There was a man on his way down the stairs when we entered the house and he looked like he was in a hurry.

“Carlisle, what kind of madness is this? Coming to my house at this hour, for what? Have you finally lost it?”

I would guess that this is the Roman that Carlisle was talking about. I turned around to look at Gomez to make sure that I was right.
