Don't act

"Miss Sarah, Miss Sarah, please stop."

Sarah's step halted as soon as she heard his voice. Her husband's voice. Why was he calling her?

This time she didn't keep her back facing him. She turned around to face him, to see his face for the first time and she felt the breath getting knocked out of her lungs.

There stood a man, a few steps away from her, with a distanced face. He was wearing a black uniform suit. He was tall, maybe almost six feet. His facial features were sharp which could easily put a world-class model to shame. His sharp jaw was capable enough to cut glasses. His perfect silky black hair was styled. His stormy grey eyes were the most captivating.

He was none other than the new Son-In-Law of the Watson's, her husband. He got another identity. The driver of the family. She remembers his name from the register paper.

Elijah.

She put on a blank face after she was out of the zone she entered after seeing her husband for the first time. He is breathtakingly handsome. There is no denying there.

"Why did you stop me?" She asked in a blank tone.

"I wanted to thank you, Miss Sarah." He said while not looking at her face. She frowned a little in confusion after hearing him.

"Thank me? For what?" She asked.

"Thank you for standing up for me back in there, in front of your family, Miss Sarah." He said in a gratitude filled tone.

"Were you eavesdropping on us?" She asked with a frown and his eyes widened in record.

"No, no, no, Miss Sarah. It was never my intention. The place you were standing was close to the back door of the mansion which the workers use to enter the mansion from the servant quarter. That's where I stay and I was returning from there when I heard you guys. I didn't want to interrupt you, hence didn't come out. I am sorry if I offended you." He quickly explained himself. Sarah just nodded at him.

"Okay and you don't need to thank me. I didn't do anything for you. I just stood up to their low thoughts. That's it. It's no way connected to me or you." She said in a blank tone.

"I understand, Miss Sarah but it still means a lot to me. No one ever did that for me. Thank you." He said one last time.

She looked up at him with a little shock when she heard that no one stood up for him before. It made her feel low as she remembered her past which was a lot similar to that sentence he said. She looked away from him after a few seconds.

"You can think whatever you want to but don't expect too much from me just because I fought for you with them. Don't expect much from me or from this marriage. Do not expect love from me. This marriage was forced upon me and it has no future." She said in a hard tone which was really harsh.

He looked down after that. Everything went silent after that.

"If that's what you want, I won't expect anything from you, Miss Sarah. But can you tell me what I have to do in this marriage?" He asked in a low tone.

She felt kind of guilty that she was being too harsh on him. But she was actually saving them from the disaster that her grandmother planned out of this marriage. She put on a hard face to answer his question.

"We will act as a loving couple in front of everyone. That's what we have to do. Nothing more, nothing less. That's the rule you will have to follow. Do you understand?" She asked while looking him in the eyes. He looked back before nodding at her.

"If the marriage is so much unwanted for you, why did you even agree for it, Miss Sarah? Sorry if I am crossing my boundaries." He said while looking down.

She went blank after she remembered why she agreed for the meeting and even got married to him. It's for her father. It's for the Watson throne which her father wants. The throne for which she had a huge fight with her father when he was forcing her to get married one week and even threatened him by his weak heart.

She is one of the heirs of the Watson empire. The empire about which her father, John Watson, and his two step-siblings are so obsessed with. Everyone craves that throne and the power and privileges that come with that throne. Winning that throne is one kind of climbing Everest but here, one is willing to push you down and throw you off from the height with so much cruelty that you won't be able to get up on your feet again.

And she is in part of this race of madness, as a racer with no compassion for winning. She is doing this for her father. Even though her father got his own reason to have the target of owning that empire which she understands but everything got its limits.

There are rules after rules and mostly stupid rules which only she has to follow. Why? Because she is the daughter of the stepson of the current owner, Helena Watson, her step-grandmother who definitely doesn't want her to win.

The rules are made to make things difficult for her, to make her give up on the race because they know if the lawful rules are followed, no one but only her will be the one who wins. Helena didn't pass down the throne to her children because according to the rules made by Sarah's grandfather, only the capable one should win the throne and his lawyers would have made sure of that. She didn't raise her children well and so none of them was capable of winning that and so she raised her grandchildren according to her wish, excluding Sarah.

Among all the rules that were thrown her way from childhood, getting married was the cruelest one and the most logicless one. Helena said if she doesn't get married to the person chosen by Helena, she will be automatically out of the race. The most absurd thing in the world.

"Miss Sarah, are you okay?" Elijah asked after she went blank for a long moment which brought her back to present and she looked at him with a hard look.

"Don't act like you don't know." She said in a harsh tone before turning around to leave the place as soon as possible as it had started to suffocate her.

"I know, Miss Sarah. It's all for the throne. The power." He said to himself with a small humourless chuckle.
