Tabitha's POV

I fixed Holly with pleading eyes, hoping that she would agree.

But before she said anything, a voice I knew too well filled the doorway.

"Seriously? You came begging at my house?"

I stood up in disbelief and watched as Daphne and Derek walked in.

Then I whipped around back at Holly.

Holly smiled at Daphne dotingly. Then she told me, "Daphne is Mark's daughter. I was about to introduce her to you just now. You're about the same age, and I'm sure you can be friends."

Talk about a cruel twist of fate. Daphne's father stole my dad's mate.

And now, she stole mine.

Like that was not enough, they saw me in such a sorry state. I was literally a clown in their ritzy life.

Of course, Daphne wouldn't miss such a perfect chance to humiliate me.

She walked over and said to Holly in an ironic tone, "Friends with her? Not gonna happen. She's a thief. You'd better go check if anything is missing."

Hearing Daphne's words, Holly started to scrutinize me.

"What's going on? You're thieving now? Tabitha, how'd you get like this?"

The memories of Holly heartlessly letting go of my hand and leaving with Mark when I was little came flooding back.

I looked at her in disappointment and asked, "You take her word over mine just like that? You didn't even bother to ask me, huh? Are you really my mom?"

"Watch your tone!" Holly glared at me. "Daphne has always been a sweet girl. She never lies. But you've always been lack of parental control. Maybe that's why you picked up some bad habits."

"Parental control? You're making it sound like I didn't want a mom to set me straight. Wasn't it you who walked out on me and Dad?"

Holly blushed with shame. It seemed she didn't want me to bring up her past when Daphne was around.

I looked away in disappointment, sick of the sight of her. Then I caught a glimpse of Derek, who stood there in silence and showed no response.

Daphne noticed what I was doing and glanced at Derek, too.

Then she immediately turned around and complained to Holly, "Can you kick her out? I don't want her in my house."

"Something happened to Tabitha's pack, so I offered to let her stay here for a few days. Well, I'll go tell her otherwise if you don't like it," Holly sounded so affectionate as if Daphne were her real daughter.

Then, Holly looked back and said to me apologetically, "Tabitha, I've been busy planning Daphne's wedding, so I might not have the time for you... Maybe you should..."

I had long stopped craving maternal love from Holly. However, getting ditched again after so many years, I couldn't help feeling heartbreak.

Biting back tears, I replied, "Mrs. Sutton, I never wanted to stay in your house, and I would never be friends with a homewrecker. Don't sweat it."

"Nonsense! How can you say that about Daphne when her fiancé is here! Do you know who he is?" Holly shot a nervous glance at Derek while scolding me.

When Daphne slandered me, Holly took her word for it right away. Yet when I stated the facts, Holly sided with Daphne still.

I stared at Derek, remarking, "Of course. He's Black Thorn Pack's Alpha. How could I not know him? Alpha Derek, didn't expect you to tie the knot again so soon. Well, why don't you introduce me to Mrs. Sutton?"

Holly looked at Derek in confusion, obviously having no idea that he was married.

"Alpha Derek, Mark and I don't know much about Black Thorn Pack. Who is Tabitha to you?"

Derek replied with a cold face, "She used to be my Luna. But I'm gonna reject her pretty soon."

He made our years of romance sound like crap.

At such thought, I was rather disheartened than angry.

"You'd better keep your word. If you don't reject me, Daphne will always be the homewrecker," I warned.

Daphne chuckled and cut in, "You're about to be expelled from Black Thorn Pack. How dare you act all cocky? If I were you, I'd start to worry about what to do when I became homeless."

I turned my head and glared at Daphne. "I wouldn't end up homeless even if I left Black Thorn Pack! So what if you become part of his pack? To me, you're always a shameless bitch, a pathetic rogue!"

"Shut up!"

Holly interrupted me loudly before I finished.

Then she slapped me hard across the face.

My cheek stung. I looked back, only to see her breathing heavily out of rage.

"Apologize to Daphne!" she commanded.

"No way!" I roared through gritted teeth.

Boiling with anger, Holly lifted her hand, trying to smack me again, but someone stopped her.

Derek eyed Holly icily and ordered, "Apologize to her."

Once she arrived, she was swarmed by the pack's doctors.Amidst the noisy praise, only Osbert remained silent. His cloudy yet sharp eyes were locked on Tabitha."Saving a life is no different than taking one. Your heart can be kind, but your hand must never shake." She paused and took a glance at Osbert. "I learned that from my mentor."Osbert's head snapped up, his eyes blazing like torches as they fixed on her.Their eyes met, and for a heartbeat, the air in the hallway seemed to freeze.Back then, he told Tabitha that.Tabitha was using it as a hint to tell him who she was."You... You still remember it?" Osbert's voice trembled slightly."Yes. I'm grateful to him. However," she paused, " I guess I let him down.""No..." Osbert took a deep, shaky breath. "I mean... If he saw you now, he'd be nothing but proud.""Everyone, Lycan Algernon is awake, and he wants to meet her."As Alban pushed open the

Now, only three men remained in the hallway.Cyrus sat on the bench, his posture as straight as a pine, hands resting on his knees. The window at the end of the hall was ajar, allowing a biting cold wind to pour in, yet none of the men flinched. The atmosphere was frozen, brittle as ice.Cyrus broke the silence, his voice cold. "My father's itinerary was top secret. Only a few people would know it. Someone on the inside leaked the information."Derek nodded, his expression grim. "I agree. Otherwise, given Lycan Algernon's power and the elite guards' protection, no one could have harmed him so easily."Cyrus's sharp gaze swept across their faces like a blade. "If I find out who among us did it, that person will die a miserable death. I'll personally flay him and hang his skin from a flagpole."It was a warning to both Derek and Bentley. As the two primary competitors for the succession, they had the strongest motives.Derek stood with his han

Tabitha's heart skipped. She didn't want to blow her cover, but she couldn't bring herself to lie to the man who had been like a father to her."The surgery was perfect. I knew you could do it, Vanessa," Derek's deep voice cut in, ending the dangerous topic. He stepped in and swept Tabitha into his arms. "Dr. Fairbank, she's exhausted. She needs to rest. I'll leave the rest to you all."Tabitha leaned into him, playing up her fatigue. "Sorry, Dr. Fairbank... I'm so tired..."She didn't want to stay another second; Osbert's eyes were too sharp. She needed to get out before he saw through the disguise. As they emerged from the OR wing, Cyrus met them. The iron-blooded soldier looked at Tabitha with genuine gratefulness."Thank you for saving my father," he said. "I'm on your debt. I've prepared the best room for you to rest. I'll have to ask you to stay for a couple of days until he wakes up, just so we can be sure."Derek nodded, block

The clock was ticking. Everyone was on edge, especially Bentley. He and Derek had been at each other's throats their entire lives, but for the first time, they wanted the same thing: the Lycan had to live, or the pack would rip itself apart. In the middle of this deathly silence, Michelle just wouldn't shut up."You guys seriously believe her? She looks younger than me! What makes her so special?""What makes her special?" Derek snapped, his eyes full of loathing. "The fact that her chances of saving your father are better than zero. Or, do you rather trust yourself?"Michelle was acting like a spoiled kid, yet was so fueled by jealousy and prejudice that she couldn't stand to see anyone else succeed."Aren't you still obsessed with Tabitha? Why are you suddenly caring for this woman? You've only known her for five minutes. Are you really that desperate?"Derek kept silent, ignoring her."Enough!" Cyrus said, releasing his Alpha aura.Michelle flinched, but she still had the nerve to

Bonnie's pride finally crumbled. Regret gnawed at her. Why hadn't she listened to Alban? Why had she ignored Osbert?"Sorry... Sorry, we were wrong about you," Bonnie stammered. She finally bowed in shame. "I apologize for my arrogance, for my disrespect. Please, I'm sorry.""Mom! What are you doing?!" Michelle screamed, her face contorted in horror as if her world was ending. "Have you lost it? You really think she can save Dad? Don't beg her! She's a nobody! She doesn't deserve to be in the same room with him!"Tabitha's lip curled.Michelle wasn't just spoiled; she was delusional. She had no idea that if the Lycan died, her world would collapse.Tabitha reached out and helped Bonnie up, her voice cold. "She's right, Luna. A 'mongrel' like me has no business treating the Lycan."Bonnie spun around and grabbed Michelle. "Shut up! Your ignorance is going to kill us all! Apologize to her right now!""Mom! Just stop it! The heater hummed inside the car, a warm sanctuary against the blizzard raging outside.Tabitha blinked, putting on a mask of wide-eyed innocence."Derek, back when I first started at the academy, I watched my mentor perform a silver extraction. There was a world-famous surgeon there. Right as he was suturing the main artery, his hands started jerking like he'd been electrocuted. He almost killed the patient right then. Osbert did his best to save the guy. Wanna know who that 'famous' surgeon was?"Derek frowned. "You mean... Dr. Simmonds?"Tabitha let out a soft laugh, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Bingo."Her smile faded. "It's called 'Silver Tremor.' It's the ultimate taboo for doctors, a neurological breakdown from long-term silver exposure. It's almost impossible to cure. Once the pressure hits and he catches the scent of a High Alpha's blood, he loses all control. Algernon was shot near the heart; any doctor knows how risky that is. The s
