CHAPTER 1

Adriana stared back at herself in the mirror as she applied a thick layer of red lipgloss. She was devastated. She has been devastated ever since she got that phone call from her fiance, Edward.

Edward had told her she didn't seem like one he could build a life with anymore. Maybe he felt that way because she was living in the basement of her married sister's apartment. Or maybe he felt that way because she was a waitress with no actual life goals. Either way, she was heartbroken because he had just proposed to her.

She was getting ready to meet with her wild and ecstatic friend Celine, at the club. She was more than determined to get Edward out of her head. She applied the last layer of lipgloss easily and stood up, picked up her purse, and headed for the door. She took a glance at her cramped room, it was in so much disarray just like her life. She closed the door to her room and headed hastily but quietly for the front door.

"Adriana," Piper called softly while leaning on the doorframe to her room. A frown line on her forehead.

"Where are you headed to? It's past 9pm." She asked.

" Out," Adriana answered quickly, avoiding Piper's gaze. Piper was Adriana's older sister. Piper has always been a good daughter. Went to Smith College and currently working for one of the largest law firms in NYC. She was the perfect daughter. She was uptight, way too uptight for Adriana's liking. She has always been one to steal attention, with her hazel eyes and strawberry blonde hair, which was how she bagged such a loving and handsome husband, Derek. Note the sarcasm. He's probably cheating on Piper.

"Adriana, I'm done giving you advice. You're not determined to make something of your life. I don't care what you do with your life. I just want to make it clear that your half of the rent is due and I am not giving you an advance on this. We made a deal." Piper stated. Adriana scoffed. Here we go again.

" Okay." She replied softly, still not meeting Piper's gaze.

"Will you also like to clean up your room? It looks like a calculated dump. The kids could easily run in there and it's not healthy for them. If you have decided to breathe in hazardous air fine, just don't make my kids do the same." Piper said again, picking herself up from the door frame and heading into her room, shutting the door behind her.

"Hazardous air." Adriana thought out loud and scoffed again. She walked out the front door and shut it behind her. She stood outside. Adriana breathed in slowly and breathed out. She loved the nightlife in New York City. She loves the way everywhere lights up in every color known to man. She loves how all the lights reflect off the high windows of different buildings making the city sparkle more. She loves all the tall buildings in New York and how busy everywhere usually is. She loves New yo-

"Addie! Adriana!" A whiny but firm voice called out forcing Adriana to take notice of her surroundings. Celine had arrived sitting in the driver's seat. Celine was Adriana's best friend. They've been friends ever since Celine shared her eraser with Adriana in kindergarten. Celine was a 5"4, red-haired, carefree woman. She was always taking Adriana out on wild adventures.

" What the fuck Addie? Come on, it's almost midnight. " It’s literally 9pm.

" Well, hello to you too," Adriana replied sarcastically as she got into the seat next to Celine. Celine fastened her seatbelt. She was glad to have a fairly rich best friend who constantly had to move around. That basically meant she had access to a car. Which was a huge luxury considering they lived in Manhattan.

" Seatbelt please," She said without acknowledging Adriana's greetings. Adriana rolled her eyes.

"I can almost feel the adrenaline coming from you Celine. I can also catch a scent of alcohol." Adriana pointed out as she turns to look at Celine with a knowing look.

"Duh! I'm so freaking pumped, Addie. You've been in such a phase after your break up with you know who, automatically dragging me along with you. I haven't partied in what? like 3 months?" She said, casually making hand gestures.

" Hands on the wheel Celine. I'm glad you got what you wanted. And you know you can say, Edward." Adriana replied, laughing. “ Stop being so dramatic.”

" Glad to know his name is no longer a trigger word. " Celine said, smiling towards Adriana.

" See, you're moving on. I promise we'll have so much fun. Trust me." She said reassuringly.

" I doubt that," She has never been one to socialize or party. Edward was her college sweetheart. He was her first everything.

They arrived at the club a few minutes later. Loud music could be heard emanating from the club. Thumping so loud it was almost deafening.

"Come on," Celine said loudly, grabbing Adriana by the wrist as they headed for the entrance to the club. They got in, Celine sighed in ecstasy then turned to face Adriana.

"Okay, Addie. We're here because you're going to fucking get Edward out of your head. You're going to get so drunk that you won't even be able to stand upright and then you get it on with a very hot guy." Celine said ever so seriously, holding Adriana by the wrists, looking her in the eyes. Adriana found it so hilarious, she burst out into a series of loud laughter.

" What the fuck Celine? I'm doing none of that okay?" Adriana said, still laughing. She walked away from Celine, heading for the bar.

" Okay well, if you're not going to do any of that, I will."

" Can I get four shots of tequila please?” Her voice was flirty and laced with drunkenness. The bartender smirked knowingly in response and started to pour her drink. He wishes.

" Four?!" Adriana half asked, half exclaimed, turning to look at Celine." I am not driving Celine." She finished. Celine glanced over at Adriana and gave her 'the' look.

"Remember I'm not a lightweight like you Addie." She pointed out.

The bartender handed her four shots of tequila as requested. Celine chugged them down quickly, one after the other and wiggled her body like she had just been electrified. Adriana laughed at the sight of that, shaking her head in disbelief. Celine adjusted the strap of her purse on her shoulder and turned fully to Adriana.

"Okay, Adriana. See you." Celine said as she waved once towards her and headed for the dance floor.

" What? Celine you brought me here, you're not going to leave me alone. I'm coming with you. " Adriana said, getting down from the bar stool.

" No no no Addie, you're not, you look so beautiful. You'll have men buying you drinks in no time, okay? Plus..” She started and trailed off. Adriana watched her intently, prodding her to continue with her brows arched in anticipation.

“ You’re such a bad dancer babe. Like two left legs type of thing, y’know?” No, I don’t know!

Adriana gasped jokingly. “ That was so mean, Celine.” She added dramatically.

Celine’s face scrunched up in fake pain. “ Sorry, but it’s true.” She said again before coming closer and pecking Adriana on the lips. She headed towards the dance floor again, swaying her hips while whooping. Adriana sighed loudly. She couldn’t believe Celine was leaving her by herself. But then again… it was Celine.

She turned in her seat, facing the bar. She thought back to the first time Edward had brought her to this bar. He had just taken her to have dinner at his parent's the previous night. She was meeting his parents for the first time, it was such a hectic dinner for all involved. They had spent the night there and left the next morning. They were both so stressed they decided to get it all out at the bar by getting drunk. It was fun.

"Fuck Edward and his wrinkled, rude-ass mom," Adriana said out loud, surprising both herself and the bartender.

" Can I get a shot of tequila? " She requested. She said to herself that she was going to have just one shot. One shot would make her forget about Edward for a while. She was a bad lightweight. The bartender handed her a shot of tequila. She sipped and scrunched up her face, she was hardly fond of alcohol, but that familiar burning in the chest, that she could remember.

She chugged the rest of the tequila. She suddenly felt that rush of adrenaline she could feel coming from Celine earlier in the car. She hadn't felt that type of rush in such a long time. Meanwhile it was probably a typical day for Celine. Adriana chuckled at the realization.

" Another one." She requested again. She didn't sip this time, she chugged the shot down in no time. She felt the rush rising.

" Another one." She asked, her words slurring already.

" Are you sure about that? " The bartender asked.

" Can I get another shot of tequila please?" She asked clearer this time, assuming he didn't hear her. He handed her another shot which she chugged down.

She was in a very drunken state. She turned her back to face the bar, and stared at the dance floor, searching for Celine. Adriana hadn't noticed it before, but as she looked around she felt a weird energy from this particular club. The men in the vvip section were all hefty, hairy-looking men. They all looked and were equally dressed corporate too. She wondered where Celine was. She suddenly wanted to leave.

She searched her purse shakily for her phone. She scrolled hastily through her contact list, searching for Celine's contact. She located it and dialed it, but it went straight to voicemail. Adriana tried so many times but it kept going to voicemail. Adriana lost grip of her phone as it fell to the ground.

" Damn it." She cursed loudly. Before Adriana could pick it up, she could see a very veiny hand that looked masculine reaching for her phone. She could tell from the crisp white, button-up, long-sleeved shirt peeking out from his burgundy suit, that he was one of the corporate-looking men she had seen earlier at the private lounge.

Adriana panted as she closed the door to her room and leaned heavily against it. When that didn’t seem to calm her down, she started to pace back and forth before finally settling down on her bed, her mind racing on what to do next. It didn’t seem to dawn on her yet that she had a whole life growing inside her. A life put in her by a potential killer. She recoils at the mere thought. Adriana cautiously looks down at her belly as if the baby would disappear if she moved the wrong way or tilted her body the wrong way. She wraps both arms gently over her stomach like some sort of signal to her eyes, before she starts to cry uncontrollably. What was she going to do? She could not get an abortion. No. Piper and her made a promise to their late mom, when they were younger. It was sort of an inside joke between all three of them, but still, Adriana felt like it was the least she could do to appease her dead mom for turning out the way she did. Keep a joking promise. Run away. That was it.

Adriana suddenly felt claustrophobic, as almost visible beads of sweat started to form around her hairline. She could not let Piper see this. "What?" Addie asked when she saw Piper staring at her with her left brow arched in anticipation." Well go on, open it. I wanna know what it is. You haven't gotten any mail in a while, whatever's in there must be pretty important." Piper said cheerfully, like finding out if you're pregnant or not , when you have no boyfriend or fiance or even a good paying job, was the best thing that could ever happen to anyone."Trust me, it's not important." Adriana said, before heading to her room. She got in and locked the door. She sat on her bed, she was so nervous her palms had become sweaty. She wiped them on her jeans as she wiggled her hands." Come on Adriana, just open it, you took the morning after pill, you cannot be pregnant." She slowly reassured herself out loud. She unwrapped the envelope quickly, before she would change her mind. Now holdi

Adriana was clad in a red and yellow waitress outfit, deep in thought as she stared outside the window from the back of the serving counter. She really didn't have much going on, Piper was right. Adriana clutched her stomach as she suddenly felt nauseous, was it something she ate? It stopped for a minute and came back, she quickly went through the back door, dashing for the toilet. She knudged the toilet door open and went straight for the toilet as she bent over, vomiting her soul out. She kept vomiting, it was like she couldn't stop. She sat on the floor of the staff toilet as she breathed heavily. She had only had a plate of cinnamon toast crunch that morning, and it's barely noon. She stood up, rinsed her mouth and face and straightened her clothes. She was going to ask for the rest of the day off.Adriana arrived home 40 minutes later. She had to beg her boss to let her off for her remaining hours. She had called Celine to inform her of her weird morning sickness, with the inten

They had a one-night stand. They had many one night stands in one night. Adriana tossed in the soft mattress, wrapping herself up more into the silk black, sheets. Original. She flapped her arms on the opposite side of the bed, searching for the chiseled body of her one-night stand. Her palm met with nothing. Adriana rose slowly and looked over to the opposite side. Niklaus had left. Of course, he did. She sighed, palming her forehead, she could feel the thumping of her heart through there. She has a bad headache, probably from all the drinking she did last night. Adriana looked around, slowly searching for her clothes with her eyes. Niklaus t-shirt to be precise. She spotted it a few feet away from the bed. She walked over, she was so sore that it hurt when she bent down. "Ooh ow!" She reached for the T-shirt anyway. She sighed again. Celine. She suddenly remembered. Her phone. She remembered again. She quickly headed towards the door, pulled it open, and turned to take a qui

When they had been driving for almost 30 minutes. Adriana wondered if she should just stay quiet incase she was getting kidnapped or ask where exactly Niklaus lived. She settled for the latter. A short while after she inquired, they arrived at an electric gate. The driver ordered the gate to be opened, and then he drove in. Voice activated, not surprised. Niklaus could see the awe all over her face. The car door opened automatically and Adriana got out. She didn't even know it could do that. It’s a Rolls Royce. Of course it does that. When Niklaus had told her he lived in Westchester County, she didn’t think he meant he lived in a literal mansion. The house had to be about 10,000 square feet. It looked original and old, but elegant and fancy. It looked like something that has been passed down over the years but had also been refurbished over the years. It was a combination of sky blue and spotless white, with subtle hints of gold. It looked so beautiful. Every part of this mansion w

You don't look so good." The voice said, handing Adriana her phone. She grabbed it harshly and shoved it back into her purse. "I'm fine." She replied hastily. She took a glance at him, his outfit to be precise. He looked so uptight and so corporate. She took one more glance at him. Well, his outfit. He was so much taller than her and she was too lazy or too drunk to look up at him. She felt that same weird energy she had felt earlier coming from him, hitting her so hard. She quickly walked away staggering, heading for the entrance to the bar. She headed towards where Celine had parked her car earlier, or where she remembered Celine parking the car because it was no longer there. " What the fuck?" She swore loudly, sucking her teeth harshly. How was she going to get home? She didn't have any money. She assumed Celine would drive her back home the way she picked her up. She thought about calling Celine, so she reached for her phone. Her battery had died. " Great," She said, then si
