Manny’s POV

The buzz of my phone cut through the quiet hum of conversation in the council chamber.

I frowned, glancing down. Lexi’s name flashed across the screen. Relief flickered first, she had not come back early last night, and someone said she left at about 5:30am today, I’d been trying not to let the unease gnaw at me.

But when I opened the message, relief shattered into ice.

"If you want to see Lexi and Jax alive again, abandon your army. Come alone to the Silver Fang border by midnight, no tricks. If you fail, they die."

I stared at the words, my breath caught halfway in my throat. For a moment, the world dulled around me, voices blurred, the table in front of me seemed too far away, and the steady tap of Elder Cyrus’s cane against the floor thudded like a distant drum.

“Alpha?” Cyrus’s voice cut through. “What is it?”
