Manny’s POV

“Alpha, the werewolves at the northern border says they have spotted rogues circling again,” my guard reported.

“They did not attack, but their numbers seem to be growing. Do you want me to double the guard shifts there?”

I nodded slowly, trying to focus, though my mind felt like it was wading through thick mud. “Yes, double the shifts. And tell the warriors to keep an eye on the river crossing too, it’s an easy weak point.”

“Yes, Alpha.” He hesitated, glancing at me carefully. “And… about the prisoner in the dungeon. Should Lady Lexi remain there?”

For a moment, I froze. His words hit me, but they didn’t make sense. The prisoner in the dungeon? Lady Lexi?

My thoughts twisted. I tried to trace back the memory, the moment I had ordered her locked away. I saw flashes, her face angry and desperate, her hand striking across my cheek, shouting something about Clara, but then the memory blurred, melting into haze like smoke slipping through my fingers. I frowned, rubbing the si

Manny’s POVThe drive into Silver Fang territory was awfully quiet, and I preferred it that way. I expected a lot of noise from the occupants, the other pack members of the territory, but I did not see anything. Well good for me.I did care about the car, or the road, or the way the border markers looked in the distance. All I cared about was Lexi.Every second that passed without her was a second wasted, and I knew I could not afford to waste any.I pulled up near the border, cut the engine, and stepped out. I had not expected a welcome party, and yet figures slipped out from the trees like shadows made flesh. They did not even give me the chance to speak. Chains clamped around my wrists before I could even take two steps forward. Cold steel. Unnecessary, but they wanted the humiliation of it.I let them drag me across the compound. My silence was not submission, it was me trying to think. Every step, every glance, I was weighing. I had kept my promise and came alone. That was all th

Lexi’s POVThe guards surged forward without warning. Jax shouted in protest, his voice rising over the shuffle of boots and the harsh scrape of steel against stone.“Don’t you dare touch her!” he roared, jerking against the hands gripping him. His voice cracked with fury, but there were too many of them.I wiggled as hard as I could, fighting against the pull of my own captors, panic spiking through me. “Jax!”Our eyes locked for a brief second. His face was tight with anger, his jaw clenched as he strained against their hold.He was not afraid, he was furious, indignant, unwilling to let them take me. That look and the intention meant a lot to me.Then they took him away. Wolfe and Kiran also left when some short guy came to deliver an information in Wolfe’s ear.“Stop!” I cried out, thrashing against the small chain.“Leave him! I will come quietly, just don’t…”My words were swallowed by the slamming of a heavy wooden door. The sound echoed around me as I was shoved into a smaller

Lexi’s POVThe coolness of steel was felt in my wrists as they shoved us forward, their hands rough, their laughter cruel, one even had the audacity to spit in front of usJax stumbled once beside me, his shoulder colliding with mine, but he didn’t fall. He straightened, his face being all determined and all, his eyes burning with the same frustration I felt.“They could at least pretend we are worth treating with dignity,” he muttered under his breath, he did not intend for anyone to hear it, but the whiff was loud enough that only I caught it.“Don’t give them more to laugh about,” I whispered back.We were herded through the narrow clearing until the forest opened into a courtyard I recognized once from my rogue days, I was not captured, I needed something from someone in the pack and I had to get it, now looking ahead, this was a part of Silver Fang’s territory rarely spoken about, I was brave. Torches lined the stone walls, shadows clawing upward with the flames. And at the far e

Manny’s POVThe buzz of my phone cut through the quiet hum of conversation in the council chamber. I frowned, glancing down. Lexi’s name flashed across the screen. Relief flickered first, she had not come back early last night, and someone said she left at about 5:30am today, I’d been trying not to let the unease gnaw at me.But when I opened the message, relief shattered into ice."If you want to see Lexi and Jax alive again, abandon your army. Come alone to the Silver Fang border by midnight, no tricks. If you fail, they die."I stared at the words, my breath caught halfway in my throat. For a moment, the world dulled around me, voices blurred, the table in front of me seemed too far away, and the steady tap of Elder Cyrus’s cane against the floor thudded like a distant drum.“Alpha?” Cyrus’s voice cut through. “What is it?”I shoved the phone onto the table. The elders leaned forward, their faces tightening as they read. “They’ve got them,” I said, my voice flat. Saying it out lo

Lexi’s POV“Jax, come look at this.” My voice came out lower than I intended, a careful mix of frustration and dread. I had been staring at the files spread across the table for nearly an hour, and the more I connected the dots, the more sickeningly familiar it felt. If this was Kiran, it would have only made sense if he changed his methods, this was old. Jax leaned over my shoulder, close enough that I could feel the heat of his presence, though his focus was firmly on the papers I shoved toward him. “What am I looking at?” he asked, his brow raised as he scanned the neat columns of numbers, shipments, and supposed supply receipts.“See this?” I tapped one sheet with a sharp flick of my finger. “The quantities don’t match. And here…” I slid another page in front of him. “The produce supposedly sold last month? It does not appear in the storage records. It’s gone.”Jax frowned, straightening up. “Could be a clerical error. We have had sloppy bookkeeping before.”I let out a dry la

Lexi’s POV“Good day Madam Lexi, we didn’t think you’d be back so soon.”The young clerk at the front desk looked up from his pile of documents, eyes wide with surprise. He fumbled with the papers in his hands before setting them down neatly, as if afraid I’d notice his nervousness.“I couldn’t stay away any longer,” I said, stepping further into the pack office. “Things don’t stop running just because I’ve been gone. I need to see where we stand.”An older worker, rose from his seat near the record shelves. “You’ll find plenty waiting for you. We kept everything organized, but…” He trailed off, hesitant. “Well, you’ll see.”I gave a small nod, hiding the unease curling inside me.The pack office was not overly large, but it was enormous enough for an office, about three different rooms with rows of desks, owned by different workers. Shelves lined with ledgers, and the long desk at the back that was mine.Every piece of food grown, every trade completed, every coin spent, it all passe
