Chapter 5 | Punctual

Amelia

By the time I came back outside, Alpha Knight had already sent Veronica away. He breathes out as he sees me walk towards him with my duffle bag. He tells me, “Sorry about that. Veronica is my Beta’s daughter, and she’s always been a bit… wary of newcomers. Anyway, there’s a room you can have inside of the pack house. It has an attached bathroom, but the kitchen and dining room are on the main floor, so you’ll have to deal with that.”

I nod, “Whatever you think is best, Alpha Knight.”

We walk into the pack house, and he shows me my room and walks off. I look at the time and see that it’s now past 9, but with all the events today, I feel exhausted. I fall onto the bed and knock out.

I wake up to the sound of knocking on my door. I get up and see a woman who was probably in her early 40s standing in front of me. Her eyes flicker to my face and she asks, “Are you Amelia?”

I nod, “I am, and you are?”

“Maggie, but call me Mrs. Wilkins when we’re in front of others, okay?”

I smile, “You got it!”

“Come on, Ms. Amelia. I need to show you your duties. The Alpha is a very punctual man, and he has you working for him, so you need to be on time for everything, got it?”

I nod, “Yes, ma’am.”

As we walk towards the kitchen she tells me, “He likes his coffee black, he’s allergic to eggs but likes to have a decent variety in his food each day so make sure to change up his breakfast every day, you need to bring his food to his office by 7:00 a.m. Got it?”

I nod, “Yes ma’am.”

She nods, “Good, I’ll leave you to it. Alpha’s office is on the second floor and the third door on your right. Once you are done, I will meet you back here.”

I nod and give a small smile as she walks away. I look back at the enormous kitchen and take a deep breath as I go on the hunt for the coffee beans.

I went ahead and grabbed everything I would need to make breakfast and started to make the pot of coffee. The only issue was the machine is much fancier than anything I’ve ever seen. It took me a lot longer than I care to admit on how to use it.

Once the coffee was brewing, I made some apple cinnamon oatmeal, bacon, and a side of watermelon. I hoped this was enough variety for him. I set everything down on the plate and then grabbed the biggest coffee mug I could find and filled it up.

After I set everything on the tray, I took a deep breath as I mentally prayed that I wouldn’t drop it. I walked slowly up the stairs and looked for Alpha Knight’s office. As I went up the stairs, I noticed that other pack members saw me and would whisper about me. I wonder how long it will take for them to get used to my presence.

I struggled to balance the tray as I knocked on the office door and waited for him to answer. Once I heard him say come in, I opened the door and smiled softly at him and his Beta as I set the tray down. Alpha Knight didn’t even look up from his paperwork as he stated, “You’re late.”

My body froze as fear flooded through it. I know he is a punctual man, and I didn’t know what would happen with me being late.

The Beta looks at me with a smirk as his eyes went up and down my body. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion by the look he was giving me, but before I could think on it anymore, Alpha Knight said, “Leave us, Beta Kaden.”

Beta Kaden walks out of the room closing the door behind him and I stood perfectly still as Alpha Knight stood up from his desk. His eyes never moved off me as he walked around me slowly, like a predator getting ready to attack its prey.

I force myself not to move as I wait for the punishment. I’m sure he will give me for my tardiness.

Maven

I don’t like the way Kaden was looking at Amelia. I’m not sure why he looked at her like that, but it doesn’t matter. I needed him to get out, anyway. He will expect me to punish her and… I don’t want to. But I need to make sure she knows that this can’t happen regularly.

As I get closer to Amelia, her scent overwhelms my senses. Lavender honey with a hint of orange… my mouth is watering from it.

I stand behind her and watch as the goosebumps rise on her flawless skin. I desperately want to kiss her and mark her as mine, but I refrain. It’s just my primal instincts coming up. My wolf wants this, but I don’t. I don’t want a mate and she hasn’t seemed to recognize that we’re supposed to be together and I’m not going to tell her!

I’m happy to live like this. I know she’s safe and neither of us has to go through the pain of being rejected or the pain of our mate dying after you’ve been marked. I’ve been quiet for way too long. I focus on her as I ask, “What time were you supposed to bring me breakfast?”

She whispers, “7:00.”

I move my face to her ear and my lips brush against her earlobe. I whisper in an icy tone, “I hate an unpunctual person. Consider this your first and last warning. Do not be late again.”

She mutters, “Okay.”

“You should say yes, Alpha, Sir, or Master.” I correct her.

She whispers, “Yes, Alpha.”

The sound of her voice caused a shiver to run through my body. I glance down at her. Why is it that I don’t seem to have an effect on her?

The effect she has on me causes me to adjust my briefs as I walk away and state, “You may go.”

She nods her head as she says, “Yes, Alpha.”

I watch as she rushes out of my office, and she stumbles on her way out. Huh, I guess I have some effect on her. But… why doesn’t she recognize me as her mate?

I shake my head as I get back to my work. It doesn’t matter. We won’t be together.
