“Your outfit for the auction” my mother said dumping a blue dress wrapped in a transparent nylon on my bed.

It has just been two hours since Mr Arnold left the house and my mum was already thinking about gracing an event “I thought we were supposed to be keeping a low profile” I said slowly, I felt my voice trembling a bit.

“Yes” she said dismissively “but this is not like the other auctions we have been attending, I got an exclusive invite and I’ve been told that there is someone there that might have a solution to the issues we are having now” she said as the last words rolled out of her lips calmly.

“Will Liv be coming with us?” I asked, my throat felt a little bit tight.

“No,” she replied quickly “she can stay by herself, we won’t even be spending much time at the auction.”

“Urm..” I felt my throat tight again, I did not like the idea of Liv staying my herself but then my mother knew better and I could not oppose her decision.

I stared at my reflection at the mirror, trying to nurse the red bruise that was on my cheeks “a little bit of powder will have that covered” my mum said again

“Yes” I nodded, my voice sounded barely above a whisper.

“We will be out in twenty” she said already walking out of the room.

I stared at the blue dress on the bed, a part of me wanted to scream but I just held on to the dress squeezing the fabric as my thoughts ran freely. The dress seemed expensive and even though I wanted to ask her when and how she got it, I know better than to open my mouth to question her actions.

I applied a little bit of powder on my face like my mother had suggested and then I slipped the dress on.

“We are running out of time” I hear my mother’s voice again, accompanied by clicking of heels.

“I am almost done” I replied, staring at myself in the mirror.

I have never gone to an auction before, my father never took I or Liv to any of those but we did attend other societal functions like the tea parties. I would have asked my mum why she wanted me to come along but then again the only thing my brain could pick from the whole thing was that she did not want to be there alone.

When I got out of my room, I saw my mum standing at the other end of the hallways with a blank stare on her face “we are running late” she hissed.

I walked closely behind her as she led the way out of the house. When we finally got outside, I was met with a sleek black car “how?” I asked a little bit confused, staring at the ride while my mum pushed passed me causing my body to collide with the body of the car.

“I told you, we don’t have much time on our hands” she said ignoring the question and sounding a little bit irritated.

We didn’t speak much during the ride, my mind raced with questions as to how my mother got this car. It could be rented but then again renting cars like this was a bit expensive so why would she spend so much in renting a car when we had so much on our plate already. She was actually no different from my dad who always felt the need to keep up with the appearance even when the business was crumbling.

The car soon came to a halt, bringing me back to reality. I watched my mum pass her I.V to one of the security guards and then they gave her permission to drive into the compound.

The building looked different from what I had imagined but then again, I have never been to a thing like this so I wouldn’t know how it looked like. “Stay behind me” my mother ordered “make sure you stay close” she said again.

Angelo’s POV

I watched the lady and her daughter walk into the building, her family owes me a huge sum of money and from my findings there is no possible way the debt could be paid and so a compromise was made but only if all party agrees and from what I can see right now, neither of them has an objection to the agreement.

“Don’t you think people are going to talk about you getting married so suddenly?” Enzo asked, his voice low.

“ I don’t care” I replied staring at the door

I really did not care what anyone thought but I needed to create a distraction for the people that are after my life, I needed time to investigate and getting married now would have them think that I wasn’t watching but the truth is I had my eyes everywhere.

“Why not make a public appearance before the marriage?” He suggested

“It is just to distract them” I replied, my tongue ticking inside my mouth as I took another glass of whiskey.

All I needed was some sort of distraction, I would have gone with any girl from the other mafia families but I am not yet sure of the persons or person who had made an attempt on my life.

Mrs Scardoni walked through the doors, followed closely by her daughter who looked extremely nervous. She had beautiful long hair and the blue dress she had on made her look regal.

“Sorry for keeping you waiting, Mr Rossi” Mrs Scardoni spoke up dragging her daughter behind her, she looked confused as though she expected something else.

I offered them a seat while I gave Enzo signal to leave so I could have a proper discussion with Mrs Scardoni.

“This is my daughter, Milene” she said smiling widely, I watched Milene whose gaze was fixed to the floor as if there was a subject of interest on it.

“Is she ready to come with me now?” I asked not willing to prolong the meeting any further.

Milene’s POV"Did you kill him?"My voice trembled as I stood,my hands shaking. He had , just before reaching for the door. Silence filled the space between us.He didn’t turn immediately."He betrayed me," Angelo said at last, without looking over his shoulder. The words dropped like a blade. That was it. No denial. No explanation. Just those three damning words. He turned his head slightly, just enough for me to see a bit of his expression, unreadable. Cold even."Milene, there are things in this world you don't understand," he said softly. "Things I do to keep people in line. To keep you safe.""Safe?" I spat, the word bitter on my tongue. "You think killing someone makes me feel safe?""It makes sure no one crosses me again. No one touches what’s mine."And there it was again. What’s mine.As if I were just another object in his collection. A trophy wife, bought and shelved."He was a traitor," he added, voice low, almost too calm. "That’s what happens to people like him I

Bang. “Clean up this area” I said flatly and immediately, my men start cleaning the area, dragging the blood covered body out of the room, they are used to this already, they know where exactly to bury the bodies or burn if necessary “Enzo” I called, not turning to look, I didn’t need to. “I want a detailed report on how the gem got missing” ‘Yes boss’, he replied immediate

  • Auctioned to the mafia land   Chapter 8

Milene’s POVDisappointed.. that is the word to describe my current situation. Pretending like I knew what was going on while trying to figure things out is one of the hardest stunts to pull. The rumbling of my tummy reminded me about breakfast. Mara had long left me, so I had to make my way to the dinning which was not hard to find. I met one of the workers setting the cutleries in the dining room.I made my way to one of the seats while she continued “Breakfast would be served shortly..” she said. After breakfast, I decided to clear my head. The walls of my room were starting to feel too tight, too close. I needed to move, breathe, think.Mara had reminded me of the meeting with Carlo. So I needed to go see him at the garden, but instead of heading there, I decided to just wander around the hallways, tryung to figure out the maze like building myself until I eventually got lost.At first, I thought I could find my way back easily. But every hallway looked identical with gold accents

  • Auctioned to the mafia land   Chapter 7

Milene’s POVThe soft morning light filtered into my room, but I didn’t feel rested. I had barely slept too much on my mind, too many questions. What exactly had mum gotten us into or should I say me?A knock on the door jolted me out of bed. Before I could answer, Mara stepped in.“Mr. Moretti requests your presence downstairs,” she said. “He wants to introduce you to the staff.”Introduce me?I nodded silently and slipped into the clothes, she laid out a simple white blouse and tailored black slacks. It was modest but expensive. My hands traced the lines of the stitch and from it I felt out of place. I am supposed to be used to clothings like this but I had long abandoned them because of the debts. I could also so I wore more tailored clothes like this to tea parties than I did roaming around my father’s mansion.Mara led me through the hallways again, I followed her close and the sound of our steps echoed in the hallways. As we entered the main foyer, I saw them, the staff. Lined u

  • Auctioned to the mafia land   Chapter 6

Milene’s POVThe silence inside the car was heavy, almost suffocating. Angelo sat beside me, typing something on his phone with an intensity that made it clear he was used to being in control of everything.I kept my gaze out the window, watching the city blur past. The farther we went, the fewer buildings I recognized. The streetlights became sparse, and the roads smoother, more private. My mother’s words echoed in my head: “He’ll bring you home after the event.” But something in my gut said that wasn’t entirely true.“Are you hungry?” he asked suddenly.I startled, looking at him. “No,” I replied too quickly. My voice sounded thin.He gave me a brief look — unreadable — then tapped on the console in front of him. “Stop at Le Doré. Pick up dinner,” he told the driver.“Yes, sir.”I folded my arms, trying to steady myself. “Where are we going?”“To my house. For now.”“For now?” My fingers curled into my dress. “My mother said I needed to go with you to an event.”He tilted his head,

  • Auctioned to the mafia land   Chapter 5

Milene’s POVWhat is he talking about? I looked at my mother for answers but she turned away smiling widely at this stranger whose name seemed familiar but sketchy.“Go with him to where?” I whispered to my mother but she just ignored me but I could swear that she heard me. I should have known that there was something wrong when I walked passed the doors and then saw how empty the place was, I should have known that there was something sketchy when the guards in the compound were more than the cars parked in it.“Why is he asking if I am ready to go with him?” I asked again but this time around my voice is a little bit audible and my mother finally spared me a look, I could also feel the gaze from the stranger.“I told you to talk this over with her before coming here, thought my words were clear enough” he barked sending chills down my spine..“I ...I did” my mum stutteredI have never heard my mum sound this scared or even stutter “I think she is acting up because she is nervous” sh
