Ch 7 - The Boy Doesn't Shut Up

SHAY’S POV

We left the cemetery after spending some time there. The three of us were definitely happier and the mood was lighter. It brought me joy to have gone to visit my sister’s supposed grave, and I was grateful to my best friend for suggesting it.

“Would you girls love to eat dinner out?” my dad asked.

“Sure,” we nodded.

He led us to a restaurant and we went in with everyone looking our way. It’s not often that my dad is home as I’ve mentioned, and everyone knows who he is. We were led to a table and sat down before our waiter took our orders.

“Mr M, what did you mean when you said that you guys have lost Mrs M?” Pixie asked curiously.

“She’s shut Shay out and now we’re getting divorced because she’s moving on with her life,” he explained.

“Oh my God! I’m so sorry you guys!” Pixie said sadly.

“It’s ok Pix! It’s just my daddy and I against the world now,” I smiled. He returned the smile with a wink.

“Well, it’s nice to see the duo back together,” she smiled.

“Yes it is,” my dad and I nodded.

“Shay?” a voice said out of nowhere. I looked up to find the familiar green eyes.

“Cyrus?” I asked wide-eyed. Pixie giggled, which was clearly enough for my dad to put two and two together.

“Hey Cy!” Pixie beamed.

“Hey Pix! Good evening General Montgomery,” Cyrus said politely, turning to my dad. He didn’t even look the least bit intimidated by my dad.

“Hello Cyrus whose last name I don’t know,” my dad chuckled.

“White Sir,” Cyrus supplied.

“You’re Liza and Hogan’s kid?” my dad asked.

“Yes Sir,” Cyrus smiled, clearly impressed that my dad knew that.

“Well, would you like to join us?” my dad asked.

“If it won’t be an intrusion,” Cyrus replied.

“Nonsense! Grab a seat next to Shay!” Pixie said excitedly.

Curse you Pix!

“So Cyrus, what is it that you do?” my dad asked.

“When I’m not helping my uncle down at the restaurant, I’m studying. I’m a student at the university and I’m majoring in IT and Mechanical Engineering,” Cyrus informed us.

“That’s impressive,” I commented before I could stop the words.

“Thanks!” we were blessed with the sight of Cyrus’ blush.

Aaaaw, he’s so adorable!

“And what are your intentions for my daughter?” my dad raised an intimidating eyebrow.

“DAD!” I shrieked, much to Pixie’s amusement. She was even crying from how hard she was laughing.

My dad shrugged nonchalantly. “What? I reserve the right to know.”

“Well Sir, it’s no secret that your daughter is shy and reserved so, for now, I would like the chance to be her friend,” Cyrus sweetly replied.

“Aaaaw Cy! You’re so adorable!” Pixie gushed.

“I have no problem with that. You seem like a respectable young man, so if Shay is willing to let you in, then you have my approval,” my dad smiled.

“You two are unbelievable,” I mumbled.

Cyrus smirked. “They care about you Shay.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, yeah.”

“Hey Cy? Do you have plans for the rest of the weekend?” Pixie suddenly asked.

“The rest being the rest of tonight and tomorrow right?” he asked. She nodded.

“Nah, I’ve got nothing going on. Why?” Cyrus questioned.

“Well if Mr M agrees, then you can join Shay and I’s sleepover. You can sleep in one of the guest rooms though, but at least you’ll be around us. That way, you can learn more about Shay,” Pixie suggested. I looked pleadingly to my dad, begging him not to agree.

“That sounds like a great idea!” the man instead said.

Curse these two honestly!

“I’d love to!” Cyrus beamed.

Curse him too!

“Wonderful! You can go get your stuff when we’re done here and I’ll text you the address,” Pixie said.

She and Cyrus exchanged numbers before the waiter came to take Cyrus’ order. Cyrus, Pixie, and my dad were having some sort of debate as I let my mind wander to nothingness. I literally had nothing to think about, or did I?

I did end up thinking about how I had nothing to think about, which was actually strange, but who am I to argue? I was just lost in my own thoughts as I caught a few keywords of the debate going on.

When dinner was finally over, Cyrus left for his apartment to get his stuff, while we headed home. Pixie and my dad continued their debate in the car, and I was grateful. When you spend two years being anti-social, you’re not comfortable being thrown into a social situation. I mean, I had to take this slowly. I was already allowing one more person into my life, which was strange and surprising enough on its own.

It was surprising because I already trusted Cyrus. Like, I know how they say you shouldn’t trust easily, but there are some people that you can tell straight off the bat that you could trust them with anything, and Cyrus is one of those people for me. Obviously only time would prove me right or wrong, but for now, I would believe that I’ve possibly found a friend in Cyrus.

We got to my house and went straight up to my room, with my dad turning in for the night. Cyrus arrived minutes later and we took his stuff to the guest room across my room, before setting up movies in my room. I was sandwiched between the two of them, with Cyrus on my left, and Pixie on my right.

We watched a romance first, which had poor Cyrus wanting to gorge his eyes out, before Pix and I let him choose the next movie. He wanted to choose a horror, but we threatened to kill him in his sleep, so he settled for a comedy which had us in tears from laughing so hard. It was definitely easy to be friends with Cyrus. He’s easy going and fun, but he’s also very talkative.

Good god, the boy doesn’t shut up!

“Cyrus, are you sure you’re a guy? You talk more than cheerleaders do,” I grumbled.

He scowled. “I do not!”

“You do!” both Pixie and I said.

He huffed. “You two are just mean!”

“We’re honest,” we corrected with giggles.

“Yeah, yeah! So, I know you guys are wondering why I reacted to you guys the way I did, and well, I only did that because I don’t know you guys well enough to go around judging you. It’s not my place to ‘guess’ what goes on in your lives,” he said randomly.

“Wow, if only the rest of the people in this God forsaken place thought like you,” I commented.

“I know! So, are you guys going to tell me yourselves?” he asked. We both nodded.

Pixie went first and told him everything about being popular, dating Jeff and then finding out that he cheated on her. She still cried as both Cyrus and I held her. When it was my turn, I told him about that day, what it’s been like since that day and where I stood now. He asked me to show him my eyes and I took off my contact lenses.

“That is so wicked!” he said in awe, making me giggle.

“The two of you are strange,” I smiled.

Pixie scoffed. “The two of us know beauty when we see it.”

“So, what about you Cy?” I asked him.

“I’m here, there and everywhere. Most people say I’m intelligent, and I guess I am. I like to have a fun time and make people laugh. My home life is pretty standard. I’m single and according to my best friends, I’m talkative too,” he mock glared at us.

“You are!” Pixie and I agreed.

“Whatever!” he stuck his tongue out at us.

We spent the rest of the weekend together. We played board games, watched movies, baked, had karaoke and had dance-offs; all of which my dad also participated in. By the time it was time for them to go home, we’d thoroughly had fun and we definitely knew a lot about each other. They were both supportive of my decision to leave school, even though Pixie said she would miss me.

Cyrus was definitely my best friend too by the end of the weekend.
