"Clover, a blizzard is coming! Take us down the mountain now, or we'll all die here!"

One of my coworkers glanced at the sky and immediately knew something was wrong.

Clover Ainsley shook her head. "Elliot hasn't returned yet. Let's wait."

Snow fell in heavy flurries, and the roaring wind made everyone uneasy.

"What's the point of waiting?" someone snapped. "Didn't he say this mountain is like home to him? Let him come down on his own!"

"Right. We should've been off the mountain an hour ago, but he went off taking pictures. He can take his chances all he wants, but why pull the rest of us along?"

Their complaints died down under Clover's icy glare.

"If you don't want to wait, go ahead. I'm not stopping anyone."

One of them shot back, "You make it sound easy, but you're the only one who knows the way. You're the guide. If you don't lead us, no one will make it down."

"Then shut up!" Clover snapped. "If Elliot doesn't come back today, I'm not going anywhere. You're all shameless. We climbed this mountain together, yet all you care about is saving yourselves."

The words hit like a punch, and everyone flushed with anger. A friendlier coworker tugged at my sleeve. "Rowan, you need to talk some sense into your girlfriend."

I shook my head. "She's right. Elliot went up the mountain with us. We can't just leave him behind."

Everyone's faces drained of color.

"Rowan, how can you be so irresponsible?" one shouted. "We trusted you when we chose your girlfriend as our guide, and now you two are teaming up against us? When we get back, we're telling the supervisor everything."

Clover, however, seemed pleased. She leaned into my arms and whispered, "Who are you threatening? If you say another more word, I'm leaving you out here."

All of us were staff at the Frostpeak Research Institute, sent to collect samples from the glaciers on this mountain.

When the sampling site was first announced, I recommended Clover. The day before we left, she pointed out that the mountain's terrain was complicated and that we needed a second guide. That guide was Elliot West.

Elliot had mentioned he needed extra money, so he came on as a part-timer. Being a local, he knew the mountain like the back of his hand.

At first, everyone liked him. He was outgoing and cheerful, keeping spirits high on the drive up.

However, that changed when we got onto the mountain.

Even though his job was to guide us, Elliot treated it like a vacation. He goofed off with Clover, taking pictures and stopping every half an hour to rest.

Unlike them, we came to get the work done, not to have fun. Every extra moment waiting set our schedule back.

When some of my coworkers finally complained, Clover had no choice but to let Elliot wander off for his photos while she led the rest of us to the sampling site.

After collecting the samples, snow began to fall. Someone suggested going down, but Clover made us wait over an hour. No one dared say a word after that.

The storm grew worse. The wind shrieked and snow lashed at us. Just as someone was about to step forward on their own, Elliot finally appeared. "Clover, I knew you'd wait for me."

Clover let out a relieved breath, but before she could support him, a piercing cry broke out.

"Avalanche!"

Tons of snow tore loose from the cliffs, tumbling down like a white tidal wave straight toward us.

On camera, Clover and the others sobbed, accusing me of treating them like toys and forcing them to fight before I would take them away. They called me a rich man with sick tastes.Public opinion immediately turned against me. Nearly everyone insulted me, and some even boycotted my company. Many spoke up for them, claiming I had disregarded human life.As public outrage continued to build, Clover called me. She told me that if I didn't give her a large sum of money, she would reveal even more explosive details and ruin both my father and me. Leaving someone to die was a grave matter, and what I did back then was truly inhumane.I sneered. "Clover, have you forgotten that before my family's rescue team arrived, you were planning to kill me?""But you didn't die," she shot back. "You made it through, while we suffered for ten long days. In that blizzard, you used your money to overpower us. When I tell the full story, do you really think the public will support you? Even the police m

The group quickly got tangled up in a fight. These were the same people who complained nonstop about how exhausting their jobs were, yet now they fought as if they had taken some kind of stimulant. Clover was the most ferocious of them all. Despite being a woman, she had trained at a sports academy and later worked as a guide. She took down several people in no time.Outnumbered, she was injured as well. Just as she started walking toward me, Elliot rushed out and smashed a rock into her head.Clover turned to look at him, disbelief written all over her face. "Elliot, you…"Elliot didn't spare her a glance. He sprinted straight to me. "I won. Take me with you."I shrugged. Just as I was about to step aside, Clover struggled to her feet and clutched Elliot's leg tightly. "You're not going anywhere.""Are you crazy? Let go of me!" Elliot snapped, kicking at her hand viciously. There was nothing left of his usual gentle demeanor. When Clover still refused to let go, Elliot cr

Iris had come prepared with a rescue team and medical staff. After I was dug out, several people immediately began attending to me. Fortunately, I hadn't been exposed to the cold for long, and my body temperature hadn't dropped too far. Before long, I started to recover. As Iris kept layering clothes over me, warmth slowly spread through my entire body. Meanwhile, those who had been taken onto the helicopter were gradually brought back down. The atmosphere inside the cave grew strange and tense.Clover asked anxiously, "Rowan, are you okay?"Her words seemed to snap everyone out of their stupor. They rushed to check on me, and a few even stripped off their own layers to drape over me, as if worried I wasn't warm enough.I let out a soft laugh. "At a time like this, you can stop pretending. You were the ones who threw me into the snow."Everyone lowered their heads in unison.Iris clenched her fists. "Mr. Vale, you were thrown into the snow by these people?"Though she was a

Outside, the snow howled as it poured into the cave. Beneath the roar of wind and ice, the distant thudding of helicopter blades suddenly cut through the storm.Everyone erupted in cheers. "We're saved."The woman leading the group was named Iris Walker.Iris frowned. "Where is my client?"Clover pointed at Elliot and said anxiously, "He has a fever. Take us out of here and get him to a hospital immediately."Her worry blinded her to the fact that Elliot's expression darkened the instant they arrived. He burrowed deeper into my coat, hiding nearly all of his face.At first, Iris recognized the coat and truly thought it was me. Then she noticed the difference in build, and her expression changed. She roughly yanked the coat open.Clover instantly pointed at her and snapped, "What's wrong with you? How dare you treat him like that! Do you even want to keep your job?""This man?" Iris said, letting out a cold laugh. "Who does he think he is, pretending to be my client?"Clover fr

After learning that Elliot was the billionaire's son and that he could very likely get everyone out alive, the entire group began fawning over him. They gave up the cleanest, most comfortable spot in the cave for him without hesitation. When we climbed the mountain, Elliot had said he liked to travel light, so aside from his trekking pole, he hadn't brought anything with him. The moment he mentioned being thirsty or hungry, everyone rushed to offer him their water bottles and chocolate. As he ate and drank without restraint, he promised generously, "When we get out, I'll pay you back ten times over."Food and water could still be spared, but when night fell, no one was willing to give up their sleeping bags. Going without food or water for a few days was survivable, but spending a subzero night without a sleeping bag was a death sentence. No matter how much money Elliot offered, not a single person was willing to hand theirs over.He frowned and turned to Clover. "Clover, what sh

My colleagues' eyes went wide, and even Elliot and Clover turned pale. Everyone froze in place. Before the rolling snow reached us, I shouted at the top of my lungs, "Follow me! There's a cave over there!"The group snapped out of their daze and ran with me to a nearby cave. As soon as the last person entered the cave, the avalanche struck. Snow heaped at the entrance, cutting off every ray of light."What do we do now?" someone whispered in the dark. "We're not going to die here, are we?""It's all the two idiots' fault. If it weren't for them, we'd be home by now."Arguments broke out, and I switched on the ultra-bright emergency light I always carried. The cave glowed. When my coworker spotted Clover, he lost control and swung his fist toward her. "Clover, this is all your fault!"Elliot stepped between Clover and the angry coworkers. "Do you think hitting a woman makes you impressive? If you want to fight, take it out on me.""Fine, then we'll take you both on," several ot
