Chapter 1

Tonight is the night I die.

Loud howls filled the room, splitting through the silence like a blade. My eyes flicked on either side of me as I stood in the centre of the moon beam, the altar was before me, blood still dripped from my palm into it—a symbol of the ceremony.

My palms were sweaty, heart racing. Nothing was happening. The rest howled, their eyes glowing unnaturally but I just stood there, plain. Normal. Uninteresting.

I'd failed the ceremony.

And I was dying, but it wasn't a physical death. It was from the feeling of embarrassment and the shame I'd no doubt brought to my family.

As the cheers for those who had successfully completed the ceremony calmed down, I suddenly felt all eyes flick towards me. I knew the moment they saw that I hadn't manifested my wolf, I saw their faces contort in a mix of confusion and disgust.

I heard the High Priestess whispering some words as though they would enable me to suddenly manifest something I didn't possess. It wasn't that I didn't have a wolf— at least I didn't believe it to be the case. But I was different. And they couldn't know that.

My eyes fell to the crowd. I saw my mother's eyes, pale. Gentle. Worried. And my father, his expression unreadable but I could somehow see the disappointment through it. And then my eyes randomly locked on someone else.

Green eyes, blonde hair, blank expression. The Alpha's son. His eyes met mine for half a breath before he stood up, walking out of the ceremony, seemingly uninterested. My eyes lingered long after he was gone.

And just like that, it was over. No doubt I'd be the talk of the pack for weeks to come.

But there was no time to mourn that because the very next day, I was heading into Crimson Claw Academy.

“Caĺl us if you ever need anything,” my mother wanted softly, brushing my hair aside.

My father stared at me for a while before I finally entered the car. I wasn't sure what I was expecting him to say. He hadn't said anything about the ceremony still and he wasn't much of a talker but those eyes of his had told me to be safe.

The drive to the academy was anything but fun. Somehow I was dreading it more than I ever dreaded the coming of age ceremony. Because I could only fail once at that. But here? I could fail a thousand times over. I'd only gotten a spot as a gift from the Alpha to my father for his exceptional service.

I knew I wouldn't last long here.

The car finally pulled to a stop in front of the huge building. The academy had been in existence for centuries and its architecture was a proof of that. Old, gothic and yet it maintained the same quality of elegance as the more modern campus buildings.

I'd already gotten out of the car, but my legs refused to move as I stared at what was to be my home for the next few weeks, or days—depending on how long it took me to mess up.

My thoughts of impending doom were soon interrupted by the sound of my name. I spun around to see Seth walking towards me. He had a big smile plastered on his face, his arms wide open as he pulled me into a big bear hug.

“Hey there, pigeon.” He pulled away, using his long standing nickname for me. Seth was my best friend—my only friend. He'd gotten into the academy last year and was currently a year above me now.

“I like barely saw you this holiday.” He grinned

“Well that's because you decided to stay back for like half the holiday.” I fired back

He ran a hand through his wavy brown hair. “I had to. I've got team tryouts in a couple of days and I need to ace it so I needed the extra practice.”

He grabbed my bags, already leading me inside. My eyes kept darting everywhere. I was sure my entire aura screamed ‘freshman’

“Didn't you already try out last year?”

“Yeah, but I didn't get in. First years rarely ever do but it was worth a shot.”

I replied with an oh and a small nod.

We stopped in front of large double doors that connected to two separate hallways.

“Oh great, we're in the same hall.” He smiled leading me in while my own face was horrified by the thought of boys and girls sleeping together. Who's bright idea was that?

“Aren't male and female dormitories supposed to be separated?”

“They are, but each hall shares a common room and then one section is fully for the boys the other for the girls. So it's not like they put us in the same rooms, that's against the rules, actually.”

People had already arrived, they chattered in the common room, some sipped coffee, and some were busy doing work outs. It was too much chaos for me. I knew for sure I'd be making my room my biggest companion.

“You should get settled into your room first so I can give you a tour.”

“How about I just stay in my room till the end of semester?”

“When I'm around? No way.” He chuckled.

I pulled out my phone for the schedule we'd been sent a few days before. My room number. 32.

Seth helped me locate it fairly easily. Thankfully there was only one other bed so I wouldn't have to worry about too much interaction. I silently hoped my supposed roommate would just disappear or decide to drop out.

“You got here first so you get to choose the better bed. Sweet.” Seth looked at both corners and picked the one which he considered better and plopped my bags down on it.

As I made a move to collapse on the bed myself, he dragged me out of the room. “Come on, adventure awaits.”

Just as I'm about to gain back my footing, I feel myself crash into someone, or something—one minute I was standing, the next I was tumbling to the ground. What I was touching felt too hard to be human. And yet, it was.

My eyes opened, I looked down at my hands still feeling his abs… then my eyes flicked up to his eyes. Green eyes. Blonde hair. Distant expression. I was sure my cheeks were red as a tomato then as I realised who it was.

Cade.

Tasha's POV “Let's go, it's nothing,” Lawrence continued to pull me towards a vehicle that he personally drove straight to the temple.I was scared, nervous, unwilling, everything that I shouldn't be for this to work. But that thunder clap was a sign of an omen that Lawrence is hell bent on ignoring!“Look, the thunder means nothing. I'm not saying that to force your cooperation, see for yourself,” he handed me a device and I scrolled through it. Truly there wasn't anything new added to the list of doom. But I wasn't reassured. If anything, I wanted to jump out of the window and run!“Doom doesn't present itself to its receivers,” I said as I placed the device in the cup holder. Lawrence's grip on the steering wheel tightened in a scary manner.“Whatever, we didn't come this far to back out. We're doing this,” he pulled into the temple and practically yanked me out of the car and into a side door that I didn't know existed. There was a high priestess there, she wasn't dressed in our

Tasha's POV I cowered in a corner as Lawrence paced by the window. What was he going to do to me?There was a knock on the door and he went to let whoever it was in. It was a medic.“Ma'am, I want to look over your wounds,” I stared at the woman before taking my eyes to Lawrence who gave me a nod like everything was okay between us. Like he didn't try to kill me a few days ago.“It's fine, just let her access the damage and administer treatment. She's from the academy,” like that was supposed to make me trust her with my body?“Ma'am, I don't know what you've heard of us, but we don't compromise on healthcare. The Grande Maestro explained that you both had a spare recently so I understand the distrust. But I assure you that I'm here to take care of you and not to cater to him,” there was something in her voice that made me relax a little.Maybe I just wanted this to be over with so that Lawrence can move on with his game. He never does anything that is of no benefit to him. This incl

Choice's POV I quietly reached for my glass because there's no way this bitch slipped into a seat in front of me without thinking about the consequences.Ever since she did what she did with Lawrence, I made her a solemn promise that she has abided by until now, that is.“If I ever catch you alone, no matter the place, I'll give you a face-lift and help you shed some teeth!”Those were the exact words I told her, she knows I mean it, and she has avoided every single event that I have been in attendance for over a decade. So this was quite a treat for me.“Hey, please just hear me out-” she went as far as talking to me?!Oh hell no!I first emptied my entire glass on her face before slapping her so hard that the entire bar turned to look in our direction.“Did your brain go numb with time?! Didn't I specifically tell you to never, I clearly said never! To never show yourself in my face after what you did to Lydia? Were your brain cells swapped with pudding?! Did I stutter? You all hav

Choice's POV “You can't just waltz into the mating den of a lycanthrope, it's a death wish!”Carl had warned me as soon as I told him that I was going to see Lydia. It was almost nine pm and she hadn't reached out to say if she was alive or dead. I was worried!“What do you mean mating den?! I have to ensure that she's fine!” I said to him as I laced up my shoes but I never made it to the door before an image was forced into my head.It was Lydia and I refused to say what she was doing on top of the Alpha king!“You could have just told me!” I hissed at Carl as my cheeks got heated up. Who wants to see their best friend doing that?!“I did tell you, but you're not listening as usual. Let's go to bed,” I gave him a suspicious look but went back into the house with him. An angry knock came shortly.Carl sighed with annoyance so I went to see who it was. I scoffed as I opened the door and stepped out.“You would think a bullet would communicate our disinterest in talking with you,” I cr

Lydia’s POV I groaned as the chirping of birds reached my ears. The ward was already waning and we would soon need to go back and face the world that frowned on such relationships.Especially for US leaders, what I've done has liberated me but it has put my position and my coven in an awkward position. The Alpha king, I mean, Fred was passed out next to me. My cheeks warmed up as I stared at his toned back, the tattoo that spanned his wings made him look even more attractive. I wanted to run my hand on the lines but I know that the moment I touched him, he'll wake up and then we won't be leaving the bed until noon.I kind of wanted to make use of my legs for the first time in two days. So as sneakily as I could manage, I got out of bed and just stood there. My legs felt foreign but at the same time it felt nice to actually be able to stand on my own.Fred has done a number on my body, bent me in ways I didn't know I could be bent and brought me to questionable heights of pleasure.I

Cade's POV The meeting at the council house started twenty minutes ago, but I was in school so I left in the middle of the announcements from Coach. It was after I had settled down in the meeting that I remembered I didn't send a text to Anaya that I was going home.I sighed and tried to concentrate on the documents in front of me.Crap, the Nightfang pack were coming as well. It seems this summer is going to be tedious. Malachi was such a headache on a good day, I'm sure he'll have no issues migrating to migraine status at the drop of a hat. After the meeting I went to talk to my dad.“Hey dad,” I said to him and noticed he was on the phone. He raised a finger and I sat and waited for him. When he dropped the phone he sighed deeply.“The Alpha king is kind of missing, but he doesn't want to be found either. I just got off the phone with Alpha Isla and she sounds more annoyed than concerned, probably the pregnancy hormones at play,” my dad said and I didn't know how I felt about this
