern border! Silver Claws, formation three!"

My team moved with practiced efficiency, grabbing weapons and armor.

But my first thought was

  • Alpha's Regret: The Forsaken Luna   CHAPTER 124: THE PACK IN WINTER

Darius's POVWinter arrived the way it arrived in mountain territories — overnight, definitively, without the gradual negotiation of lower elevations. One morning the yard was autumn. The next it was white.Soren's response to first snow was immediate and comprehensive: he was outside before anyone had finished breakfast, in wolf pup form for approximately thirty seconds to assess it properly, then back to human form and back outside to assess it with his hands, a more thorough methodology. He brought samples inside. Showed them to Caelum, who confirmed that snow had existed for the entirety of his four-century awareness. This appeared to be the correct answer. The pack moved into winter in the way packs in established territories moved into winter — with the competence of people who had done it before and the particular warmth of a community that was, this year, doing it with something resolved that hadn't been resolved in a long time. The fracture was not gone. I want to be honest a

  • Alpha's Regret: The Forsaken Luna   CHAPTER 123: MALACHAR AND ISOLDE

Rhiannon's POVHe came back twice more before the end of the six months. The first time was with Caelum, two weeks after the wedding, to finalise the stasis arrangements with the Council's representative — an ancient creature that arrived and departed within a single night and communicated in a register so far above ordinary conversation that Nyx translated for the rest of us in real-time.The second time Malachar came alone. He appeared at the packhouse gate on a Thursday evening with the manner of someone who has decided to do something and has not entirely worked out what it is yet. The gate guard, who was now used to him, let him through without drama.I found him in the entrance hall.He was looking at the wall. We'd put things on the wall since the wedding — not trophies, not battle honours. Just things. A drawing Soren had made of the family with everyone in it: me, Darius, Soren, Marcus, Sera, Nyx, Caelum, a shape that was probably the baby indicated by an arrow and the word s

  • Alpha's Regret: The Forsaken Luna   CHAPTER 122: WHAT NYX KNOWS

Rhiannon's POVShe came to find me the morning after we returned. Not the council chamber — my room, which was Nyx's shorthand for this matters and I want you sitting down. I sat on the window seat and she sat in the chair and the morning light came through the glass and I thought: whatever this is, it isn't bad news. Her face was the face she wore when something was complicated, not when something was wrong."Tell me," I said."How familiar are you with the Primordial Council?""What Caelum told me. What your history lessons covered." I thought back. "Ancient. Pre-Purge. The governing body of Chimera bloodlines before Varic." I paused. "You said they made contact, during the planning for the ritual. That the seals were weakening.""Yes." She looked at her hands. "I didn't tell you everything at the time because you had a ritual to focus on and I didn't want to add to the weight." She looked up. "I'm telling you now because you need to know.""Tell me.""The seals that hold the world'

  • Alpha's Regret: The Forsaken Luna   CHAPTER 121: ONE WEEK AWAY

Rhiannon's POVThe safe house was three hours north of Crescent Moon, in a stretch of forest so old the trees had stopped counting.Darius had found it years ago — or rather, his father had built it and he'd inherited it and never used it for anything, which meant it sat quiet and maintained and exactly right for seven days of being somewhere the packhouse wasn't.We left the morning after the wedding, which meant Soren spent the previous evening making a list of things he needed us to know before we left. The list was long and covered topics including but not limited to: the correct amount of time Marcus was allowed to let him stay up, the location of his backup wooden sword in case of emergency, and his considered opinion on the matter of honey cakes versus other options as a primary breakfast food group.Sera had produced a counter-list, which she called the actual schedule, and presented it to Soren as a fait accompli. He read it with the expression of someone reviewing terms he h

  • Alpha's Regret: The Forsaken Luna   CHAPTER 120: AFTER THE MEADOW

Darius's POVCade's speech destroyed the hall. He'd said, when I asked him, that he was going to keep it short. He had kept it exactly as long as it needed to be, which was not short, and the distinction had mattered. He'd talked about the night he'd found me in the war room five years ago, staring at a photograph I'd locked in a drawer. About the scouts I'd sent into the Forbidden Zone and the reports that came back empty. About the years I'd functioned — led the pack, managed the council, maintained the border — while being, underneath all of it, a man standing in front of a locked door not knowing if he'd ever find the key. Then he'd talked about the Phantom walking into the war room masked.About watching me try to place something I couldn't name, something in the way she moved and spoke and looked at the maps, something that kept brushing against a grief I'd carried so long I'd stopped seeing it.He talked about the mask falling.About the look on my face when I understood who sh

  • Alpha's Regret: The Forsaken Luna   CHAPTER 119: VOWS

Rhiannon's POVThe morning of the wedding, Soren would not stand still. He'd been in the formal outfit since approximately dawn — the dark jacket and trousers Sera had selected, which he'd agreed to wear and was now wearing with the slightly rigid posture of someone operating in unfamiliar constraints. He stood in my doorway while Nyx pinned the final adjustment to the dress and delivered a running assessment of the preparations downstairs."The food smells good. Cade dropped something and said a word I'm not supposed to say. The stone circle meadow has flowers now, someone put flowers everywhere. Caelum is standing near the entrance looking like he doesn't know what to do at a celebration.""What is he doing?" I asked."Standing," Soren said. "Very correctly.""That's normal.""Marcus told him to hold a drink and look like he was enjoying himself and Caelum said he didn't drink and Marcus said that wasn't the point and they had a whole conversation about it."Nyx finished the pin. I
