Author's POV

Emerald watched him as he stared at her with a heavy heart.

"We will talk about that too. Let me deal with Ara first."

There was a hope in her heart that he would let her go, she had opened the door of her freedom, but she couldn't trust him. Not until he actually let her go.

He knows how to manipulate the situation in his favour.

But she decided to stay back for some time because he was still processing the matter of his sister.

Arabella took a seat on the couch.

Egon sat in front of her, he was already looking like a stressed brother whose sister had fallen for a street-side Romeo.

"They purchased you in an auction!"

He was mad.

"Because I was sold as a slave, that's what my life was."

She replied bluntly.

Egon clenched his jaw.

"I dare you to say that word in front of me again."

"I know how to deal with them."

She tried to calm him down.

"Of course you can but they are not worthy of you."

He shook his head.

"Look at you, they sent you here alone. Don't have the guts to face me or what?"

"I work for them, it's my job... You would have done the same..."

She sighed.

"Egon, this is why I was not coming in front of you... I know you are worried but it's my problem and I know how to deal with it... Knights are angry with me but they care about me, they love me."

"I bet they didn't lock you in the basement."

Emerald passed the comment while sitting at the corner of the couch.

Arabella looked at her confused.

"There is no basement which can hold me captive..."

"Emerald, go back to the room."

Egon warned her.

"Not until I get my answer."

She sat there stubbornly.

"Your sister is alive, now you have to let mine go. And don't forget the promise!'

Egon ignored her and turned towards Arabella.

"How are you so sure that they care about you?"

He mocked.

"Renzo was a little sane, but Rancho is a motherfucker, do you think he will let them take you... You are a treasure to him, you are earning money for him. He will kill knights if you challenge him and I don't think Knights are capable enough to face him."

Arabella didn't like him demeaning them.

"Then you help me to kill Rancho..."

He scoffed.

"I am here to take you away from the Knights."

"What if I prove that they care about me and can even come here to protect me?"

She challenged.

"Cowards don't do that."

He shook his head.

"What if?"

She asked confidently.

"I'll help you to kill Rancho."

He promised.

"But they can have you only when Rancho is dead... I don't want you to get widowed."

She got up with a heavy sigh.

"You are too rude... I'll show you how much they love me."

Egon checked the cameras on his island and saw the Knight brothers in his territory.

"I'll see how much they love you."

He led Arabella to his twin island.

He wanted to see how dedicated these two men are towards his sister.

When they were close, he buried Arabella alive in the ground. Arabella agreed to do that.

He watched as two big men searched for her like lost kids.

They were going crazy without her just like he goes crazy when Emerald is not around.

As promised, Arabella proved that her men love her and Egon saw it. He didn't want to admit it, but they were in love with her and weren't hurting her like he had hurt Emerald.

He went back, leaving his sister behind. It was too late to separate her from them. Now he can just stay back and protect her from afar.

At least he was going back with the feeling that he had a family.

He entered, and Emerald got up from the couch. She didn't move from there until he came back. She was waiting for him.

"Egon___"

Her eyes were hopeful.

Egon rubbed his face tiredly.

"Not now, Emerald..."

He was not prepared for this conversation. So many things came at once, and he was still processing it.

Her face fell as he started walking away.

"But you promised..."

She said and he halted in his place.

"Your sister is back... As per the deal, you have to let me go. You can't deny that."

He didn't reply to that, he just picked her up and carried her to his room. Emerald frowned at him as he tossed her on the bed and started taking off his shirt.

She flinched back when he got on the bed but instead of touching her, he pulled her closer and closed his eyes.

She watched him, not understanding what was happening to him. He looked defeated.

"Egon?"

She touched his arm.

"Go to sleep, Emerald... We will talk in the morning."

He mumbled tiredly.

She looked at the wall clock and waited for the time to pass. Egon noticed her awake.

He turned her towards him, in his arms and covered them with a bedsheet.

"Sleep!

He placed her head on his chest.

Emerald sighed and closed her eyes, realising he was not going to entertain her tonight.

A silent tear escaped her eyes as she hugged him and fell asleep.

Egon was the first one to wake up in the morning, he watched her sleeping peacefully in his arms like a baby. There was a time when he had a dream to wake up like this every day.

He knew that this time would come, when he had to let her go, but he was not ready for it.

It has become a habit to see her face every day.

He leaned forward and kissed her head.

"You are not going anywhere."

He has one more option to hold her back.

Egon kept admiring her while she tossed, turned and hugged him in sleep.

Her eyes finally opened lazily and she saw him staring down at her.

She smiled, her hand reached to touch his face, but then she snapped back into reality. For a minute she forgot that they are not lovers anymore.

She quickly sat up and looked at him.

"I know what you are going to ask."

Egon said before her.

"But I have something to show you after that you can decide if you want to leave or not."

His mischievous smirk told her that he had something evil in his mind.

"What?"

She grew worried.

He grabbed her arm and led her out to the living room.

Emerald was confused until she saw who was standing in the living room. Her blood ran cold, and the ground beneath her feet felt like slipping away.

She could feel her heart racing and mind going foggy.

"I found what you were hiding!"

Egon smirked.

  • Ashes Between Us!   89. Survivors!

Author's POV Egon held her like a man who had been starving for years and finally had something warm in his arms again. His arms tightened around her lazy morning frame, almost too tightly, as if she might dissolve into thin air the second he loosened his grip.“To be honest,” his voice came out low, a confession dragged straight from the center of his chest, “I thought you would never accept me again.”His thumb brushed her waist in slow circles — a habit he developed long before, one that never truly died.“I still don’t feel deserving of you,” he admitted, the words cracking slightly, “even though I’m selfish enough to not let you go.”Emerald’s answer came not through words at first, but through the way she burrowed even closer, nuzzling into the warmth of him like she was trying to sink into his bones. There was no fear, no hesitation — just a quiet, hungry comfort she had missed far more than she had expected.“I was in the same dilemma,” she murmured. She tilted her head to me

  • Ashes Between Us!   88. Twisted Memories!

Author's POV Rafael had been too calm-too smug-when he asked her, "Are you ready to meet the real you?"There was something hidden behind that tone... something sharp, something calculated. Emerald should have protested. She should have pushed back. But at that moment, she was willing to walk into fire if it meant finding out who she really was.Rafael placed a naked sword on the table.A heavy, gleaming blade with a history soaked into its metal."Seen one of these before?" he asked, eyes gleaming with mischief. "Wanna touch?"Emerald's brows pulled together. She knew that question wasn't innocent. Nothing Rafael did was ever innocent. But the curiosity inside her was louder than the warning bells. She stepped forward and traced a finger along the blade-slowly, thoughtfully. She couldn't imagine the things Rafael had used this sword for.She wasn't sure she wanted to imagine."Ohh... who do we have here?"The voice behind her made her turn sharply.Another man stood there. Strikingl

  • Ashes Between Us!   87. The Love!

Author's POV The ocean was about to witness their reunion again.Egon’s lips crashed onto hers with a hunger that had been rotting in his chest for far too long. It wasn’t a kiss — it was a claim, a scream, a desperate pull of two halves that had been cut apart and finally slammed back together. Emerald clutched his shirt with trembling fingers, dragging him impossibly closer, like she wanted to pull him under her skin.He groaned into her mouth, a raw, broken sound that betrayed every night he spent missing her. His body pressed into hers as the waves curled around them, cool on their skin, nothing compared to the heat rising between them. Her hands cupped his jaw, fingers shaking as they memorised him again — the stubble, the sharp lines, the warmth that had once been her home.“Egon…” she whispered against his lips, breath trembling. He closed his eyes like her voice hurt him. “Say it again,” he murmured, forehead resting on hers. “I’ve forgotten how to breathe without it.”She di
