The red emergency strobe turned the stainless-steel walls of the sub-level corridor into a flashing chamber of blood and shadow. The screeching siren echoed off the bedrock, vibrating straight through the soles of Maya's boots.

Julian didn't hesitate. With one hand gripping his sidearm, his other arm wrapped securely around Maya's waist, yanking her hard against his side as he pivoted away from the closing door of Vault 3.

"Keep your head down," Julian ordered, his baritone voice cutting cleanly through the screeching alarm.

They sprinted down the narrow corridor toward the main security stairwell, the sound of heavy combat boots clattering against the metal grates echoing from above. The automated lockdown protocols had sealed the heavy blast doors at either end of the hall, trapping them in the central junction between Sector 2 and the core archive vaults.

"We're cut off," Maya said, her breathing steady despite the chaos. Her mind raced, calculating angles and escape routes. "The main blast doors are locked on a hard circuit. Standard keycards won't override it."

Julian shoved her behind a thick concrete support pillar just as a volley of suppressed gunfire pinged off the metal wall above them, sending a shower of sparks raining down onto the floor.

The scent of burnt gunpowder instantly cut through the clean scent of his pine and cedar.

Julian didn't flinch. He leaned around the edge of the pillar, raised his sidearm, and fired two precise shots up toward the upper catwalk. A muffled grunt echoed from above, followed by the heavy thud of a body dropping against the metal stairs.

"They aren't pack guards," Julian muttered, his jaw clenching as a dark, lethal rage flickered across his face. "Pack security uses standard-issue pulses. Those were silenced rounds. Someone brought mercenaries into my estate."

Maya peeked around the side of the pillar. Through the flashing red strobe lights, a dark figure in tactical gear dropped from the upper catwalk, landing smoothly on the lower level just twenty feet away. The intruder raised a rifle, aiming directly at the pillar where they stood.

Before the mercenary could pull the trigger, Julian moved with terrifying, non-human speed. He lunged out from behind cover, closing the distance in a fraction of a second. He slammed the butt of his weapon into the intruder's chest with bone-crushing force, sending the man flying backward into the steel wall before he crumpled unconscious to the floor.

Julian stood over him, breathing heavily, his golden eyes glowing faintly in the dim emergency light. He turned his head slowly, looking back at Maya where she stood pressed against the concrete.

"You didn't flinch when the shots went off," Julian noted, his voice dangerously low as he stepped back toward her. He pinned her in place with a look that stripped away every layer of her fragile persona. "Most women would be screaming or paralyzed with fear. You look like you're ready to pick up that fallen rifle."

Maya swallowed hard, forcing her expression to soften just enough to look up at him with wide, uncertain eyes. "Fear doesn't keep you alive when someone is trying to kill you, Alpha. You taught me that yourself."

Julian stared at her for a long, heavy moment. The air between them grew thick, charged with an intensity that had nothing to do with the alarms blaring overhead or the unconscious mercenary bleeding on the floor.

He reached out, his long, calloused fingers wrapping around her chin, tilting her face up so she had no choice but to meet his piercing gaze. His thumb brushed over her lower lip, his touch heavy and possessive.

"Who are you really, Maya?" Julian whispered, his face inches from hers. "Because beneath that delicate skin and the frightened bride act, you have the instincts of a soldier."

"I'm whoever you forced me to be when you brought me into this pack," Maya replied evenly, her heart hammering against her ribs as his thumb grazed her skin.

Before Julian could answer, the red strobe lights cut out, replaced by the steady, yellow glow of backup generator power. The piercing siren wound down into a low, mechanical hum.

A sharp, digital chime echoed from the main corridor overhead as the heavy blast doors slowly began to retract.

Footsteps rushed down the hall—this time followed by the recognizable flashlights and shouted orders of the true Bloodmoon Pack security detail, led by the second-in-command.

"Alpha!" a breathless voice shouted as armed guards flooded the junction, freezing when they saw Julian and Maya standing together by the pillar.

Julian didn't look away from Maya's eyes for three full seconds after the guards arrived. Slowly, deliberately, his thumb dropped from her face, and he stepped back, raising his voice so the entire security team could hear.

"Secure the lower level," Julian commanded, his tone instantly shifting back to absolute, unyielding authority. "Sweep the perimeter and find out who let unauthorized mercenaries past the outer gates."

"And the intruder, Alpha?" the head guard asked, pointing at the unconscious tactical operative on the floor.

"Bring him to the sub-level holding cells," Julian replied coldly, his golden eyes flashing with a dark promise of violence. "I want to know who gave him my access codes."

Julian turned back to Maya, offering a single hand to help her step out from behind the concrete pillar. As her fingers slipped into his warm, firm grasp, he leaned down close to her ear.

"We aren't finished talking about what you found in that vault, Maya," he murmured quietly. "Not by a long shot."

  • Ashes Of Desire   The Public Mask

The morning sun cast a sharp, golden glare across the central courtyard of the Bloodmoon Estate. By 9:00 AM, the courtyard was a hive of activity, buzzing with pack members, couriers, and low-ranking elders murmuring among themselves about the security lockdown from the previous night. Maya stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror in her dressing room, smoothing down the fabric of a deep emerald silk dress that hugged her frame with quiet elegance. Her hair was swept up into an intricate, polished braid, giving her the exact appearance of a high-ranking Luna stepping out into the public eye. The door to her suite swung open without a knock. Julian stepped inside, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that accented his broad shoulders and commanding stature. His golden eyes swept over her, lingering for a fraction of a second on her face before a slow, approving smirk touched the corner of his lips. "You clean up well for an alleged intruder," Julian mocked softly, closing the door b

  • Ashes Of Desire   Shadow In The East Wing

The heavy oak door of Maya's suite clicked shut behind her, sealing her off from the glaring fluorescent lights and heavy boots of the security detail. She leaned back against the wood, letting out a long, shuddering breath that she had been holding since the alarms blared in the vault. Her fingers were still tingling from the residual heat of Julian’s touch. The man was a walking contradiction—a ruthless Alpha who commanded fear, yet possessed the sharp intellect to realize his own signature had been forged. If Torin forged that execution order, Maya thought, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window to stare out into the black expanse of the northern forest, then the entire war three years ago was built on a lie. A faint rustle of gravel outside her window snapped her out of her thoughts. Maya froze. Her room was on the second floor of the East Wing—a height that no normal human could reach without climbing equipment. Yet, pressed against the exterior glass panel, a dark

  • Ashes Of Desire   Into the Archives

The sub-level corridor beneath the Bloodmoon Estate was carved directly into the mountain's bedrock. The air was crisp, smelling faintly of ozone, damp stone, and old parchment. Overhead, strip lights hummed with a low, modern vibration, casting stark white beams across the stainless-steel doors lining the hall. Maya walked half a step behind Julian, her eyes scanning every security camera and biometric scanner they passed. "You're quiet," Julian noted without looking back. He wore a simple dark shirt and trousers, the keycard held securely in his right hand. "I'm observing," Maya replied smoothly. "You brought me to the place you strictly forbade me from visiting twelve hours ago. I'm waiting to see where the trap is." Julian stopped in front of a heavy reinforced steel door marked VAULT 3: HISTORICAL & TERRITORIAL RECORDS. He turned slowly, his golden eyes fixing on her face with quiet intensity. "There is no trap, Maya," he said softly. "You wanted answers about the eastern fi

  • Ashes Of Desire   Cornered In The Den

Maya didn't back away. Turning to run would only confirm her guilt and trigger his predator instincts, making him hunt her down before she reached the hallway. Instead, she straightened her spine and met his golden gaze head-on."You knew I would come," Maya said, her voice dropping its soft, timid edge entirely.Julian’s lips curved into a sharp, dangerous smile. He closed the distance between them with slow, deliberate strides until he was standing right in front of her. The heat off his chest radiated through his open robe, and the rich scent of cedar and pine filled the small space between them."I suspected," Julian purred, tossing the biometric keycard onto the desk behind him with a dull clatter. "You play the fragile, broken bride well enough for the council, Maya. But your eyes... your eyes are always calculating. You look at my pack house not as a home, but as a target."He reached out, his long fingers cupping the back of her neck. His grip was firm, holding her in place wh

Maya didn't flinch. She kept her palm closed around the tiny note, forcing her pulse to slow as Julian’s hand rested heavily against the side of her neck. His skin was warm, radiating that intense, magnetic Alpha energy that threatened to disrupt her focus."I’m not hiding anything, Julian," Maya said softly, tilting her head slightly into his touch—a calculated move of artificial submission that made his golden eyes darken. "It’s just overwhelming. The noise, the stares... Elder Torin's words."Julian’s thumb stroked the line of her jaw, his gaze dropping to her mouth before searching her eyes. For a second, the cold, dangerous Alpha softened, replaced by something far more complex and dangerous: genuine curiosity."Torin is a relic of a dying era," Julian murmured, his voice dropping so low only she could hear over the swelling violin music across the hall. "He thinks strength is measured in bodies and burned land. He forgets who actually commands this pack.""And who commands it?"
