Chapter 1

Author: Echo
The Alpha who swore a life-and-death bond with me betrayed me, and now his pregnant little mistress is here to rub it in my face.

I let out a cold laugh and tossed the mate bond dissolution papers on the desk. "Sign it, or die."

"Do you know how deep his mark on me is?"

I looked up to see a young human girl standing in my office doorway. Her hand was caressing her neck, right over a fresh bite mark.

"He said you're too cold." She walked in, closing the door behind her. "Kaelen said being with you is like hugging a block of ice."

My hands froze over my keyboard. The girl couldn't have been more than nineteen. Blonde, blue-eyed, with a small, yet noticeable baby bump.

"What else did he say?"

She smiled and pulled a tablet from her purse. "Why don't you see for yourself?"

A video started to play. Kaelen’s face filled the screen, his eyes holding a tenderness he’d never once shown me.

"Sera," he whispered in the video, "I'll protect you. I won't let anyone hurt you. Not even my Luna."

My blood ran cold.

Those words—those exact words—he had said them to me thirteen years ago. When he saved me from his father, when he swore to the Moon Goddess that he would always protect me.

"That's enough," I said, standing up.

"It's not over," Seraphina said, letting the video play. On screen, Kaelen's hand was gently rubbing her belly. "My child will be the heir to this pack."

I started toward her, but before I could make a move, she threw herself backward, clutching her stomach and groaning. "Ah! What—what are you doing to me?"

I saw it clearly. It was a soft fall. She wouldn't be hurt at all.

Just then, the office door was kicked open.

Kaelen stormed in. The moment he saw Seraphina on the floor, his face twisted with rage.

"What the hell are you doing, Elara?" His voice was a low threat.

Behind him, Seraphina shot me a triumphant smirk.

Such a pathetic setup, and Kaelen fell for it.

I forced back the pain in my chest and gave him a twisted smile. "Hurts to see her like this? What about what comes next?"

If Seraphina wanted to claim I attacked her, I might as well make it true.

My claws shot out, and I lunged for her.

Kaelen yanked her back, but he wasn't fast enough. My claws raked across her shoulder, leaving deep gashes that soaked her white dress in blood.

"Are you insane?!" Kaelen yelled, pressing his hand to her wound. His eyes were filled with shock and disappointment. "She's pregnant! How can you be so heartless?"

He turned to check Seraphina’s injury, his gentle touch making me want to vomit.

"You dare mention that child?" I sneered. "Kaelen, have you forgotten our vow?"

I turned away, sick of the sight, and pulled a document from my desk drawer, throwing it at his feet.

"These are rejection papers. You chose her. Sign them."

The color drained from Kaelen's face. He stood up, the papers trembling in his hand.

"Our bond was blessed by the Goddess herself!" he roared. "I will never reject you! Not until the day I die!"

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Then choose. Only one of us gets to live.” I pulled a silver dagger from my belt. The blade hissed against my palm, searing my flesh.

Kaelen’s eyes widened in horror. He lunged forward and snatched the dagger from me.

He pulled me into a tight embrace. “Elara, just listen to me!”

I shoved him away. "Listen to what? How you broke our vow?"

"I'll handle it," his voice softened. "Sera and the baby—I'll make them disappear. You'll never see her again."

"Really?"

"I swear it." He grabbed my hand. "I swear on the Moon Goddess."

I stared into his eyes, searching for a lie.

I decided to give him one more chance.

"My patience is thin. You know that."

The next day, Kaelen handed me a tablet, his face unreadable.

The screen showed a GPS signal with a simple message: "Vehicle went off a cliff…"

"I put her in the car myself. Are you satisfied now?"

Looking into Kaelen's eyes, I could feel it. Something between us was changing.

His touch revolted me.I pushed Kaelen away and pressed the gun into his hand."Kill her."My voice was as calm as if I were discussing the weather. "That is my condition for forgiving you."Kaelen froze. He looked from the gun in his hand to Seraphina, who was sobbing on the floor."Elara, no… she's innocent. I'm the one who's wrong, not her. She's just a human girl, she doesn't understand any of this—"He was still defending her.Even now, he was still defending her.The last spark of hope in my heart was extinguished.I turned and walked toward the door."Let's go," I said to my warriors.I finally saw Kaelen for the selfish man he was, torn between two women. His heart had become worthless.Even if he killed Seraphina for me today, we could never go back to what we were. But just as I stepped over the threshold, a gunshot rang out behind me.I spun around to see Seraphina lying in a pool of blood. Kaelen was kneeling beside her, the gun still in his hand."She… she tried to grab th

Thinking back on it now, I let out a bitter laugh. "Kaelen, you fought him the moment he called me tainted, the moment he said I was soiled.""You already knew, didn't you?" I asked softly. "Or at least, you suspected."Kaelen shook his head frantically, trying to look innocent. "No, I had no idea…"I closed my eyes, letting the memories wash over me again.Thirteen years ago, the day the old Alpha died.Kaelen received a distress call from his father. But he just sat by my bed, unmoving. After a moment, he looked up, his eyes a mix of pain, guilt, and a strange relief I couldn't understand. "Elara, once my father is gone, we can be together. No one will ever be able to stop us…"I was shocked and deeply moved. "Kaelen, he's still your father.""That doesn't matter!" He pulled me into a crushing hug, as if trying to merge our bodies into one. "All I want is you. All I have is you."For me, Kaelen had indirectly killed his own father. So I looked into his eyes and made that fatal promis

My words plunged the hall into a stunned silence."What?" Seraphina was the first to react, shrieking, "How can you do that? You swore an oath! You swore it in the Goddess's name!""You treacherous bitch!" she pointed at me, her voice shrill with rage. "Pack oaths are sacred! You'll be cursed for breaking your vow!"Kaelen's face was livid, his eyes burning with fury. "Elara! What gives you the right to defy an oath made to the Moon Goddess? It was a life-debt! Do you have any idea what that means?""What gives me the right?" My voice began to tremble, not with fear, but with rage.He kept pressing, each accusation a silver needle in my heart. My old wounds throbbed, a burning pain shooting from under my ribs. I gritted my teeth, refusing to show my agony."You tell me what gives you the right!" Kaelen demanded. "I saved you! I gave you a place in this pack! We gave you a home! A family! And this is how you repay us?""Repay you?" I finally broke, thirteen years of buried pain and ange

A dead silence fell over the ceremony.Kaelen looked around at the warriors who had once fought and died for him. Now, their guns were all pointed at him.Thomas, Ryan, Derek… men who had followed him for over a decade. Not a trace of guilt on their faces, only cold indifference."No! No! This can't be happening!" Seraphina's shriek cut through the silence. She hid behind Kaelen, her body shaking violently.Kaelen looked at Marcus. "Why?""Tell him, Marcus," I said, my voice echoing through the hall as I ascended the stage.Marcus lowered his gun but kept his eyes locked on Kaelen. "After you became Alpha, all you cared about was your business empire and expanding your power. Do you even remember any of us, the brothers who fought to put you there?""Thomas's father was dying, and his medical bills were a million dollars. Did you know that?" I took over. "Ryan's daughter was born with a heart defect and needed surgery. Did you know that? Derek lost his right arm for you and can barely

The moment I opened the door, a silver dagger lunged for my chest.“Die!” Seraphina’s eyes were wild with hatred.Kaelen grabbed her around the waist from the side, trying to stop her. "Sera, no!""Let go of me! I want her dead!" Seraphina thrashed wildly, the dagger swinging through the air.In the struggle, the silver dagger slipped from her grasp and clattered to the floor at my feet.I bent down and picked it up.The silver seared my palm, but I didn't flinch."You want my life?" I raised the dagger, aiming it at Seraphina's heart. "Let's see if you have what it takes."Kaelen instantly moved to block her. "Elara, stop!""Get out of my way!" I sidestepped him, the dagger slicing toward Seraphina's exposed throat. But Kaelen was faster. He kicked my wrist, and the dagger went flying again. Then, a sharp crack echoed through the hallway. My cheek burned. The right side of my face went numb. He had slapped me."Stop this, Elara," Kaelen's voice was ice. "I'll agree to sever the bond."

Moonlight spilled through the floor-to-ceiling windows, stretching across the marble floor. I knelt on the balcony, applying a special herbal balm to the skin beneath my ribs—to the scars left by silver weapons thirteen years ago. They still ached. The scars always ached under the full moon, a cruel reminder of a past I fought to forget."You're still using that balm."I didn't turn around. Kaelen's footsteps were loud on the cold marble."I thought you'd forgotten that pain," he said. The anger was gone from his voice, replaced by something I couldn't quite place.I kept rubbing the balm onto my skin. The silver scars looked ghastly in the moonlight."Seraphina’s hand is badly injured. The healers say she may never use that hand again."He added, "That was cruel, Elara."I stopped, setting the jar down before rising to face him. "Cruel?""She's just a nineteen-year-old girl!""She had a memory crystal of my greatest shame!" My voice started to shake. "Those images, Kaelen! Those damn
