Chapter 1

Author: Mellona
As the words left my mouth, I felt a dull, tearing ache deep in my soul.

It was the physical backlash from forcibly severing a mate bond.

But the pain in my body was nothing next to the agony tearing through my heart.

I wasn’t just breaking a bond. I was cutting away more than ten years of love and dreams.

Elias’s tall frame lurched. The color drained from his face, and his hand flew to his chest.

“Chloe, what the hell is wrong with you?”

He set his champagne glass down on the bar.

“Since you heard it all, there’s no point hiding it.

“Mia’s an ordinary werewolf whose wolf hasn’t even awakened yet. She can’t handle the cold up north.

“But you’re strong. Even alone on the border, you’ll do just fine.”

My eyes swept over the forged border transfer orders on the coffee table. My voice was calm. “So to protect her, you all forged the transfer orders together?”

Elias admitted it without blinking. “It was my idea.

“If we hadn’t forged the orders, you never would have signed that blood oath.”

Her eyes red, Mia suddenly grabbed for the communicator in Holden’s hand.

“This is all my fault. I’ll withdraw the request from the Elder Council right now. I’ll go north instead of Chloe...”

The two men immediately closed in around her protectively.

Holden snatched the communicator away, frowning as he snapped, “Going north would kill you!”

“But what about Chloe?” Mia cried, her slight frame trembling. “She’ll be all alone out on those faraway ice fields. She’ll be so miserable.”

Elias pulled out a tissue and tenderly wiped away her tears.

He used to be that gentle with me. Now all his tenderness was for someone else.

It wasn’t that they didn’t know how harsh life in the north was. It just didn’t matter, as long as Mia wasn’t the one who had to suffer.

“She’s been independent since she was a kid, and her wolf is strong enough. She’ll be fine anywhere. Don’t risk your life to prove a point.”

I stood across from them and watched it all.

So that was all there was to it.

Mia could go north. They just couldn’t bear the thought of her suffering there, but they had no problem sacrificing me.

My fingertips trembled slightly, and the last of my hope died.

Holden adjusted his silver-rimmed glasses and spoke calmly. “Chloe, look at it this way. Everyone wins. The Far North Line is the best place for you to train, and we get to stay in Central City to protect Mia. Nobody’s future suffers.”

I was so angry I laughed. “By that logic, I should be thanking you?”

Holden’s face darkened. “Haven’t you always wanted to go north and see real combat? We just helped you make up your mind.”

I did want to go. I’d wanted to study and train there for a long time.

Whenever other wolves bullied me, Elias and Holden stood in front of me and took all the abuse for me.

When I hit a wall in training and frustration ate away at me, they patiently helped me work through it, bit by bit. They stuck with me through the hardest stretches.

Every holiday, they remembered what I liked and showed up with gifts they’d picked out. They cared about me.

All those little acts of kindness moved me time and again. Before I knew it, I’d grown attached to them.

Because of everything we’d shared, I’d turned down the border legion’s call-up twice.

I’d even been willing to be an ordinary wolf and stay in safe, comfortable Central City, just to be with them.

But there was no point saying any of that now.

I headed toward the door.

Elias grabbed my wrist without thinking. “Where are you going?”

“Back to my apartment.”

“And what about us?”

I turned back to him, my expression cold. “What do you mean, us?”

His face stiffened, and he lowered his voice. “Chloe, don’t say things you don’t mean. I agreed to the mate bond to get you to sign the blood oath, but it wasn’t all fake.

“I’ll stay with you until the full moon, and I’ll come visit you up north later.

“I’ve already made the promise you wanted.”

I gave a mocking smile. So in his eyes, swallowing his disgust to put on a show with me for a few days was some huge favor.

I didn’t need his fake affection.

I yanked off my moonstone necklace. It was the token we’d shared as kids, the one that meant “we’re in this together.”

I tossed it on the coffee table with a sharp clink.

“You want Mia to feel like one of us, don’t you? Then give her this too.”

As I left the apartment, the communicator in my pocket buzzed.

It was an encrypted message from Rowan Hale, the legion commander of the Far North Line.

“Armored escort arrives at the boundary marker in 48 hours. Please confirm whether you plan to leave the city early.”

I hit confirm without a second’s hesitation.

Going north used to be my dream. Now I’d been tricked into it.

But with no one left in Central City worth staying for, maybe heading north wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

After five years, my mandatory service contract ended.I was 23. I’d gone from the youngest recruit in the Vanguard Legion to supreme commander of the Far North Line. That same winter, packs from across the werewolf kingdom gathered for a summit in Central City.I went back as the Far North Line’s representative, leading my personal guard.Five years later, I crossed the energy barrier at the boundary marker again. New buildings now stood where I’d dropped the badge. My aide followed my gaze. “Commander, looking for something?”I looked away, my voice even. “Nothing. Just taking in the view.”On the day of the summit, every high-ranking wolf in Central City was there.Elias and Holden were sitting in the back rows.Five years had passed. Holden had lost his old swagger. Elias had gotten much thinner, with gloom and exhaustion etched deep into his face. As for Mia, I heard she’d left for another pack a year ago because she couldn’t stand being ignored. When I walked up to the main podiu

Life on the Far North Line was harsher than I’d imagined. And a lot more satisfying. My first week in camp, I followed Rowan, the legion commander, out into the storm-lashed no-man’s-land.Daytime temperatures were 40 below. At night, we had to be on constant guard against attacks by roaming rogues. The wind always carried ice and the smell of blood.A female fighter on the line handed me a piece of roasted meat.“Regret signing the blood oath?”I took a bite, swallowed the tough meat, and shook my head. “No regrets.”“Miss home?”I thought about it.“I miss what our kind is really supposed to stand for.”“Nobody else?” she asked.“There’s nobody else.”Six months later, while I was fighting off a massive night raid by a pack of rogues, my wolf evolved.I killed the rogues’ leader and nailed his fang to the trophy wall on the line. Before dawn that morning, Rowan brought out a flask of strong winter brew, clapped me on the shoulder, and laughed.“Chloe, you were born for the far north!

The next day, news that Chloe had voluntarily signed a blood oath to serve on the Far North Line spread all over Central City.It wasn’t an ordinary exile. This was the highest tier of the Elder Council’s selection process for the Vanguard Legion.Chloe was the only one of her generation in Central City to pass that brutal screening. So many others hadn’t made it out alive. The she-wolves who’d mocked Chloe in the council hall the day before went pale on the spot.Elias stopped Brianna, the she-wolf who’d drenched Chloe in dirty water, outside the training grounds.“Who knocked over the basin?” Elias’s voice was ice-cold.Brianna’s smile froze. “Elias... my hand just slipped.”Elias raised his hand, his face blank, and the full weight of his Alpha power came crashing down. Brianna screamed as it forced her to her knees, her back slick with cold sweat.“Your hand slipped?” He looked down at her. “Then kneel here until it stops slipping.”None of it made Elias feel any better. When Chloe

Frantic, Elias rushed to the Elder Council’s border dispatch center with Holden.Harlan Pierce, the dispatch officer, regarded them coldly from behind the energy barrier.“And what is your relationship to Chloe?”Elias answered without thinking. “I’m her mate.”Harlan pulled up her file on his holo-terminal, his voice flat. “The system shows that Chloe has unilaterally dissolved her mate bond. Her emergency contact field is blank.”Elias’s expression froze. He swallowed hard.“She’s just mad at me... Please, just tell me which outpost she’s been assigned to.”“Sorry. The Far North Line is top secret. I’m not authorized to tell you.”Holden slammed his palm on the counter.“We grew up together!”Harlan looked up.“Then as her friends, didn’t you know she left the city on the transport this morning?”Neither of them said a word. They hadn’t known.Earlier, while they were tearing through Chloe’s room, they hadn’t even glanced at the transfer addendum sitting on her desk. After leaving th

Once the transport entered the restricted border zone, Garrett collected my communicator.“From now on, your legion ID code is your only identification.”Garrett dropped the communicator into a shielded box. “Your previous identity and social media accounts are now suspended.”I nodded. “Understood.”I leaned back against the transport’s hard seat. I hadn’t felt this light in ten years. No more being on call all the time. No more cleaning up Holden’s messes. No more wearing myself out trying to read Elias’s moods. The quiet all around me felt safe.Meanwhile, back in Central City, Mia’s party was in full swing.Holden popped open a bottle of expensive champagne while Elias sat on the sofa, glancing at the wall clock.Five past seven that evening.Chloe still hadn’t shown up.He pulled out his communicator and sent a message. “Where are you?”An error message immediately flashed across the screen.“This contact code has been deactivated.”He stared, then frowned and sent another.“Chloe

A black armored transport stood at the end of the street, snow swirling around it as its engine rumbled.Garrett Shaw, the northern legion’s intake officer, tossed my duffel into the back for me.“Chloe, once you get in this vehicle, you’re bound by the border’s secrecy rules.”He held out a signal-blocking pouch. “From now on, your personal communications and social media accounts will be temporarily suspended. Is there anyone you need to contact before we leave?”I looked down at my communicator. My parents worked on classified assignments and couldn’t come to see me off. When they told me to take care of myself the night before, I could hear how much it hurt them.Holden. Elias. The familiar names flashed through my mind one by one. They’d once mattered so much to me. We’d been so close. But now they belonged to the past.“No one.” I climbed into the vehicle and was about to turn my communicator off.At the same time, the party at Elias’s apartment was just getting started. They wer
