The days at the villa settled into a rhythm that felt, at times, dangerously close to peace. Eve woke each morning to soft light through the curtains and, more often than not, a single rose left on the pillow beside her along with a note in Alex's handwriting — a meeting running long, a promise to be back by midday, three words that always undid her a little more than she wanted to admit. Giuseppe kept breakfast waiting on the terrace like clockwork. Lila had stopped using her real name entirely, even in private, and something like genuine friendship had begun to grow in the space where suspicion used to live. Mornings became walks along the shore. Afternoons became painting, or reading, or another easy outing into town with Isabella and Francesca, more small gifts collected along the way — a watch for Alex, a leather notebook he took to almost immediately, jotting ideas on the terrace while she sketched the water beside him.

It would have been easy, in another life, to call these days simply happy.

One afternoon, Luca found her on the terrace with his usual grin firmly in place. "Boss is in good spirits today, signora. Mentioned wanting to take you out on the yacht this weekend — a private dinner under the stars. He's planning it himself, which almost never happens. Usually that's my job."

Eve felt the warmth climb into her cheeks. "That sounds wonderful. Thank you for telling me, Luca."

Alex made good on it a few evenings later. He came for her just as the sun dropped behind the hills, dressed simply but with an energy she rarely saw outside of boardrooms, and led her down to the private dock where the yacht waited, lit soft and gold against the darkening water. They sailed out until the villa's lights were just a smear on the shoreline, and ate on deck under more stars than she'd ever seen at once, and talked — about nothing important, mostly, which was its own kind of luxury.

"This is what I want for us," he said at one point, his hand finding hers across the small table. "Nights like this. No running from anything. I'm making certain the Russians, and anyone else circling this family, learn to stay far away." His thumb moved slow over her knuckles. "You're safe with me, Sophia."

"I feel safe with you," she said, and meant it more than she'd meant almost anything since the day she'd first stepped into this lie. "More than I ever thought I'd let myself feel again."

He kissed her then, unhurried, the lake black and silent all around them, and for a few hours she let herself believe entirely in the life this night was offering — a woman who belonged to a man who adored her, with nothing more complicated waiting back at shore than a warm bed and a quiet morning.

The illusion didn't survive the trip home.

A message waited on her hidden phone the moment they docked — the woman tied to Sophia, brief and cold. She's watching. Don't get too comfortable, Evelyn. This isn't over.

Eve deleted it with hands that had gone unsteady, the warmth from the evening curdling fast into something colder. Lila noticed the shift in her the next day, during their walk along the shore.

"Something wrong?" she asked quietly, no accusation in it, just concern worn plain on her face.

"Just another reminder from the past." Eve kept her voice even. "I'm handling it."

Lila studied her a moment, then nodded, accepting it for now. "You know where to find me if that changes. We're protecting him together — remember that."

The days kept unfolding after that in their same deceptive rhythm — shopping trips, garden walks, quiet evenings with Alex that felt more real with every one that passed, the lies growing heavier even as the love underneath them somehow grew more true. Giuseppe remained his steady, watchful self. Luca kept the mood light with easy jokes and easier company. The villa had, against every reasonable expectation, begun to feel like something close to home.

Then, one evening not long after the yacht, as they climbed the steps back toward the house from another quiet dinner by the water, a final message arrived — Marcus, this time, and there was nothing playful left in it.

Your time's almost up. She's ready. The next package won't be stopped.

Eve deleted it, heart hammering hard enough to hurt, the lake behind her suddenly looking less like calm water and more like something holding its breath. Lila knew the truth now and was doing what she could to help hold the walls up. But Alex still had no idea how close the whole structure had come to collapsing — no idea how many quiet, unseen hands had already been at work keeping the worst of it from ever reaching him at all.

The water stayed still and silver under the moon that night, the villa glowing warm behind her. But Eve stood at the railing long after everyone else had gone to bed, certain, in a way she couldn't quite explain, that whatever was coming next wouldn't be stopped as easily as everything that had come before it.

Late morning sun filtered through the tree canopy lining the quiet street near the art center. Eve walked at an easy pace, tote bag over one shoulder, fresh sketch pads and a small set of watercolors packed inside for the next children's class. Jasmine drifted from someone's garden, mixed with the smell of rain drying off warm pavement. It was a route she'd walked dozens of times since coming home — familiar enough to feel safe, open enough that she could still stay alert without it costing her any peace. Her friends had been steady through all of it. Aria had walked her partway that morning before heading to the shop, a quick hug and a reminder to text once she reached the center. Mia had dropped off new supplies the night before, eyes still wide every time Eve mentioned another fragment surfacing from the dreams. Ryan had checked the new cameras that morning, shaking his head. "You handled seven guys like it was nothing, Eve. And now these memories on top of it — I'm still catching

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Forty-four: Grey-Eyed Command

The underground hall beneath the old Milan industrial complex ran with the precision of a well-oiled machine. Reinforced concrete lined with steel panels swallowed sound as thoroughly as it swallowed scrutiny. Overhead LED arrays cast even, unforgiving light across a long mahogany table set in a precise rectangle. Armed guards in tailored black suits stood motionless at every reinforced entrance, earpieces linked to a closed-loop system scanning constantly for anomalies in temperature, movement, signal. Biometric locks, retinal scanners, and rotating passcodes kept this level sealed off from everyone outside the innermost circle.Valentino Voss entered through the private side door at exactly 22:00. His black three-piece suit was immaculate, faint gold threading at the lapels catching the light with every measured step. A matte carbon-fiber mask covered the upper half of his face, molded precisely to his features, leaving only a sharp jaw, a firm mouth, and a pair of pale grey eyes vi

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Forty-Three: Golden Days

The Italian sun rose over Lake Como with its familiar gentle warmth, painting the villa's terraces in soft pink and gold. Alex stood on the master suite balcony, espresso in hand, breathing in air scented with roses and lake water. For the first time in weeks, the knot that had been tightening steadily in his chest began, unexpectedly, to loosen. He'd spent too many nights lately turning over old files, chasing shadows that only ever brought unease and never quite brought proof. Sophia was here. Alive. His. The empire was thriving, the fire long behind them. He was tired of the tension he'd been imposing on both of them. Today, he decided, would simply be normal.Behind him, Sophia stirred beneath the silk sheets, stretching languid and unhurried before sitting up, dark hair spilling over one shoulder. "You're up early, amore. Come back to bed a while."He set the cup down and crossed to her, pulling her into a kiss that stayed slow rather than urgent, their bodies moving together wit

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Forty-two: Shadows in the Barrel

The days after the attack settled into a careful new rhythm. Eve threw herself into the art center with a focus sharpened rather than shaken, guiding students through color theory and perspective while keeping a quiet, practiced eye on every entrance. The security Ryan had installed — discreet cameras at the door, a panic button wired straight to Aria's phone — offered some comfort. It did nothing to quiet the memories still surfacing at the edges of her mind, fragments of a past she'd buried so deep she'd almost convinced herself it belonged to somebody else.Evenings still belonged to her friends. Mia turned the apartment into an impromptu studio some nights, sketch pads and markers spread across every surface. Ryan showed up with takeout and tools, reinforcing window locks between easy stories from the job site. Aria stayed close, often crashing on the couch with a casual "just in case" that both of them understood by now wasn't really casual at all.But the nights belonged to the

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Forty-one: The Forgotten Forge

Late afternoon light wrapped the community art center in a warm, golden haze. Eve moved between easels with the quiet confidence that had become second nature to her lately, voice gentle as she guided a cluster of enthusiastic students through a stormy-sky exercise. "Let the colors tell the story," she told a shy teenager wrestling with too much grey. "Don't chase perfect. Just feel it." Laughter and the soft scrape of brushes filled the room — her favorite sound of the week, one that reminded her she could still make something beautiful without a single lie attached to it.When the session ended and parents collected their kids, Eve cleaned up slowly, savoring the quiet. The settlement money kept doing its patient work in the background — Elena's upgraded care, the rent, extra supplies for the center that let her stock real watercolor paper instead of the cheap stuff. Aria had texted that she'd meet her near the fountain after her shift. Life had started to feel almost stable: weeken

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Forty: The Weight of Memory

Morning mist still rose off the lake when Alex walked the rose garden alone, gravel quiet under his shoes. Sleep had come in fragments the night before, stitched through with half-remembered conversations from years ago — Sophia's sharp suggestions in late-night strategy sessions, the particular flicker in her eyes whenever certain accounts came up. Those old patterns had returned in full lately, layered now beneath a devoted-wife performance polished smooth enough to almost pass.He stopped at the ancient stone fountain, trailing his fingers through the cool water. The fire had taken so much — evidence, memory, the version of Sophia who'd seemed, after her return, to actually need him. Or the version he'd let himself believe was her. The woman sharing his life now moved with the same commanding grace she'd carried before the tragedy — decisive in meetings, elegant at every dinner, physically present in ways that still pulled at him despite everything. But the openness, the quiet vuln

  • Ashes Of Desire     Chapter 4: Cracks in the Facade

Eve woke tangled in sheets that didn’t belong to her, the unfamiliar softness cocooning her limbs. The morning sun, bold and intrusive, leaked through gauzy curtains, painting the room in gold. For a moment, she floated in that liminal space between sleep and waking, lost to time and place. This wa

Eve struggled to breathe. It wasn’t because Alex was holding her too tight—though he definitely was. Every second in his arms chipped away at the walls she’d spent years building. He looked just like the photos, just like Sophia had always described. Tall. Broad shoulders. The scent of his cologne,

Alexander Voss stood at the windows of his penthouse, gazing down at Manhattan’s sprawl. The city didn’t care if he was watching or not. It just kept going, the same as always.
