Constance

William stopped at the outer ring exactly as the binding demanded, his hand releasing mine with visible reluctance, and I crossed the remaining distance alone, the stone against my ribs burning steady and hot, the low hum beneath the frozen ground climbing to meet me with every step.

The Serpent Mother waited where I'd left her, her expression unreadable as I knelt once more beside the ancient basin.

"I'm not here to answer yet," I told her, before she could speak. "I'm here to ask so

ConstanceThe light didn't blind me. It opened. The white line widened into a doorway twice the height of a man, edged in gold, and the cave behind me went silent. No surf. No shouting from the beach. Only two notes holding each other up."Don't step through," Ilvane said softly at my shoulder. "It offers. It doesn't take. Not unless you let it.""You say that like someone who's read about it.""Thirty years of reading." Her eyes never left the light. "Never standing."Daughter, the Hunger said. My sister is here. She is afraid too.I stopped with my toes at the edge of the glow. The stone floor ended there. Beyond it was no room, only a pale, wall-less place like the inside of a shell, and in the middle of it two shapes hung in the air like breath on a cold morning. One dark. One bright. They didn't touch. They leaned."There you are," I whispered. The bright one turned, and the Sister Spire's voice came small and cracked.Stranger. Mother of the bridge. You came to the door."I came

Constance"Explain," William said. "Fast."Tamsin didn't look away from the carved spiral. "Two arms, not touching. Everyone reads that as two halves kept apart. It isn't. It's a sentence with the last word missing.""Missing how?" Ysolde had her notebook out again, her hand shaking."The First Anchor carved it before she bound anything. She wasn't drawing a prison. She was drawing a question." Tamsin touched the gap between the arms. "Do you close this, or do you leave it open? The binding was her answer for her own lifetime. She never claimed it was the right one for everyone after.""And the door?""The third Anchor found it. Nine years of carrying the halves apart, and she went looking for another way. She cracked it. Just enough to look through." Tamsin's mouth tightened. "That's the second thing the Spire won't show you, because it doesn't know what she saw. Only whoever stands there does.""Then how do you know it's a choice?" I asked."Because my mother told me, and hers told

Constance"Seventh ship," Petra called from the dune. "No banner. No flag. Nothing.""Whose?" William said."Not theirs." Della was squinting at the horizon. "Ilvane's people haven't looked at it once. Look at her."I looked. Ilvane stood very still, eyes on the black sail. For the first time since she'd stepped onto the sand, she wasn't smiling. Her hands had come unfolded."You didn't plan for that," I said."I plan for everything." A muscle in her jaw disagreed. "Be at the cave mouth when the tide turns, Constance. I will be there. So will the girl.""Here's my term. She walks beside me. Not in front of a blade. Beside me, with Edric a step behind. Once I'm through the cave mouth, she goes to her father.""Absurd.""Then I don't go in."Her eyes came back to me. I held them. My heart was going so hard I thought she could hear it."Beside you," she said at last. "No blade. My people stay close enough to retrieve her.""Done."She walked back to her boats, white hair bright against t

Constance"We don't have time to go back into the cave," Della said."We don't have to go in." I was already on my feet. "The passage is flooded. But the Spire talks through the water. Through Rosalie. Through me.""Through the sea?" Ysolde said. "From a shed?""From the shoreline. Ten yards from the surf." I turned to William. "I need you to hold us. Both of us. Whatever happens, you don't let go.""I never planned to."We went out the back of the shed, down a rocky slope to a narrow strip of shingle hidden from the beach by a shoulder of cliff. The tide hissed in and out over the stones. Forty-four minutes.Rosalind knelt beside me with Rosalie. Theo stood guard with a boat hook he clearly didn't know how to use. Ysolde crouched with her notebook out, because of course she did.I put my palm flat on the wet stone and closed my eyes.*Sister,* I thought, the way the Hunger had taught me. Not a shout. An opening. *I know what you tried to tell us. I didn't know how to ask. I'm asking

ConstanceWe walked down the beach side by side, my hand in William's, twenty yards of open sand between us and sixty drawn blades.Nobody raised a weapon. That was almost worse.Rosalie was behind the net shed with Rosalind, Ysolde and two of Petra's riders. William had argued about that for exactly one breath. Then he'd looked at the girl on the ship's deck and stopped arguing. The white-haired woman waited at the waterline, hands folded. Up close she looked about forty. Her eyes were pale grey, and she hadn't blinked since we started walking."Thank you for coming," she said. "I am Ilvane.""I don't know that name.""You aren't meant to. The Serpent Mother liked to be remembered. I prefer to be useful." She nodded at William. "Alpha King. Your uncle's cell is warm, I hear. You have a gentle hand.""Let the girl go," William said."Soon.""Now.""If I wanted a fight, you'd be standing in one." Ilvane smiled slightly. "Hear me out. Then decide how angry you wish to be."I squeezed Wi

ConstanceWe hit the dune path at a dead run."Fen!" William shouted. "How far to the village?""Half a mile!" The boy was already ahead of us, bare feet kicking up sand. "There's a goat track behind the net sheds. The horses are tied there."Behind us, the first Circle ship dropped anchor in the shallows. I didn't look back. The Hunger had gone rigid behind my thoughts, and a cold, searching pressure was crawling up the beach toward me, the same wrongness I'd felt in our chamber the night the scouts came."They're sensing me," I gasped. "Ysolde, they know exactly where I am.""Then stop being easy to find." She yanked a knotted cord from her sleeve and slapped it against my chest. It stung like a nettle. "Ward-knot. Keep it against your skin.""What does it do?""Muffles your resonance. Yours only. It won't hide anyone else."We crested the last dune and the village spread out below us, nets, boats, smoke from a dozen chimneys. Aggate stood in the square with her arms folded, watchin
