Darius waited until Dalian’s breath evened out, until he knew Dalian could hear him—and not just the noises in his head.

“You think you're the only one who’s ever doubted yourself?” he said, his voice calm, even. “You're not.”

Dalian’s jaw clenched, but he remained silent, unmoving.

Darius continued, steady and controlled. “You’re not broken because you're lost sometimes. You're not weak because you hurt. You're not lesser because you haven't figured it all out. I figured myself out when Ravenna came, and I'm still on that journey. I still hurt sometimes and I feel, but that doesn't make me any less of a man. No, it makes me strong. Being able to feel and hurt is not a weak thing, Dalian. Those emotions are what make us. Shape us.”
