The halls of Vaelcrest Hold bustled with activities as servants moved swiftly to tend to the needs of the royal guests and their kinsmen.
Lady Evelyne walked through the corridors with Lucien trailing behind her, his small boots making impatient taps as they walked. “Must I come?” he grumbled for the umpteenth time. “You must,” his mother replied without breaking stride. He sighed. He didn’t see why they had to visit the Queen at all. The woman was cold, distant, and nothing like her jolly husband, the King. He couldn't put a finger on it but there was just something he didn't like about her. He glanced up at his mother's face to glean something from her expression but as usual, Lady Evelyne’s face was unreadable. Oh damn you and your pretty stoic face, mother. He hadn't seen Sophia since the introduction which was fine with him. The last thing he wanted her to do was start showing off in front of the queen which would then lead to the queen knowing that he was manaless. He was curious about her son, the young prince and if he had already been assessed. If he had, it was another reason for Duke Aldric to be reminded of his own son's ineptitude. When they reached the room where the Queen was, the guards at the door straightened. At a nod from Evelyne, one stepped inside to announce their arrival. A moment later, they were ushered inside. Queen Margaret sat near a vanity, her delicate fingers removing the last of her bejeweled earrings. Beside her on the bed, Prince Dorian was playing with a wooden horse by himself. A maid stood beside her, ready to assist, but the Queen waved her away when she saw who had come. “Lady Evelyne,” she greeted coolly, then glanced at Lucien. “And young Lord Vaelcrest.” Evelyne dipped a graceful curtsy. “Your Majesty, I came to ensure you had everything you required. You'll have to manage our humble castle. I'm sure you're used to more fancy accomodations.” Lucien looked between them in worry as he was sure that the Queen would notice the sarcastic bite in his mother's words. However, Queen Margaret just took a long look around the room and then focused back on her with a smile. “I assure you, we are well tended. I've stayed at worse places.” Lucien squirmed as the silence stretched. He could sense the tension. It wasn’t outright hostility—no, that would have been easier to deal with. It was hostility draped in niceties. Then, the door burst open, and Sophia entered the room casually as though it was hers. Lucien was surprised at her lack of formality and was waiting for their mother to reprimand her. “Your Majesty!” she said cheerfully, giving a quick curtsy. “Oh, I love your dress, it's so beautiful.” “Thank you, you're beautiful too,” The Queen replied slowly and Lucien could see that she was just as startled as he was and didn't quite know what to make of her. “You're too kind, your majesty. Mom, could you make the royal seamstress make me a dress just like this?” “I'm sure she can…” Lady Evelyne replied, saving her scolding for later. Sophia's eyes then flickered to Dorian and then back to the Queen. “Your majesty, could I borrow Prince Dorian?” The young prince, who had been concentrating on his own game perked up. “Borrow me?” “Just for a game, it's boring playing with my brother alone,” Sophia clarified, her blue eyes sparkling with mischief. Queen Margaret then turned to her son to know what he thought. “I'll like to play with them, I'm getting bored of playing with Blaze,” He said, flipping the toy horse in his hands. “Please, Your Majesty,” Sophia pressed. “We won’t go far.” The Queen hesitated, her sharp eyes going between Sophia and Lady Evelyne. Then, with a slight incline of her head, she relented. “Very well. But not for long.” Dorian got up from the bed and went to join the Vaelcrest children, curiosity lighting up his small face. Sophia then dragged Lucien from where he stood with their mother and then the three children left the room. Lady Evelyne and the Queen listened to their footsteps until it died down and there was silence in the room. “They are spirited,” Margaret remarked at last, moving toward the small table where her tea had gone cold. * * * Outside in the open courtyard, Sophia led the two boys toward a quiet corner, where she knew that they wouldn't be disturbed. “You’re not very much like your mother,” she told Dorian thoughtfully. Dorian tilted his head. “What do you mean?” “She doesn’t like my mother very much,” Sophia stated plainly. Lucien shot his sister a warning look, but Dorian only frowned. “Why not?” “They were rivals when they were young.” Dorian blinked. “Rivals?” Sophia grinned. “Want to hear the full story? Beat me in a duel, and I’ll tell you.” Dorian’s face fell slightly. “I… I haven’t awakened yet.” Sophia laughed. “Well, that’s a problem, isn’t it? How’s a prince supposed to rule if he can’t even hold a sword properly?” Dorian pouted. “I will awaken! Just not yet.” “Sure, sure,” Sophia teased. “In that case, let’s play something else. Do you know any games other than playing with toy horses. Blaze. What sort of stupid name is that?” Dorian face grew red at her words but he didn't say anything back to her. “Blaze is not a stupid name. I'm sure you named him that for how fast he runs,” Lucien said consoling him with a pat on his back and shooting a dirty look at Sophia. “Thank you, I don't really play any games since I don't have a brother or sister—” “I knew you'll stand up for him” Sophia said interjecting. “Well in that case, let's play hide and seek? I'm sure you know that.” Dorian nodded and Sophia grinned. “Alright, you two hide, and I’ll count.” Dorian nodded and then bolted into the darker corridors leading toward the western halls. Lucien hesitated for a moment before running off in a different direction. Sophia covered her eyes and began to count. * * * A figure watched the children from the shadows. They had been lingering and waiting for the right moment. When Prince Dorian darted off alone, they immediately went on the move. Their footsteps were silent and their presence went unnoticed. As the young prince ran deeper into the corridors, the figure moved with quiet purpose and vanished into the same direction Dorian had gone.‘He… He’s hereee!!!’Gary's body trembled with excitement, his eyes wide as saucers. He was overjoyed beyond compare. He didn’t think he had ever been this happy from the day he was born until now.‘H-he must have woken up due to all the noise…’ With that in mind, Gary convinced himself that the reason he had been screaming and shouting like a pathetic little rat was so he could get the Leader’s attention.Yes… this was all a part of the plan! His thoughts raced with relief at the sight of Leader Gus.‘N-now that Leader Gus is here, I’m saved!’ he thought, a grin spreading across his face.“Looks like you’re the only one who survived. Of all my capable men, it had to be you…”Gary felt his body rise from the pool of blood. He was being lifted by the Leader, who firmly grabbed his head with one hand,Leader Gus was an extremely robust man—many could call him very fat. However, he wasn’t particularly obese. Rather, he proudly claimed that the reason for his huge size and round potbelly
"Alright, everyone! Looks like we’re good to go!" Adonis beamed with excitement, ready to lead the students out of the Castle gates. It was unusual to see Adonis so cheerful. It was clearly his first time leaving, but it seemed to some perceptive eyes that he already knew what to look forward to in town."Since we’re all dressed casually, they won’t recognize us as anything special. The Council hasn’t made the Otherworlder Summon public yet," Adonis explained. The Mages, along with everyone else involved, had taken an Oath of silence, so discussion about it remained confined within the Royal Estate. Even the guards stationed there couldn’t breathe a word about it to outsiders.“If you ever get into trouble, just flash the Royal Badge. You all have them with you, right? So it should be fine…”After Adonis finished explaining everything, everyone grew restless, eager to leave.“Alright then, let’s get moving!” Adonis declared. The students filed out, with the Hero leading the way, fol
“W-where is he…?”Alicia mumbled to herself, scanning the town square with a single person in mind.—Rey!‘I thought he would want to hang out together.’This would be the first time they would explore the town, so she thought he would want to do it with her.She imagined they would check out the marketplace and even have tons of fun… like on a date. But he was nowhere to be found now.‘I guess I was the only one who was looking forward to this…’ Alicia tried to shake off her disappointment when she sensed a shadow looming behind her. Someone was approaching her, and for a moment she suspected it would be Rey.‘Maybe he quickly went to get something and came back for me.’It was sort of rude, and she would have to give him an earful for it, but Alicia was relieved. This meant they could finally hang out. However, the moment she turned back and looked at the person who approached her, it wasn’t the boy she longed to see.She recognized the face, though seeing it didn’t exactly make he
‘Oof! This is looking bad…’As Rey was on the ground, eating dust like the rest of his friends, he actively observed the current battle unfolding before him.Of course, he did so inconspicuously, since most of the people that Billy had defeated were either unconscious or too exhausted to pay attention.‘I made sure to get eliminated among the first batch of students. He practically one-shot me…’ Rey smiled, almost as if he was proud of that achievement. He hadn’t spoken to Billy since that night when he walked back to their living quarters with Alicia. However, he couldn't help but notice the constant glare Billy directed his way.‘I don’t understand his problem. If he wants to talk to Alicia, he can just go find her in the library. I’m sure they’d hit it off there…’ Rey mused to himself, though the idea of Billy invading the sanctuary of the library didn’t sit well with him, it remained an option for Billy.‘Billy looks pretty well-toned now. He’s also in great shape. Plus, he’s stro
‘Hehe! Finally, I’m back!’Rey exclaimed with a wide grin on his face, stepping confidently down the spacious passageway of the seventh floor. He had been looking forward to this moment for a while now, and there were a lot of things he couldn’t wait to start doing.‘I made sure to properly understand every single detail about Hobs that I read.’Despite the incomplete research on them, Rey had understood practically all there was to know at this point. Now, the time had come to put that knowledge into action. As per the plan, he would ensure their civilization flourished by teaching them a bunch of useful things and ensuring that they evolved a lot in the process too.‘I need to also conduct experiments to observe the effects of different Monster Cores on them.’Rey was genuinely curious about what would happen, and he was itching to find out.“SKRRIAAAK.”“GURRIAKKA.”“HUKAKAYA.”The sounds of Hobgoblins greeted his ears as he entered the clearing. The familiar putrid odor lingered
“Haha! Is it all done?” A hefty man, his belly protruding, emerged from the 'staff-only' room.He had blood stains on his hand, and each finger had rings on them. His fat-ridden body moved slowly as he cleaned his bloodied hands with a rag and flung it to the side once he was done.“Oh, Leader? Did you kill that woman already?” One of the men who had secured both Alicia and Billy said with a somewhat disappointed face.“What do you think?” The fat man replied, a twisted grin on his faceThough he had cleaned his hands, stains of red still appeared in some areas.“I-I see… I shouldn’t have asked in the first place."In all honesty, this man—as well as the rest of his six comrades—wanted to have his way with her.He had been looking forward to enjoying the waitress for some time now.‘When we killed her Boss and took over this shop, I expected my time to come soon…’He felt frustrated that his Leader had done away with her already.“She intentionally tripped, that woman. I was watching
“Haaa… haaa…”A young, dark-haired man stood at the center of what appeared to be a corpse party. His face was hidden behind a dark mask, but his eyes glowed bright red, peering out from beneath the hair that covered his face.In this hellish world, one filled with unbearable heat, steam, and flaming geysers, the young man let out a musty sigh and chuckled.“Hehehe… hahaha… hahahahahaha!!!”Gleaning Monster Cores appeared around him, as well as the destroyed bodies of what appeared to be crimson-looking monkeys—a striking variant of the Monkey Monsters and BigFoot Monsters The creatures had dark, crimson bodies covered in dirt. Now, their bodies were a chaotic mess, with their insides strewn about and cooked by the blistering heat of the area.“Looks like I made it in time!” The boy chuckled, a smirk playing on his lips as he spotted a crawling figure ahead. It was the Boss Monster—a colossal Crimson Bigfoot—struggling to crawl away on just one remaining limb after losing three to th
“This isn’t how it’s supposed to go…”Adonis muttered to himself, his gaze fixed on the night sky. While he couldn’t recall every single detail from the past, this particular incident was engraved in his memory.‘The kidnapping of Billy and Alicia… it’s supposed to happen way further in the future!’Sure, a lot of things had been altered now, but he hadn’t expected such a drastic change to the original timeline.‘They’ll nearly be sold at the slave auction a few days after being captured, but thankfully the investigation was done before the auction was completed.’As a result, the Royal Knights swooped in and apprehended a lot of criminals in the Black Market and Slavery World.Unfortunately, this huge victory came with a great loss.‘Alicia’s mental state became unstable and she went insane. Billy was fine, but he was so concerned with Alicia’s health that he didn’t focus on training any longer…’Eventually, Alicia’s mental health deteriorated to the point where she eventually commi
Rey took in a deep breath. He had never been in an actual sale before, but that didn’t stop him from trying his best.Besides, there were a bunch of things he hadn’t done before, but he still managed to scale through them on the first try.‘Fighting monsters is a good example…’Currently, he was walking a fine line.‘I have to be careful.’“The Grade is considerably high, and since this is a wholesale, you should know that I have over a thousand pieces,” Rey finally spoke, his voice clear and his tone confident.“I am well aware, but—”“I am also well aware of your procedures. However, I have mine. And that entails speaking to a higher-up when it comes to business of this scale.”Rey could already see anxiety creep in on the face of the man in glasses. He just had to keep pushing.“We’re talking goods worth hundreds, if not thousands of Platinum Coins. Do you really think you are sufficient to handle such a trade? Will you take full responsibility?”“S-sir, I’m just doing my job…” the
“We’re going on a short break. I’ll be right back!”The way Billy stormed out of the training grounds made it clear that he wasn’t in a great mood. The onlookers could clearly see that Rey, who had been a nobody until now, had managed to get under Billy’s skin merely by using unexpected tactics during their match. The gazes they now directed towards him was one of silent admiration and pride. While they weren’t the ones who won, it still felt good!********‘So many eyes are on me…’Rey was currently lying on the grassy plains, his eyes tightly shut as he enjoyed the fresh air and nice weather. He didn’t particularly like the attention that was being showered on him, yet he understood it was unavoidable.‘This is the price for standing out…’However, Rey was certain that even if he had lost to Billy, he would still have attracted a ton of attention—though not for positive reasons. He would have been pitied and seen as weak prey.‘I don’t want that. Just because I prefer not to stand o
"Good morning, everyone! Sir Brutus won’t be here today, so I’ll lead your Martial Arts Class instead.”The shock written on everyone’s face as they stared at the person speaking was priceless. No one could have anticipated this outcome, leaving them all staring in wide-eyed surprise.“Adonis is busy with the Alpha Group, so I guess you’ll have to settle for me.” The one who said this, with a bright smile on his excited face, was none other than Billy McGuire. Both Head Warrior Brutus and Grand Mage Lucielle would be away for the next few days, and there was no one left to teach the students, so they had to teach each other.Initially, when this was announced, everyone assumed that training would be put on hold until their teachers returned. How wrong they were…“This has to be a joke, right? Why are you the one teaching us? You’re practically one of us!”As expected, Adam flared up in rage.It was as if he had been waiting for a moment like this where his anger would be justified.
“G-GERUK!”In Hobgoblin tongue, that meant “Monster!”As the Hobgoblin Chief absorbed the reality of his people's deaths, that word kept playing in his mind over and over again.Dozens of Hobgoblins were slayed in a single moment, and the voice of their killer echoed in depraved laughter as he inflicted an unjust punishment.Just what… what did he and his people do to deserve this?!For the seven months that he had been the Chief of the Hobgoblins, they had enjoyed nothing but peace and prosperity. The Chief had eagerly looked forward to the day when he could relinquish his duties and join his ancestors in the earth. It seemed that day would arrive within a month or two, and he had been anticipating it happily.Yet, this had to happen in his lifetime? During his rulership? Why?!The ancient fables of the Hobgoblin society told of a time when they were the prey of the NightWolves, but thanks to the leadership of the great KoKuKa, the Hob Chief at the time, they were able to turn the
“Sir! It’s such a pleasant surprise to see you!” Rey was instantly greeted by a very excited Aldred Winsley. The man was grinning sheepishly at him. He seemed almost starstruck, like a fan meeting their favorite celebrity for the first time.‘He’s literally gushing…’ was Rey’s impression as he nodded slightly, entering the room.‘I was just asking your subordinate here when we might see you next.’Rey glanced at Noah and noticed him giving an uncomfortable smile.‘Were they pressuring him to convince me to come? Is that why he took so long?’It was just a guess, so Rey dismissed it.“In any case, it really is good to have you here. We have a lot to discuss.”Taking a seat on the sofa, Rey observed as Noah quickly positioned himself behind him.‘Good. He knows how to keep appearances without me needing to tell him…’ Rey felt relieved.Noah seemed to be able to handle himself in business now, but sometimes he was still an indecisive klutz.Like now, when he allowed his time to be delay
“Keuk!”Billy winced as something landed heavily on his stomach, the force of it creating a rush of wind even before impact.Fortunately, his quick step backward lessened the impact of the blow by a considerable degree.‘A-ahh…!’Still, a sharp burning sensation spread across his abdomen, making him grit his teeth to suppress a cry.It stung him, to say the least, but he endured the pain.He also tried to hide his downright shock, but Billy failed woefully at that. His bulging eyes were glued to Rey, who had resumed his standby stance—almost as if prepared to deliver another volley.‘D-did Rey just land a hit… on me?’ Billy stared in disbelief.Sure, Billy was aware that he lacked the advantage of using his incredible Skills, but his Stats were meant to be superior. How was Rey able to do something like that?!‘Calm down, Billy. He just got lucky. Yes… I was distracted and he had a lucky shot.’After chalking it down to a fluke, Billy found himself regaining composure. There was no wa
After the Trial, everyone went their way and Rey had to return to his room.Although he had the freedom to wander the central Living Room, he opted to stay put since he preferred not to.No one could blame him.As night descended and everyone else slept soundly, a certain student couldn’t sleep."Damn it…" He muttered, his eyes were wide open as he stared at the ceiling. Before long, he sat upright and clapped his hand over his face.“I screwed up big time…” He murmured in the dark.It was hard to make out the expression on his face, but it appeared to be a grimace. ‘I didn’t expect to be asked for another testimony. It wasn’t part of the plan…’In the dark of the night, Adam Sanchez lay on the bed going over the earlier events of the day.How he had been humiliated before everyone.“I really fucked up!”“Ahh… don’t blame yourself too much.” A voice suddenly said from the corner of the room.“Eep!”Like a little child, Adam shrieked as he jumped from his position, startled. The figu
In a luxurious office in an undisclosed location, a man stood by the window, paying no attention to the elegant chair and stunning desk behind him.The blond hair on his head was a lot longer than a man’s, but a tad shorter than a woman’s. He had a few wrinkles on his face, indicating his age, and a short beard that was neatly trimmed. His outfit matched the layout of the room—elegant and clearly expensive. He was watching the events of the marketplace—the Black Market—with a smile on his face.As one of the six members of the Obsidian Council, it pleased him to see the community thriving. As he savored the taste of his wine and reminisced, a sharp knock interrupted his thoughts. The man’s emerald eyes snapped towards the door, his smile slowly fading.“Come in.”The door creaked open, revealing a man dressed in a lavish waistcoat and formal attire. Despite his youthful appearance—likely in his early thirties—the wisdom reflected in his gaze betrayed his age. This was Aldred Winsley
[Moments Earlier]“It’s about time…”Adam Sanchez rose from his bed with a resolute expression on his face.As his eyes stared into the distance, his face fixed on the door that stood meters away, he had a vacant expression. His lips trembled slightly as he hid the special dagger in his pocket.‘It’s pretty late now. It’s the perfect moment to strike…’To prepare for this moment, his partner had granted him another Enchanted Item—a Stealth Necklace.Using that, along with his sole B-Tier Skill, Adam figured he could get the job done.‘No matter how strong he is… Adonis will be vulnerable in his sleep!’The floor seemed to creak as Adam took steps forward. It could have been his imagination, but the journey to the door felt longer than usual.Reaching the door at last, he placed his hand on the knob with a gentle touch.“Haaa…” He took a deep breath and calmed himself.Clearing his mind of distractions, Adam focused solely on his goal. His goal was simple, and the stage was set for hi
