Chapter 2

Author: Mellona
Before I left Central City, I wanted to return the last few things that belonged to them.

So I went to find Holden at the training grounds.

When he was 15, he’d pulled his first boar’s tusk during his coming-of-age trial. He’d made it into a pendant and asked me to keep it for him.

He said it was the badge of honor he’d earned in his coming-of-age trial. He wanted to give his most precious trophy to the most important person in his life.

When I found him, he was dripping with sweat as he set up a heated mattress for Mia.

I held out the tusk. “Here. It’s yours.”

He blinked, then tossed the tusk into a junk bin without a second thought. “Why are you giving it back all of a sudden? Actually, your timing’s perfect. Mia needs help moving some heavy stuff. You’re strong. Come give me a hand.”

The trophy pendant he’d once called so precious had been tossed aside without a thought.

I was the only one who’d ever taken those promises seriously.

I stayed where I was. “I might not get another chance to return it. I need to go pack my gear.”

Holden snorted. “You’ve been tough since you were a kid. You can pack a field bag in ten minutes flat. What’s the rush?”

I didn’t bother saying another word. I just turned to leave.

He didn’t even ask what day I was leaving.

Then I gave him back the hand-drawn maps he’d left with me.

He took the maps, but his eyes suddenly locked onto the leather-bound diary I was hugging to my chest.

It was my personal diary, filled with ten years of memories I’d carefully written down about growing up with Holden and Elias.

“Leave the diary here.”

Holden spoke as if it were the most natural thing in the world. “Mia wants to write a memoir. She wants to know more about me and Elias.”

Beside him, Mia gazed at the old diary with watery eyes and said in a timid, pleading voice, “Chloe, I just want to copy down a few stories from when you were kids. I want to know what they were like growing up. I promise I won’t mess with your things—”

“But you were never part of our childhood.” I looked up and cut her off.

Holden frowned. “Do you have to be so mean? She just met us a few years later than you did. She’s upset she missed out on growing up with us.”

“So you get to take my memories by force to make up for what she missed?” I shot back, every word clear.

Holden completely lost his patience. Before I could say anything else, he grabbed my hand, jerked it toward him, and wrenched the diary free.

“We’re only borrowing it for a few days so we can copy some things down. When we’re done, I’ll have Elias bring it back to you.”

I slowly unclenched my hand and answered calmly, “Fine.”

That diary held ten years of my most precious memories. But every time they chose Mia over me, those memories lost a little more of their meaning. Now they meant nothing to me.

My answer caught Holden off guard. His expression softened, and he spoke in a gentler tone. “See? Wouldn’t it be easier if you just agreed from the start? Go train up north and don’t worry. Once you’ve had enough hard knocks and learned to calm down, we’ll put in a request to bring you back.”

All this time, he’d forgotten what those orders meant. He’d never cared enough to remember.

Once that northern transfer took effect, I couldn’t even apply to come back for five years.

Maybe Elias was trying to make up for it. He took me out to a restaurant, something he’d never done before.

It was supposed to be a date, but he spent the whole evening glued to his communicator, replying to Mia’s messages.

Mia said the mattress was too soft and hurt her back, so he arranged to exchange it right away.

Mia said the wolf howls scared her, so he sent her voice messages to calm her down.

The ribs in front of me went stone cold, and he didn’t even notice.

“Elias, do you remember what I’m doing tomorrow?” I tapped my plate with my silver fork.

He finally looked up, a little impatient. “Packing to leave?”

“Something like that.”

He visibly relaxed and pushed the glass of red wine toward me. “Come on, don’t look so upset. Just focus on settling in up north. We’ll come visit once the weather clears up.

“Oh, right. You’ve got that memory stone, don’t you? Before you go, trim down the footage you’re in and send it over. I want it for Mia’s memoir.”

My memories, my footage—all of it was something they could use to make Mia happy.

To them, I was nothing more than a tool they could use whenever it suited them.

It didn’t surprise me at all. For Mia, they’d throw me away without a second thought.

The border transfer, the memory stone, the diary. Whatever Mia wanted, I was expected to give it up for nothing—and somehow thank them for looking out for me.

When I got home, I pulled up all the footage, selected every clip I appeared in, and deleted them for good.

I gave the empty memory stone to a servant and asked him to take it to Elias after I left.

It was my last gift to them. A past wiped clean of Chloe.

With that done, I zipped up my only black duffel bag.

18 years of my life here, and it all fit in a single bag.

After five years, my mandatory service contract ended.I was 23. I’d gone from the youngest recruit in the Vanguard Legion to supreme commander of the Far North Line. That same winter, packs from across the werewolf kingdom gathered for a summit in Central City.I went back as the Far North Line’s representative, leading my personal guard.Five years later, I crossed the energy barrier at the boundary marker again. New buildings now stood where I’d dropped the badge. My aide followed my gaze. “Commander, looking for something?”I looked away, my voice even. “Nothing. Just taking in the view.”On the day of the summit, every high-ranking wolf in Central City was there.Elias and Holden were sitting in the back rows.Five years had passed. Holden had lost his old swagger. Elias had gotten much thinner, with gloom and exhaustion etched deep into his face. As for Mia, I heard she’d left for another pack a year ago because she couldn’t stand being ignored. When I walked up to the main podiu

Life on the Far North Line was harsher than I’d imagined. And a lot more satisfying. My first week in camp, I followed Rowan, the legion commander, out into the storm-lashed no-man’s-land.Daytime temperatures were 40 below. At night, we had to be on constant guard against attacks by roaming rogues. The wind always carried ice and the smell of blood.A female fighter on the line handed me a piece of roasted meat.“Regret signing the blood oath?”I took a bite, swallowed the tough meat, and shook my head. “No regrets.”“Miss home?”I thought about it.“I miss what our kind is really supposed to stand for.”“Nobody else?” she asked.“There’s nobody else.”Six months later, while I was fighting off a massive night raid by a pack of rogues, my wolf evolved.I killed the rogues’ leader and nailed his fang to the trophy wall on the line. Before dawn that morning, Rowan brought out a flask of strong winter brew, clapped me on the shoulder, and laughed.“Chloe, you were born for the far north!

The next day, news that Chloe had voluntarily signed a blood oath to serve on the Far North Line spread all over Central City.It wasn’t an ordinary exile. This was the highest tier of the Elder Council’s selection process for the Vanguard Legion.Chloe was the only one of her generation in Central City to pass that brutal screening. So many others hadn’t made it out alive. The she-wolves who’d mocked Chloe in the council hall the day before went pale on the spot.Elias stopped Brianna, the she-wolf who’d drenched Chloe in dirty water, outside the training grounds.“Who knocked over the basin?” Elias’s voice was ice-cold.Brianna’s smile froze. “Elias... my hand just slipped.”Elias raised his hand, his face blank, and the full weight of his Alpha power came crashing down. Brianna screamed as it forced her to her knees, her back slick with cold sweat.“Your hand slipped?” He looked down at her. “Then kneel here until it stops slipping.”None of it made Elias feel any better. When Chloe

Frantic, Elias rushed to the Elder Council’s border dispatch center with Holden.Harlan Pierce, the dispatch officer, regarded them coldly from behind the energy barrier.“And what is your relationship to Chloe?”Elias answered without thinking. “I’m her mate.”Harlan pulled up her file on his holo-terminal, his voice flat. “The system shows that Chloe has unilaterally dissolved her mate bond. Her emergency contact field is blank.”Elias’s expression froze. He swallowed hard.“She’s just mad at me... Please, just tell me which outpost she’s been assigned to.”“Sorry. The Far North Line is top secret. I’m not authorized to tell you.”Holden slammed his palm on the counter.“We grew up together!”Harlan looked up.“Then as her friends, didn’t you know she left the city on the transport this morning?”Neither of them said a word. They hadn’t known.Earlier, while they were tearing through Chloe’s room, they hadn’t even glanced at the transfer addendum sitting on her desk. After leaving th

Once the transport entered the restricted border zone, Garrett collected my communicator.“From now on, your legion ID code is your only identification.”Garrett dropped the communicator into a shielded box. “Your previous identity and social media accounts are now suspended.”I nodded. “Understood.”I leaned back against the transport’s hard seat. I hadn’t felt this light in ten years. No more being on call all the time. No more cleaning up Holden’s messes. No more wearing myself out trying to read Elias’s moods. The quiet all around me felt safe.Meanwhile, back in Central City, Mia’s party was in full swing.Holden popped open a bottle of expensive champagne while Elias sat on the sofa, glancing at the wall clock.Five past seven that evening.Chloe still hadn’t shown up.He pulled out his communicator and sent a message. “Where are you?”An error message immediately flashed across the screen.“This contact code has been deactivated.”He stared, then frowned and sent another.“Chloe

A black armored transport stood at the end of the street, snow swirling around it as its engine rumbled.Garrett Shaw, the northern legion’s intake officer, tossed my duffel into the back for me.“Chloe, once you get in this vehicle, you’re bound by the border’s secrecy rules.”He held out a signal-blocking pouch. “From now on, your personal communications and social media accounts will be temporarily suspended. Is there anyone you need to contact before we leave?”I looked down at my communicator. My parents worked on classified assignments and couldn’t come to see me off. When they told me to take care of myself the night before, I could hear how much it hurt them.Holden. Elias. The familiar names flashed through my mind one by one. They’d once mattered so much to me. We’d been so close. But now they belonged to the past.“No one.” I climbed into the vehicle and was about to turn my communicator off.At the same time, the party at Elias’s apartment was just getting started. They wer
