Ethan arrived at the alliance fall mixer with nerves already frayed. The student union ballroom pulsed with music, string lights twinkling overhead, rainbow flags draped across walls. Friends swarmed him immediately: Alex in dramatic eyeliner, Mia with a glittery top, Jordan carrying glow sticks. They formed a protective circle, scanning for Caleb.

"He's by the drinks," Alex murmured. "Looking like a lost puppy. Hasn't moved toward us."

Ethan glanced across the crowded floor. Caleb stood alone, cup in hand, posture relaxed but eyes alert. When their gazes met, Caleb offered a small nod respectful, distant then turned back to watching the dance floor.

Ethan exhaled. Safe. For now.

The night unfolded in layers. Friends pulled him into dancing, laughter bubbling as Mia twirled dramatically. Music shifted from upbeat to slower rhythms. Couples paired off. Ethan stayed in the group, sipping punch, trying to lose himself in the moment.

But every few songs, his eyes found Caleb. Not staring, just aware. Lingering.

An hour in, the DJ announced a slow set. Lights dimmed to soft blues and purples. Ethan excused himself for air, slipping through side doors to the outdoor balcony overlooking the quad.

Cool night air hit him like relief. Stars visible above campus lights. He leaned on the railing, breathing deep.

Footsteps behind him.

He turned.

Caleb.

Hands raised slightly. "Saw you leave. Just checking if you were okay. I can go back inside."

Ethan's heart slammed. "It's fine. Public space."

Caleb nodded, staying near the door. "Nice night."

Silence stretched, charged.

Ethan spoke first. "You came."

"Yeah." Caleb's voice low. "Wanted to support. See the community. Learn."

Ethan studied him. "And?"

"And it's beautiful." Caleb's eyes softened. "People free. Happy. I hid from this for years."

Ethan's throat tightened. "Because of fear."

"Because I was a coward." Caleb stepped closer but kept distance. "That night under the stars... I panicked. Dad's voice in my head. Friends. The lie I lived. I chose safety over truth. Hurt you worst."

Ethan gripped railing. "I know."

"I don't expect forgiveness." Caleb's voice cracked. "But I need you to know: I was into you. Terrified, but into you. Still am. Working on myself. Therapy. Alone. No rush."

Ethan's pulse roared. "Why tell me now?"

"Because silence killed us once." Caleb met his eyes. "Truth, even painful, is better."

Wind rustled leaves. Stars watched above.

Ethan felt walls tremble. "I can't."

"I know." Caleb's smile sad. "Project only. Boundaries. I respect them."

He turned to leave.

"Wait." Ethan's voice stopped him.

Caleb paused.

"Why the coffee order?" Ethan asked quietly. "The deference? The lingering looks?"

Caleb exhaled. "Small ways to show I remember. Care. Without pushing. You deserve kindness I never gave."

Ethan's chest ached. "It confuses me."

"I'm sorry." Caleb's eyes shone. "Didn't mean to."

They stood in silence. Music drifted from inside.

Ethan spoke softly. "You saved that freshman from falling earlier. Gentle. Different."

Caleb shrugged. "Trying to be."

Another beat.

"I should go," Caleb said.

Ethan nodded.

Caleb reached door, paused. "If you ever want to talk really talk I'm here. No pressure."

Ethan didn't answer.

Caleb slipped inside.

Ethan stayed on balcony, heart racing, mind spinning.

Twist came minutes later.

Alex burst out. "Emergency. Inside. Now."

Ethan followed.

In ballroom corner, drunk guy from earlier same freshman now arguing loudly with security. Homophobic slurs flying.

Caleb stood between them, calm but firm. "He's drunk. Let me get him out. No need for escalation."

Security hesitated.

Freshman lunged.

Caleb caught him gently, guiding him away.

Ethan watched from doorway.

Caleb glanced up eyes met Ethan's across chaos.

Held.

Then turned back to de-escalate.

Security thanked him. Caleb led freshman out quietly.

Ethan's heart twisted harder.

Friends surrounded him.

Mia: "He just protected the space."

Alex: "That was... hot. And good."

Jordan: "Change looks real."

Ethan stared at empty doorway.

Caleb returned minutes later, face tired.

Their eyes met again.

This time, Ethan didn't look away first.

Caleb offered small nod.

Then left.

Ethan stayed frozen.

Friends pulled him back to dance.

But night changed.

Cliffhanger sharp: balcony whispers echoed.

Truth spoken.

Boundaries tested.

Heart racing toward inevitable.

Tomorrow project meeting.

Alone again?

Or something shifting?

Ethan didn't know.

But pull stronger.

Unstoppable.

The Saturday coffees had settled into rhythm—same downtown cafe, same corner table, same black coffees cooling between laced fingers. No rush. No demands. • Always into You   Chapter 35: Therapy Breakthrough

Ethan had been carrying the weight of the downtown coffee encounters like a secret flame—small, steady, growing brighter with each Saturday. Hands laced across the table. Quiet admissions. No rush. No pressure. Just Caleb showing up, honest and patient, letting Ethan set every boundary and pace. The fear still whispered—memories of the graduation party, the laughter, the humiliation—but hope had started shouting louder. And that terrified him most of all.He booked an emergency therapy session with Dr. Ramirez for Friday afternoon. The counseling center felt smaller today, the familiar armchair less like sanctuary and more like a confessional.Dr. Ramirez greeted him with her usual calm smile. "You requested an extra session. What's on your mind?"Ethan sank into the chair, hands twisting in his lap. "Caleb. We've been... talking. More than talking. Holding hands. Coffee dates disguised as casual meetups. He says he's changed. Proves it every time. But I'm scared."She nodded slowly.

The final presentation had come and gone, earning the group top marks and a rare smile from Professor Harlan. No more forced library meetings. No more project deadlines. • Always into You   Chapter 32: Coffee Dates Disguised

The final presentation came and went in a blur of polished slides and polite applause. Their group earned high praise—Professor Harlan highlighted the "mature handling of complex group dynamics" and gave them full marks for depth and cohesion. Sarah hugged everyone. Malik fist-bumped. Caleb offered Ethan a small, private smile that lingered just long enough to make Ethan's pulse stutter.Afterward, in the emptying lecture hall, Sarah and Malik left first, chattering about celebrating with pizza. Caleb lingered near Ethan's desk while he packed his bag."Good work today," Caleb said quietly."You too." Ethan zipped his laptop case. "No more forced meetings."Caleb's smile was cautious. "Feels strange.""Yeah." Ethan met his eyes. "But maybe... good strange."Caleb nodded slowly. "If you ever want to grab coffee—off campus, neutral, no pressure—I'm open."Ethan's heart kicked. "Tomorrow? 11am. Same downtown place."Caleb's breath caught visibly. "I'll be there."Ethan walked out before

  • Always into You   Chapter 31: Project Progress

Ethan arrived at the library Wednesday afternoon with the weight of the previous walk still pressing against his ribs. The memory of Caleb's fingers lacing with his—brief, careful, electric—had followed him through every sleepless night and every distracted lecture since. No kiss. No grand declaration. Just touch. Honest. Real. And it had cracked open something Ethan wasn't sure he could close again. He claimed their usual table on the main floor—glass walls, constant foot traffic, safety in visibility. Laptop open. Notes spread. Breathing exercises silent in his head: in for four, hold for four, out for six.Sarah and Malik arrived first, chatting about weekend plans and a new alliance poetry slam. Caleb entered five minutes early, carrying a stack of printed sources and his usual black coffee.
