The balcony doors closed behind Caleb with a soft click, leaving Ethan alone under the stars. The cool night air carried the faint thump of music from inside the ballroom, but out here everything felt hushed, intimate, almost sacred. Ethan gripped the railing tighter, heart still pounding from the rescue inside—the way Caleb had stepped between him and the drunk freshman's slurs without hesitation, voice calm but firm, body a quiet shield. No showboating. No glance back for approval. Just instinct. Protection.

Ethan stayed out there longer than intended, letting the wind cool his flushed skin. When he finally slipped back inside, the party had shifted: lights softer, music slower, couples swaying in dim corners. Friends found him immediately.

Alex grabbed his arm. "You okay? We saw the whole thing. Caleb just... put himself in front of that guy. For you."

Mia nodded, eyes wide. "No hesitation. That was real."

Jordan spoke quietly. "Change isn't just words. That was action."

Ethan managed a nod. "I'm okay. Just... processing."

They pulled him toward a quieter corner near the exit. Mia handed him water. "Sit. Breathe."

He did. But his eyes kept scanning the room.

Caleb was gone.

Alex followed his gaze. "He left right after security took the guy. Didn't even stay for thanks."

Ethan's chest tightened. "He didn't need thanks."

Mia squeezed his shoulder. "You sure you're good?"

"Yeah." Ethan stood. "I think... I need air again. Different air."

Alex raised an eyebrow. "Want company?"

"No. Just... need to think."

They let him go.

Ethan stepped back onto the balcony. Empty now. Stars brighter. He leaned on the railing, replaying everything: the slurs, Caleb's steady back, the way he'd glanced at Ethan afterward—not for praise, just to check he was safe.

Footsteps again.

Ethan turned, expecting Alex.

Caleb.

He stopped at the door. "I didn't think you'd still be out here. I can leave."

Ethan shook his head. "Stay."

Caleb hesitated, then stepped forward slowly. "You sure?"

"Yeah."

Caleb joined him at the railing, leaving two feet of space between them. No pressure. No crowding.

Silence settled, comfortable this time.

Ethan spoke first. "You didn't have to do that. Step in."

"I did." Caleb's voice low. "No one talks to you like that. Not while I'm around."

Ethan glanced sideways. "Why?"

"Because I know what it feels like to be on the receiving end." Caleb stared at the stars. "High school wasn't all golden for me either. Teammates... said things. Tested boundaries. I laughed it off. Played along. Built the facade thicker every day. Until I couldn't breathe under it."

Ethan's breath caught. "You never said."

"Couldn't." Caleb's laugh was small, bitter. "Too scared. So I hurt the one person who actually saw me. Pushed you away hardest because you were closest to the truth."

Ethan turned fully toward him. "What truth?"

Caleb met his eyes. "That I wanted to be near you. Talk to you. Touch you. Not as a friend. As... more. And it terrified me."

Ethan's pulse roared. "You said it tonight. On this balcony. Still am."

Caleb nodded slowly. "Still am. But that's not your burden. I'm not asking you to carry it."

"Then why tell me?"

"Because you deserve to know the real reason I was cruel." Caleb's voice cracked. "It wasn't you. Never you. It was me hating myself for wanting what I thought I couldn't have."

Ethan looked away, throat tight. "I thought you hated me."

"Never." Caleb's whisper fierce. "I hated that I couldn't be brave enough to admit I didn't hate you. That I... felt everything."

Silence stretched again.

Ethan spoke softly. "I kept waiting for the punchline tonight. For you to laugh it off. Or make it a joke."

Caleb shook his head. "No more jokes. No more hiding. Even if you walk away forever after this, at least you'll know the truth."

Ethan's eyes stung. "I don't know what to do with that."

"You don't have to do anything." Caleb's voice gentle. "Just... hear it. That's all I wanted."

They stood in silence, stars above, city lights below.

Ethan finally spoke. "I need time."

"Take it." Caleb stepped back. "All of it."

He turned toward the door.

"Wait." Ethan's voice stopped him again.

Caleb paused.

Ethan took one step closer. "Thank you. For tonight. For stepping in. For... being honest."

Caleb's smile was small, vulnerable. "Anytime."

He slipped inside.

Ethan stayed on the balcony until the music faded and the party began to empty. Friends found him eventually.

Alex: "You disappeared."

Ethan: "Needed space. He came out again. Talked more. Cracked open completely."

Mia: "And?"

Ethan looked up at the stars. "I think... I believe him."

Jordan: "What now?"

Ethan exhaled. "I don't know. But I'm not running."

They walked him back to the dorm.

In his room, alone, Ethan journaled by phone light.

Dawn confessions on the balcony. He admitted everything—fear, desire, self-hate. Stepped between me and slurs tonight without thinking. Protected me. No show. Just instinct. Facade gone. Underneath... someone real. Hurting. Trying. I thanked him. He said anytime. I believe him. Scary. Hope dangerous. But real. Heart racing toward something I can't name yet.

He stared at the ceiling.

Sleep came slow.

Dreams gentle: balcony again, stars closer, Caleb's hand brushing his—not accidental. No pull away.

Morning light crept in.

Phone buzzed—text from Caleb.

Caleb: No pressure. Just... if you want to talk again. Walk. Coffee. Or silence. I'm here. Thank you for last night.

Ethan stared.

Typed back slowly.

Ethan: Wednesday. After rehearsal. Walk. Same path. Bring honesty.

Sent.

Heart raced—not fear.

Anticipation.

Caleb reply instant.

Caleb: I'll be there. Thank you.

Ethan powered off.

Cliffhanger sharp: next Wednesday.

Another walk.

Deeper truth.

No rush.

But momentum unstoppable.

Dawn confessions over.

Something new beginning.

The Saturday coffees had settled into rhythm—same downtown cafe, same corner table, same black coffees cooling between laced fingers. No rush. No demands. • Always into You   Chapter 35: Therapy Breakthrough

Ethan had been carrying the weight of the downtown coffee encounters like a secret flame—small, steady, growing brighter with each Saturday. Hands laced across the table. Quiet admissions. No rush. No pressure. Just Caleb showing up, honest and patient, letting Ethan set every boundary and pace. The fear still whispered—memories of the graduation party, the laughter, the humiliation—but hope had started shouting louder. And that terrified him most of all.He booked an emergency therapy session with Dr. Ramirez for Friday afternoon. The counseling center felt smaller today, the familiar armchair less like sanctuary and more like a confessional.Dr. Ramirez greeted him with her usual calm smile. "You requested an extra session. What's on your mind?"Ethan sank into the chair, hands twisting in his lap. "Caleb. We've been... talking. More than talking. Holding hands. Coffee dates disguised as casual meetups. He says he's changed. Proves it every time. But I'm scared."She nodded slowly.

No forced proximity. Just choice—quiet, deliberate, growing stronger with each meeting.Ethan arrived early, heart already thudding. The past two weeks had shifted something fundamental. Hands held longer. Conversations deeper. Caleb's honesty had become a steady current—never pushing, always present. The fear still whispered, but hope spoke louder now.He claimed the table. Ordered. The final presentation had come and gone, earning the group top marks and a rare smile from Professor Harlan. No more forced library meetings. No more project deadlines. The excuse that had kept them orbiting each other for months had vanished, leaving only choice in its place.Ethan felt the shift immediately. The campus paths felt wider, the days longer. Caleb's texts arrived like quiet pulses—never demanding, always careful.Caleb: No pressure. Just checking in. Presentation feedback was great. • Always into You   Chapter 32: Coffee Dates Disguised

The final presentation came and went in a blur of polished slides and polite applause. Their group earned high praise—Professor Harlan highlighted the "mature handling of complex group dynamics" and gave them full marks for depth and cohesion. Sarah hugged everyone. Malik fist-bumped. Caleb offered Ethan a small, private smile that lingered just long enough to make Ethan's pulse stutter.Afterward, in the emptying lecture hall, Sarah and Malik left first, chattering about celebrating with pizza. Caleb lingered near Ethan's desk while he packed his bag."Good work today," Caleb said quietly."You too." Ethan zipped his laptop case. "No more forced meetings."Caleb's smile was cautious. "Feels strange.""Yeah." Ethan met his eyes. "But maybe... good strange."Caleb nodded slowly. "If you ever want to grab coffee—off campus, neutral, no pressure—I'm open."Ethan's heart kicked. "Tomorrow? 11am. Same downtown place."Caleb's breath caught visibly. "I'll be there."Ethan walked out before

  • Always into You   Chapter 31: Project Progress

Ethan arrived at the library Wednesday afternoon with the weight of the previous walk still pressing against his ribs. The memory of Caleb's fingers lacing with his—brief, careful, electric—had followed him through every sleepless night and every distracted lecture since. No kiss. No grand declaration. Just touch. Honest. Real. And it had cracked open something Ethan wasn't sure he could close again. He claimed their usual table on the main floor—glass walls, constant foot traffic, safety in visibility. Laptop open. Notes spread. Breathing exercises silent in his head: in for four, hold for four, out for six.Sarah and Malik arrived first, chatting about weekend plans and a new alliance poetry slam. Caleb entered five minutes early, carrying a stack of printed sources and his usual black coffee. He nodded politely to everyone, sat opposite Ethan with deliberate space between them, and set the papers down carefully."Good to see everyone," Caleb said quietly. "I compiled the latest sou
