Chapter 6

The words hit their target with accuracy as I smelled the shame and anger that was doused in this room.

Elena's face went white from rage or something else entirely, and she launched herself at me with a snarl of rage, her hand raised to strike at me. She thought that she was fighting a mere human.

But I was ready for her.

I caught her wrist mid-swing, my grip was iron tight as I held her arm suspended in the air, not letting it move.

For a moment, we were frozen in time, neither of us doing anything else but simply existing.

Her face was twisted with fury, mine was calm and blank as usual, showing no expression on my face. She wanted to pull out of the tight grip that I had on her but I held on tight.

Then I slapped her.

The sound was loud enough that it echoed throughout the kitchen like a gunshot, and Elena fell to the floor immediately with a cry of shock and pain.

The slap had been delivered with the right amount of force. It was hard enough to send a message that I w

Chapter 36MIRANDABut I couldn't be that person. I'd been raised in a family that punished emotional displays, that valued calculation over passion, that taught me from childhood that love was a weakness to be exploited rather than a strength to be celebrated. My mother had spent my entire life drilling into me that the only value I had was in the strategic alliances I could create, the connections I could forge, the benefits I could bring to the family.Love had never been part of that equation. So I'd approached my engagement to Kieran the same way I approached everything else—as a project to be managed, a goal to be achieved, a business deal to be negotiated. I'd focused on being the perfect Luna-in-training, on learning everything I could about pack politics and territorial management, on presenting the image of a capable, sophisticated partner. What I hadn't focused on was actually connecting with him. Actually trying to build something real beneath all the political convenience

Chapter 35MIRANDAThe leather seats of my private car felt like a sanctuary as I slid inside, the door closing behind me with that satisfying thunk that meant I was finally, blissfully alone. Well, alone except for Mike, but he didn't count. Mike had been my personal driver for three years now, and he understood the most important rule of working for me: discretion above all else."Miss Ashworth," he greeted warmly, his kind eyes meeting mine in the rearview mirror. "Where to?"I pulled out my tablet from my bag—not the one I used for family business or social media, but the second one, the secret one that nobody in my life here knew existed. The one that contained all my UK contacts, my real business ventures, the life I was building far away from my family's suffocating expectations and Kieran's painful indifference."Just drive for now," I said, powering on the tablet and watching it come to life. "I need a moment to think."Mike nodded and pulled away from the building smoothly,

"Who's finally ready to claim what's rightfully hers.""To crushing our enemies under our feet," I added, raising my own glass. "Starting with Marcus Sullivan and his pathetic mistress.""Speaking of which," my mother said, her eyes taking on a calculating gleam, "we should probably deal with the Marcus situation before the fundraiser. We don't want any complications from that quarter overshadowing your reentry into society.""What did you have in mind?" I asked, curious about what my mother—a former assassin with a frighteningly creative mind—might be planning."Nothing fatal," she said with a small smile. "At least, not physically. But Marcus Sullivan committed several serious crimes when he drugged you with silver and attempted a forced marking. Those crimes have consequences in our world, especially when the victim is the daugh

Chapter 33SERAPHINALucas stopped pacing and came to stand in front of me, his hands on my shoulders."Then what's the plan?" he asked. "Because if you're going to do this, we need to be smart about it. Strategic. Miranda Ashworth has spent years positioning herself as the perfect Luna, and she's not going to give up her prize without a fight.""I know," I said, feeling a smile curve my lips—the kind of smile that had once made grown Alphas nervous when I was planning something particularly devious. "That's why I'm not going after Kieran directly. Not yet, anyway."My father moved closer, interest sparking in his eyes."What are you thinking?""I'm thinking that I've been out of society for five years," I said, my mind already racing through possibilities. "I've been playing the role of a submissive human wife in some backwater town, letting everyone forget that I'm Seraphina Blackwood, daughter of Vincent and Isabella, trained from birth to navigate the most cutthroat social circles

Chapter 32SERAPHINAThe drive back to the Blackwood compound felt like the longest journey of my life, even though it couldn't have been more than twenty minutes. I kept replaying the conversation with Kieran over and over in my mind, dissecting every word, every facial expression, every painful moment of rejection.*"We're done, Seraphina. What we had, what we could have been—that ended five years ago."*His words echoed in my head like a death knell, each repetition driving the knife deeper into my chest. I'd known it wouldn't be easy, had prepared myself for anger or coldness or even indifference. But somehow, the clinical way he'd dismissed me had been worse than any of those scenarios. He'd looked at me like I was a problem to be solved, an inconvenient complication in his otherwise perfectly ordered life. And then Miranda had walked in with her father, and I'd seen exactly what I was up against. She'd been poised, professional, devastatingly beautiful in a way that made me feel

Chapter 31KIERANThe problem was that I couldn't defend myself without lying. Yes, Seraphina had come to thank me. But it was also true that seeing her again had stirred up feelings I'd been trying to bury for five years. It was true that my wolf, despite its anger and determination to move on, had still responded to her presence with an intensity that terrified me.And Miranda, perceptive as she was, had probably seen all of that in the brief moment our eyes had met.I thought about her father's threats, about the political implications of this engagement falling apart. But more than that, I thought about Miranda herself—the brilliant, capable woman who'd spent months preparing to be my Luna, who'd been nothing but supportive and understanding despite knowing she was second choice. She deserved better than this. Better than a mate who couldn't let go of the past, better than a king who was still nursing a five-year-old broken heart.*Then give her better,* my wolf said firmly. *We p
