INICIAR SESIÓNMilene’s POV
The silence inside the car was heavy, almost suffocating. Angelo sat beside me, typing something on his phone with an intensity that made it clear he was used to being in control of everything.
I kept my gaze out the window, watching the city blur past. The farther we went, the fewer buildings I recognized. The streetlights became sparse, and the roads smoother, more private. My mother’s words echoed in my head: “He’ll bring you home after the event.” But something in my gut said that wasn’t entirely true.
“Are you hungry?” he asked suddenly.
I startled, looking at him. “No,” I replied too quickly. My voice sounded thin.
He gave me a brief look — unreadable — then tapped on the console in front of him. “Stop at Le Doré. Pick up dinner,” he told the driver.
“Yes, sir.”
I folded my arms, trying to steady myself. “Where are we going?”
“To my house. For now.”
“For now?” My fingers curled into my dress. “My mother said I needed to go with you to an event.”
He tilted his head, eyes narrowing as if he was weighing how much to tell me. “We made an agreement that you should be aware of but it seems like your mother kept the details from you.”
I blinked. “What agreement?” Just as the words slipped from my tongue, I remembered that I needed to play it cool so that he won’t be angry and then send me back to my mother. If the deal does not go as planned, then I should be rest assured to get the beating of my life or probably get thrown out.
“Oh yeah, that agreement..” I said quickly before he would be able to sense my lies. “It slipped my mind” I said again. He looked at me with a raised brows. I looked away immediately, I could feel the tenacity of my nervousness from within and if he continues staring at me like that, the truth might just come out in the open.
I know nothing about the agreement, I would probably figure it out later but when. For now all I have I been able to gather is the fact that I would be spending the night at his place nights.. what about the event mother spoke about?
The cracking of his knuckles brought me back to reality and then his voice broke into my thoughts. “You don’t need to worry. You’ll be safe, fed,and treated with respect, as long as you don’t give me a reason not to.”
There it was; a silent warning and also a confirmation that I would be leaving with him henceforth… what sort of arrangement had my mother done with him?
We fell into silence and then dinner was picked up from a well known five star restaurant downtown. A man in a black suit handed Angelo the bags through the window like it was a briefcase full of gold. He passed one to me. “You’ll need to eat.”
I nodded, but my appetite was gone.
When we finally pulled through a large iron gate, I realized this wasn’t just a house it was an estate. The driveway was endless, lined with trimmed hedges and glowing lanterns. The building that emerged was massive modern, elegant, and cold.
I stepped out, the gravel crunching under my heels. “This is… yours?”
“Yes,” he replied simply. “You’ll be staying in the west wing.”
There were guards. I counted at least six before we even entered the building. Not regular security these were men with sharp eyes, hidden weapons, and that quiet readiness to act.
The foyer was grand, marble floors, vaulted ceilings, expensive art on the walls. I felt like I’d walked into a movie set for the ultra-wealthy.
“Come,” he said, leading me down a hall with walls that smelled faintly of leather and cedar. A housekeeper appeared and bowed slightly before speaking to him in Italian.
“Your room,” he said, pushing open a door. Inside was a luxurious bedroom too big for one person, yet impersonal.
“There are clothes in the closet, essentials in the drawers. If you need anything, tell Mara,” he said, gesturing to the woman standing silently behind me.
“I’ll have someone bring your dinner here,” he added.
“I thought we’d eat together,” I said without thinking.
He looked at me. “Do you want that?”
I didn’t know. Did I?
“I am not used to eating alone.”
His expression softened for a fraction of a second. “Fine. Come down in twenty minutes.”
Twenty minutes later, I followed Mara through the maze-like hallways to a dining room that could seat twenty people. He sat at the head of the table, now changed into a simple black button-down.
He stood when I entered. “Sit.”
We ate in silence for a while. The food was delicious, but I barely tasted it. My thoughts were too loud.
“So, this would be my home for now? I asked finally, pushing aside my plate.
He didn’t answer right away. “Yes, that is how it seems.. except you have some reservations and I would personally make your opinions count.”
I went silent, something in me wanted to ask if I would be working for him but the room was shown did not seem like that of a worker. “I am only here because I need to help my family out..” I paused for a brief second “I have no reservations, I should be thanking you for the help.”
I looked up from my meal only to see him staring at me with a mischievous smile on his face “then you should have no issues becoming my bride, I thought you were already rethinking your decision”
My chest tightens, I feel my left hands shake underneath the table “your bride?” I asked, I could barely hear the sound of my own voice but I bet it was loud enough because he nodded in response.
“Yes! Your bride” I responded again trying not to seem suspicious.. if this is the only way to bring my family out lf debt then I would willingly sacrifice myself for them.
“You’ll get used to this,” he added, sipping from his glass.
“What is this exactly?”
His eyes gleamed. “A life you don’t walk away from.”
My stomach twisted
After dinner, he walked me back to my room. The house was quiet now, save for the distant buzz of security radios and the hum of power.
“Lock your door,” he said.
“Do I need to?”
“Everyone here answers to me. But not everyone has discipline.”
Milene's POVThe car smelled like gasoline and something sharper underneath it, fear maybe, mine or Roberto's, I couldn't tell anymore. I pressed myself against the door, as far from him as the small backseat allowed, my wrist throbbing where his fingers had dug in."You didn't have to do this," I said, once my voice came back to me. "Whatever you think you're proving. This isn't proving it.""You don't get to tell me what this proves." His jaw was tight, staring straight ahead at the back of the driver's headrest, none of the easy charm left in him now. "You don't know what it's like. Watching someone hand you scraps your whole life and call it generosity.""So this is about Angelo.""This is about everything." He finally looked at me, and something in his face had cracked open, raw in a way I'd never seen from him, not even in the hallway that first week. "I did everything right. I gave him loyalty. I gave him years. And every time I asked for so
Milene's POVThe exchange point turned out to be an old boathouse, half collapsed, moonlight slicing through gaps in the roof where shingles had long since given up. Enzo had described it as abandoned for years, which explained the smell of rot and salt water thick enough to catch in the back of my throat the second I stepped out of the car.Roberto was waiting when I arrived, leaning against a support beam like he'd been standing there all night, unbothered, that same easy smile in place despite everything. Mia sat on an overturned crate a few feet from him, hands bound in front of her, a bruise blooming along her cheekbone that hadn't been there two days ago. My chest tightened at the sight of it."There she is," Roberto said, pushing off the beam. "I was starting to think my brother would try something clever instead.""I'm here," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "Let her go.""In a minute." His eyes moved over me slowly, and I forced myse
Milene's POVNobody slept. The house moved through the next two days in a strange, brittle version of normal, meals nobody ate, conversations that trailed off halfway through, everyone waiting for a phone to ring.Enzo's people found nothing in the first twenty four hours. No trace of the car past the coastal road, no confirmed sighting of Roberto at any of the properties they checked, just silence stretched thin over every hour that passed. I watched Angelo age in front of me during that stretch, the exhaustion carving itself deeper into his face every time another lead came back empty. It was the second night, close to midnight, when Roberto called again.Angelo put it on speaker this time, in the study, Enzo and Mara and I all standing close enough to hear, and Roberto's voice came through easy and unhurried, like none of this had cost him a single night's sleep."Tick tock, brother," he said. "You're running out of hours.""Let me hear h
Milene's POVNobody moved for a second. It felt like the whole house had stopped breathing along with me."Where," Angelo said, and the word came out so quiet it was almost worse than if he'd shouted it."I don't know yet." Enzo's hands were still shaking around his phone. "The car she took, we tracked it as far as the old coastal road, then it just... stopped transmitting. Same as the cameras in the east corridor. He's had help cutting our tracking, boss. This wasn't done alone.""Mikhail," Angelo said, the name coming out like something bitter. "He's been giving Roberto resources this whole time. That's how he's stayed hidden for weeks.""We don't know that yet.""We don't know anything yet," Angelo snapped, and it was the first time I'd heard him raise his voice at Enzo in all the months I'd known him. He caught himself almost instantly, pressing the heel of his hand against his eyes like he could push the panic back down by force. "I'm s
Milene's POV"Where's my wing," I said, already moving toward the door, though some part of me already understood the question didn't make sense the second it left my mouth. Of course I knew where my wing was. What I meant was, where's the danger, how close is it, how much time do I have."Stay here," Angelo said, catching my arm before I could get past him, his grip firm enough to stop me but careful enough that it didn't hurt. "Enzo, get eyes on the east corridor. Now.""Already sent two men," Enzo said, already halfway out the door himself, phone pressed to his ear, voice low and clipped in a way that made my skin crawl. "Nothing on the cameras past eleven forty. Feed just... cuts.""Cuts how?""Like someone knew exactly where they were pointed."Angelo's jaw tightened, and for a second I watched him war with something, whether to leave me here where it was supposedly safe or keep me close enough to see with his own eyes that I was still
Milene's POVI didn't tell Angelo everything Angeline said. Not right away.I told him the parts that mattered for the war, that she hadn't sent anyone after Mia, that her father was using her humiliation as leverage he never actually cared about beyond the terms he could squeeze out of it. Angelo listened with his jaw tight the whole drive home, and when I finished, he was quiet long enough that I thought he might not respond at all."You believe her," he said finally. Not a question."I do.""Why?"I thought about the way her hands had shaken around that coffee cup, the brittle grief underneath her fury. "Because she didn't have to tell me any of it. She could have let me walk in there scared and confused and said nothing useful at all, and instead she told me things that could get her in trouble with her own father if he knew."Angelo didn't argue, which told me more than agreement would have.I didn't tell him about the gir
Milene’s POVWhat is he talking about? I looked at my mother for answers but she turned away smiling widely at this stranger whose name seemed familiar but sketchy.“Go with him to where?” I whispered to my mother but she just ignored me but I could swear that she heard me. I should have known that
“Your outfit for the auction” my mother said dumping a blue dress wrapped in a transparent nylon on my bed.It has just been two hours since Mr Arnold left the house and my mum was already thinking about gracing an event “I thought we were supposed to be keeping a low profile” I said slowly, I felt
