Author's POV

"He gave you approval?"

Ruby looked at the sign shocked, hard to believe that Egon agreed to keep her around him.

"Why do you look so disappointed?"

Emerald raised her eyebrows at her.

"Disappointed because I don't want you to break your heart..."

Ruby sat back on her chair.

"What if things don't go as you want? What if___"

"What if he hurts me? What if he kills me? What if he takes advantage of me?"

She gasped dramatically.

"What if he breaks my heart?"

She rolled her eyes.

"You are such a scary cat... I know what I am doing, I know how to manage my feelings... If things didn't work then I'll quit. It's not that deep."

Ruby sighed, knowing Emerald doesn't know that things are deeper than she thinks. Her sister thinks it's just a random attraction but will fall deeper into it once she steps into it.

She was just worried that they would hurt each other in the process.

"Fine but don't test him too much..."

Emerald smirked.

"You leave that to me!"

Egon, on the other hand, was thinking about how to make her quit; she was so confident, and he was scared of her confidence. She was completely flattened on him and it was too obvious.

What is more difficult for him is to act like he doesn't care and doesn't want her.

His heart flutters whenever she is in front of him, and keeping a rude face at that time is difficult.

"He is dead, what should I do with the body?"

Ron asked as he killed a man in the garden.

Egon turned towards him.

"Hang it in the living room."

Ron frowned.

"Why?"

Egon smirked.

"Someone is coming... Hopefully, she won't come again after watching this!"

Ron shrugged and hung the body in the living room as he was told.

"Acting too brave, aren't we Emerald?... Let's see how brave you are!"

He went to his study expecting her to come at any time and scream her heart out.

He got busy at work and, after some time, realised that he hadn't heard about her arrival; she should be here by now. He got one more reason to fire her.

He walked out to check on her and stopped when he saw her already sitting on the couch with her laptop on her lap, doing something with focus.

He looked at the body hanging in front of her and then at her. She was sitting exactly in front of it still she was unfazed.

He sighed and rubbed his face, frustrated, realising he should know that her heart doesn't race at violence.

Emerald sensed his presence and looked up at him. Her eyes travelled on him, the rolled-up sleeves and open buttons of the shirt. He was looking sexy.

She was silently mocking his futile attempt to scare her away.

"Good morning!"

Egon watched her silently with his hands in his pockets as she got up and closed the distance between them.

"We will start working today, room by room, as you don't want the peace of the house to get disturbed... You can continue working on your study while we make your house more beautiful."

Egon was staring at those beautiful lips, struggling to control himself.

"Just make sure your extra stuff is not hanging around..."

She pointed at the body.

"I am immune to this... My team is not."

"Hmm!"

He called Ron and ordered him to dispose of the body because she wasn't scared anyway.

"Don't disturb me and everyone should leave the house before sunset..."

"I will disturb you if I want to..."

She stated, staring into those deep orbs.

"And I am changing the fragrance of this house.... The only thing which smells good in this house is you. Everything else is good for nothing."

Egon scratched his beard to hide his smile.

"Do anything you want!"

He turned around to leave.

"By the way, so creative of you to think that dead body would scare me away."

She teased and he halted in his place.

"You are delusional if you think that I am doing things for you and your presence anyhow affects me!"

He mocked.

"You can do better in your life!"

He walked away and locked himself in his office.

Emerald smiled naughtily.

"I can do many things, including pissing you off."

She wants to test his grumpiness, how long he can go without lashing out.

She got busy with her work, supervising the team that was working. She was occasionally thinking about Egon, well it was quite hard to focus on work when he was in the same house.

She didn't know that Egon was in the same situation; in fact, he was watching her the whole time on his screen.

Zooming in and admiring those glossy lips, diving into those deep Emerald orbs and those beautiful expressions of her delicate face, she had him hooked without even realising it.

She wanted to see him so she went to his office. Egon switched off this screen as soon as he saw her coming towards his office. He acted like he was busy when she knocked and entered.

She stood in front of her table and leaned closer making him frown in disapproval.

"Does my presence in any way affect you?"

She questioned.

He shook his head.

"Not at all!"

"Do I distract you?"

She questioned again.

He frowned but shook his head.

"No!"

She grinned.

"Good, then I'll sit here to finish my work... It's too noisy outside!"

Egon looked at her shocked, as she grabbed her laptop and climbed on the couch.

"Excuse me!"

She blinked at him innocently.

"Do I bother you, Mr Grumpy? It means you pay attention to me!"

Egon groaned, realising she had again tangled him in her words. He didn't say anything because she wanted him to say something. He just watched her take over his office.

She was sitting in front of him like a deer in front of a wolf. He was holding himself back from pouncing on her, leashing his monster was too hard after so long.

Emerald noticed him getting up from his couch and walking towards her. She looked up when he approached her, curious to know what he was thinking.

  • Ashes Between Us!   89. Survivors!

Author's POV Egon held her like a man who had been starving for years and finally had something warm in his arms again. His arms tightened around her lazy morning frame, almost too tightly, as if she might dissolve into thin air the second he loosened his grip.“To be honest,” his voice came out low, a confession dragged straight from the center of his chest, “I thought you would never accept me again.”His thumb brushed her waist in slow circles — a habit he developed long before, one that never truly died.“I still don’t feel deserving of you,” he admitted, the words cracking slightly, “even though I’m selfish enough to not let you go.”Emerald’s answer came not through words at first, but through the way she burrowed even closer, nuzzling into the warmth of him like she was trying to sink into his bones. There was no fear, no hesitation — just a quiet, hungry comfort she had missed far more than she had expected.“I was in the same dilemma,” she murmured. She tilted her head to me

  • Ashes Between Us!   88. Twisted Memories!

Author's POV Rafael had been too calm-too smug-when he asked her, "Are you ready to meet the real you?"There was something hidden behind that tone... something sharp, something calculated. Emerald should have protested. She should have pushed back. But at that moment, she was willing to walk into fire if it meant finding out who she really was.Rafael placed a naked sword on the table.A heavy, gleaming blade with a history soaked into its metal."Seen one of these before?" he asked, eyes gleaming with mischief. "Wanna touch?"Emerald's brows pulled together. She knew that question wasn't innocent. Nothing Rafael did was ever innocent. But the curiosity inside her was louder than the warning bells. She stepped forward and traced a finger along the blade-slowly, thoughtfully. She couldn't imagine the things Rafael had used this sword for.She wasn't sure she wanted to imagine."Ohh... who do we have here?"The voice behind her made her turn sharply.Another man stood there. Strikingl

  • Ashes Between Us!   87. The Love!

Author's POV The ocean was about to witness their reunion again.Egon’s lips crashed onto hers with a hunger that had been rotting in his chest for far too long. It wasn’t a kiss — it was a claim, a scream, a desperate pull of two halves that had been cut apart and finally slammed back together. Emerald clutched his shirt with trembling fingers, dragging him impossibly closer, like she wanted to pull him under her skin.He groaned into her mouth, a raw, broken sound that betrayed every night he spent missing her. His body pressed into hers as the waves curled around them, cool on their skin, nothing compared to the heat rising between them. Her hands cupped his jaw, fingers shaking as they memorised him again — the stubble, the sharp lines, the warmth that had once been her home.“Egon…” she whispered against his lips, breath trembling. He closed his eyes like her voice hurt him. “Say it again,” he murmured, forehead resting on hers. “I’ve forgotten how to breathe without it.”She di

  • Ashes Between Us!   86. She is back!

Author's POV Egon had abandoned the island castle long ago. Every stone, every hallway, every echo of that place carried the weight of what had been done to them—every wound they endured, every injustice that had carved itself into their story. Without Emerald beside him, the castle had become a living ghost, suffocating him with memories he wasn’t strong enough to face.So he had walked away.Yet today, he stood in front of it again. The familiar walls stared back at him like they recognised him—like they remembered the man who once ruled them. And standing there now, the past scraped against his heart like broken glass, burning through the thin layer of hope he was clinging to.Emerald wanted to talk. But she wanted to talk here.In front of the castle that had shaped everything between them.He didn’t understand what she had in mind, and that uncertainty was eating him alive. His hope had been dying since last night.
