The large gate to the dungeon cracked open, and Raina opened her dimmed eyes, not at all pleased to see the ray of light again, the second time since she was imprisoned three years ago.
Two warriors stood in front of her, their eyes filled with disdain. One of them walked in and pulled her up from the floor.
The men dragged her through the dark hall, arriving at a brighter side of the pack house, once her room, back when she was still the Pack’s heiress.
Waiting there was Aria, her uncle’s mate and the Pack’s Luna.
Without giving her much detail, they forced Raina to take a bath and had two omegas wash her body thoroughly, even doing her the courtesy of using ointment.
Raina wondered what was going on as she bathed and exhaled shakily. The only time she had enjoyed such luxury after her parents’ death three years ago was on her eighteenth birthday.
She stepped out of the bathtub when she was done and put on the underwear laid out for her. Finding no other clothes, she came out of the room.
“Bring her here,” Aria had ordered the men earlier, and Raina immediately protested.
“What about clothes?” she asked. The ones she had taken off when she entered were also gone.
“Why would you need any clothes?” Aria answered, and before Raina could protest again, iron chains bit into her wrists.
The two warriors dragged her across the stone courtyard like a captured beast.
Their grips were cruel, each tug jerking her forward until her bare feet scraped and stumbled against the cold ground.
Raina's heart pounded against her chest, each thud echoing the same thought she had been dreading since her birthday two weeks ago.
Dozens of male eyes turned to her with hunger, and for the umpteenth time in her eighteen years of misery, Raina wished she had never been born.
She had been the glorified daughter of Alpha Stone, until the day her father was framed for rebelling against the Lycan King and lost his life along with her mother.
The men shoved her inside, dragging her like an animal through a crowd of werewolves, and made her stand at the center of the hall.
Raina tried to wrap her arms around her body, but the warriors wrenched them apart, forcing her to stand tall and open, like a display.
The Alphas gathered erupted in laughter at her resistance, their voices scraping against Raina’s ears like rusted knives.
These were the males who had come to bid a price for her body.
A hush fell. Every eye raked over her, and she felt their stares crawling across her skin like greasy fingers.
Alpha Marcus, her uncle, stood upon the dais broad-shouldered and smug, his greedy eyes scanning the crowd of powerful wolves and lesser Alphas sitting in the room.
He turned towards Raina, forcing her down to her knees with painful force, then curled his lips in mock affection.
“My dear niece,” he said, bile rising in Raina’s throat.
“Today, you are finally doing something good for the pack and bringing me a great fortune.”
He turned to the gathered wolves, his voice booming through the hall.
“My fellow Alphas," Marcus’s voice rang out smoothly, spreading his arms as if welcoming old friends to a feast.
"Before you stands a treasure unlike any other: Raina Stone, daughter of the late Alpha Stone. Eighteen summers old, untainted, and, as you can already tell, blessed by the Goddess as a breeder.”
A ripple of murmurs followed, spreading like wildfire.
The word breeder pierced Raina's chest, though she had heard it countless times before.
When her wolf, Eve, awakened two weeks ago, she had prayed she would be a fighter like her father’s wolf, or a healer like her mother’s. Instead, she had received a curse.
A breeder wolf.
The kind every male desires and can’t resist—capable of drawing even mated wolves to her scent. The kind every female hates.
Her womb was supposedly blessed with the ability to bear strong and multiple pups, but to Raina, it was nothing but a curse.
She felt the scent slipping from her now, curling into the air like invisible smoke. She clenched her fists, trying to hold it back, but she couldn’t.
Her wolf whimpered inside her, powerless to stop it.
“Lovely,” one Alpha chuckled, his sharp eyes glinting.
“Her scent alone is worth a fortune.”
Heat rose in Raina’s chest, choking her. She bit her lips until she tasted blood, fighting the tears burning behind her eyes.
But of course, crying wouldn't save her.
"Strip her!" one of them shouted with a hearty laugh, and others quietly agreed.
"The one who wins the bid tonight gets to have her all to himself. The main prize can’t be revealed to everyone," Marcus assured, reducing her to nothing more than a commodity.
“She will fetch a good price,” one of them said loudly.
“But her skin is too pale, she won’t last long,” another added.
“With her beauty, I’m sure she will bear healthy pups to increase the number of my pack,” someone chuckled.
Raina’s stomach twisted as their words sliced through her. Every one of them saw her as a vessel, a body to be used to satisfy their lust and breed pups.
“My fellow Alphas, she is the beloved daughter of the traitor who stood against the Lycan King three years ago. Her womb will more than make up for her father’s sin,” Marcus announced, and laughter echoed in the room.
“Let the bidding begin,” he declared.
“One hundred!” a thickset Alpha bellowed from the front row, his lips pulling into a grin.
"I want to give her to my sons to play with," he added.
“Two hundred!” another countered almost immediately, his eyes burning with hunger.
“She will be a good breeder,” the first smirked, and laughter erupted among the men.
“Three hundred!”
“Four!” someone else bid.
“Why not make her a breeder for everyone in the pack instead?” another Alpha laughed.
Raina’s vision blurred as the numbers climbed higher, their voices overlapping in a frenzy.
Her ears rang with the sound, and she stood frozen, every muscle taut. Her heart raced faster with each shouted offer.
Marcus nodded approvingly, stroking his chin as though admiring a fine piece of art. Raina's chest heaved with shallow breaths.
Rage simmered beneath her fear as she listened to their vile words, her head spinning with dizziness.
Inside her, her wolf whined, pressing against the walls of her mind.
"Raina... Please... Someone save us," Eve pleaded.
“Six hundred, going once!” Marcus’s voice rang out.
“Six hundred, going twice!” He went on, and the Alpha who had bid the price stood up and touched Raina's waist, taking a deep inhale.
The humiliation burned hotter than fire, scorching through Raina's veins. She wanted to scream, to tear free and fight, but she couldn’t. Marcus would kill her before she took two steps off the platform.
“Six hundred, going...”
A deep, commanding voice sliced through the hall before Marcus could finish his words and strike the gravel to seal her fate.
“Two million,” the voice echoed.
The words and price struck the hall like thunder and silence followed, every Alpha frozen.
Even Marcus’s lips parted in disbelief.
Raina’s heart stuttered instantly at the familiar but dreadful voice. She knew that voice. She would never forget it.
Xavier Blackthorn.
The Lycan King.
The man who had murdered her father.
The crowd gasped. The bidding died instantly.
Raina suddenly slumped to the ground, trembling and breaking the heavy silence in the air.Her chest heaved with panicked breaths, and the iron chains clinked against the stone floor as her thin arms wrapped protectively around herself.Xavier’s body trembled lightly, and he hurried towards her. Gripping her chains in his claws, he tore them apart as if they were ordinary ropes, then draped his coat over her body again. He swept Raina up in one arm and slung her over his shoulder as though she weighed nothing. Raina let out a startled cry, but he didn’t stop.Everyone stared in silence, stunned. None of them had ever seen their king spare a glance at any female in the Pack, let alone carry one in his arms.Even Clara hadn’t been given that privilege.Xavier ignored all their exaggerated stares and walked back to the main house. Clara Anderson rushed down the stairs as soon as she heard the murmurs of Xavier’s arrival. Excited, she hurried toward him with her arms open, ready to wrap them around him.Xavier paused at the sight of her and frowned deeply, forcing Clara to stop in front of him instead.“I told you not to leave your bed, your body is still weak,” Xavier scolded her, but Clara only smiled willfully and inched forward to hug him, giggling.“You’re back. I missed you so much,” she said, wrapping her arms around his waist since she couldn’t reach his shoulders.Xavier stiffened but didn't push her away.“I was only gone for two days,” Xavier replied, but Clara refused to let go and he pushed her arm gently.Clara was his master’s daughter, and before his master’s death, he had entrusted Xavier to keep her safe and to find a cure for the poison in her body. That was why Xavier had brought her back to the Pack house, making sure the doctors treated her daily in hopes of finding a permanent cure.“Why
The Alpha standing next to Raina stood to his feet, ready to counter whoever had spoken, but he froze instantly as he came face to face with him and released his hold on Raina."I raise the bid to two million." Xavier's voice echoed again, and the hall choked with silence. The air in the room shifted instantly, and the laughter died. Every head turned toward the back of the hall where the voice came from, and then murmurs began once again. The sight of him was worse than chains. His face alone shackled her with memories she could never escape. She is more shocked by the price he offered to get her.Xavier Blackthorn. The Lycan King. The stories had never done him justice.
