Laurel’s POV

A sharp, breathless cry tore from my throat, immediately swallowed by his mouth as he kissed me again, deeper this time. The fullness of him filled the empty, hollow ache that had defined my existence for so long.

The friction was intense, immediate, and overwhelming. He moved within me with a fierce, driving urgency, his hips slamming against mine in a desperate, unrefined cadence that drove us both toward the edge within seconds.

The sensation was too sharp to sustain.

My vision blurred, the green glow of the hallway spinning as the tension inside me coiled tighter and tighter, fueled by the illicit thrill, the rejection at home, and the sheer perfection of his body.

He let out a low, feral growl, his muscles locking as he drove into me one last time.

The sudden, violent wave of my own release broke over me, a brilliant, shattering orgasm that made my entire body tremble.

The heavy, suffocating heat of the room slowly began to clear, replaced by the sharp return of the cool autumn air cutting through the lecture hall windows. The primal haze that had completely consumed me just moments ago dissolved, leaving behind a stark, glaring reality.

He slowly pulled back, his chest still heaving, his skin glistening with sweat under the amber glare of the desk lamp. As the physical connection broke, a thin, icy strand of shame instantly began to coil around my throat.

I am a professor. I am a mother and a wife.

At that moment I was a woman who had just collapsed onto a lecture desk with a nameless stranger because my husband’s digital ghost had driven me to madness.

The silence rushed back in, heavy and heavy with the rustle of the scattered exam papers on the floor. I immediately scrambled backward on the oak desk, my movements frantic as I pulled the ice-blue silk of my gown back down over my bare thighs, desperate to cover myself, desperate to reassemble the armor of professor Leonard.

I stood up, my frame trembling slightly as I smoothed out the wrinkled silk and drew my open trench coat tightly around my body, buttoning it with cold, rigid fingers. I kept my eyes fixed on the floor, unable to meet his gaze, waiting for the inevitable, awkward panic of a student who realized exactly what line he had just crossed.

But the panic never came.

"Julian," a deep, completely steady voice broke the silence.

I paused, my hand freezing on the lapel of my coat. I looked up.

The young man hadn't scrambled for his clothes. He had simply pulled his trousers back up to his hips, utterly unbothered, his dark eyes locked onto mine with a terrifyingly calm, self-assured intensity. He didn't look remorseful. He looked entirely satisfied, a faint, dangerous spark of possessiveness lingering in his expression.

He took a step toward me, bridging the small distance between us, and extended his right hand straight out in front of him. His palm was large, his fingers long and strong.

"Julian Vance," he announced, his tone formal, almost conversational, as if we were introducing ourselves at a faculty mixer rather than standing over a desk covered in scattered papers.

I turned towards the exit without a word.

….

Inside the quiet sanctuary of my office, I locked the door behind me and collapsed against it, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

I closed my eyes, letting my head fall back against the heavy wood as the silence of the room wrapped around me.

Suddenly, the vivid memory of what had just happened on that desk flashed through my mind, the bruising heat of his mouth, the raw power of his hands lifting my waist, the blunt, intoxicating force of his arrival inside me.

A sudden, violent rush of excitement flared deep in my belly, sending a scorching wave of electricity straight to my fingertips. My skin still tingled where he had gripped me.

Strangely, the heavy blanket of shame I expected to suffocate me never came. I felt no regret.

For the first in forever, well, it felt like that, I felt alive, felt seen, thoroughly consumed, and undeniably powerful.

Leonard had tried to reduce me to a ghost, but that stranger had worshipped me like a deity.

But as my breathing finally slowed and the analytical professor took over, reality crashed back into the room.

Julian Vance.

The name itself was a bizarre, mocking coincidence, but the reality of his identity was a boundary I couldn't cross again. I opened my eyes, staring at the dim green glow of the banker's lamp. This could never happen again. Never.

I backed my decision with cold, unyielding logic.

First, despite the dead contract of my personal life, I was a married woman with a daughter to protect. I was Professor Laurel Cruz Leonard, my husband’s name was stamped on my life, my home, and my legal identity, no matter how fractured we were.

Second, and more dangerously, he was a student, someone way younger, an undergraduate walking the same halls where I held an academic chair. The power dynamic alone was an ethical minefield that could incinerate my career if my husband or the board ever found out.

I had used him to shatter the numbness Leonard had inflicted on me, but the transaction was over. It had to be a one-time thing. A beautiful, reckless anomaly.

….

The early morning sun was just beginning to bleed a soft, golden pink across the Manhattan skyline when I pulled into the underground garage of the penthouse.

When I stepped out of the elevator and into the apartment, the suffocating weight that had driven me out the night before was entirely gone.

I walked down the quiet hallway and straight into the master bathroom, stripping off my trench coat and the wrinkled silk gown that was still carrying stamps from last night.

Stepping into the glass shower, I let the cascading hot water wash over my skin. As I lathered myself, a sudden, vivid memory of the student’s hands gripping my waist flashed through my mind, and a slow, involuntary smile spread across my face. I felt thoroughly alive.

Radiant.

I wrapped myself in a plush towel and walked back into the bedroom to get dressed. Leonard was still asleep, sprawled out on his side of our vast, cold bed. I stood at the foot of it, looking down at his handsome, sleeping face. Yesterday, this view would have filled me with a bitter, hollow ache. Today, there was only a cool, detached disappointment.

I looked at him and realized I didn't want to confront him anymore. The frantic urge to demand his phone password, to scream at him for his betrayal, had completely evaporated.

We are even now, I thought, a strange sense of peace washing over me. He had his dirty secrets with an unknown woman, and I had mine in Lecture Hall. The ledger was balanced.

Feeling an unfamiliar surge of confidence, I walked over to my walk-in closet. Instead of my usual conservative faculty blouses or somber mourning colors, I reached for a vibrant, tailored wrap dress in a deep emerald hue. It hugged my five-foot-eleven frame perfectly, emphasizing the curve of my waist and the length of my legs.

I let my hair fall in soft, bouncy waves around my shoulders, applied a touch of color to my cheeks, and looked in the mirror. For the first time in a while, I looked gorgeous. I felt gorgeous.

Energized, I floated down to the kitchen. The bitterness that usually clouded my mornings had been replaced by a light, effervescent hum. I began pulling ingredients from the refrigerator, and decided to cook a full, proper English breakfast for the family. The kitchen soon filled with the rich, comforting scents of sizzling thick-cut bacon, savory sausages, grilled tomatoes, and fresh coffee.

"Mom?"

I turned around to see Lilibeth standing in the doorway of the kitchen, rubbing her eyes. She stopped dead in her tracks, staring at me, then at the sprawling feast on the counter.

"Good morning, sweetheart!" I beamed, my voice lighter and looser than she had heard it in a year. "Go sit down, breakfast is almost ready."

Lilibeth’s eyes widened, a hesitant but thrilled smile breaking across her face. "Mom, you look... so pretty today, and happy. And you're cooking?"

"I felt like celebrating a beautiful morning," I said, blowing her a kiss.

She practically skipped to the dining table, her entire posture shifting because the dark cloud that usually hung over her mother had suddenly vanished.

A moment later, heavy, measured footsteps echoed down the hallway. Leonard walked into the kitchen, buttoning his silver cufflinks, his jaw tight as he braced himself. He stopped near the island, his gray eyes instantly locking onto me.

He took in the emerald dress, the radiant glow of my skin, and the bright, unbothered smile on my face. He looked at the breakfast spread, then back at me, his brow furrowing in deep confusion. He had expected a weeping wife, an interrogation, or a cold shoulder. Instead, he was looking at a woman who looked like she had just won the lottery.

"Laurel," he said slowly, his corporate armor slipping for a fraction of a second as he tried to read my countenance. "You're... up early."

"Yes, I am," I replied smoothly, pouring him a cup of black coffee and sliding it across the counter with a cheerful, effortless grace. "Drink up, Leonard. It’s a beautiful day."

He stared at the coffee, then at me, completely off-balance.

For the first time in a while Leonard had absolutely no control over what I was thinking, and it was driving him insane.

Laure’s POVThe silence in my office, once grounding, was now loud enough to let the echo of those text messages back into my head. Are you coming back to play?I stood up, leaving my trench coat draped over the leather chair, and stepped out into the corridor, I needed to move. I needed to let the physical world drown out the static in my brain.I descended the central stairwell and walked out into the crisp, night air of the main quad. The air smelled cleanly of damp earth, stone, and the faint, burnt-sugar scent of decaying foliage. It was a sensory shock that pulled me right out of my own mind.I wandered toward the undergraduate lecture blocks, a sprawling complex of mid-century brick and glass. Even at this hour, the university never entirely slept. Through the high windows of the 24-hour library, I could see the silhouettes of a few students hunched over laptops, their faces washed in pale blue light. Near the courtyard fountain, a small group of three or four students were

Laurel’s POVIt was a Tuesday evening, just past eight o'clock, and the penthouse was wrapped in its usual clinical silence.I sat at the small vanity in the corner of our master bedroom, applying a layer of night cream, trying to lose myself in the mindless rhythm of self-care. Leonard was in the adjacent bathroom, the muffled, steady roar of the shower serving as the background track to my evening. His phone sat on top of the mahogany dresser, resting face-up under the soft glow of the recessed lighting.I wasn't looking for anything. I had trained myself to stop looking, to accept the sterile boundaries of our arrangement. But then, the screen abruptly lit up. A sharp, metallic chime sliced through the quiet room.I glanced over, my fingers pausing on my cheek. An unknown number, lacking a name or a contact card, stretched across the lock screen. Beneath it, the preview text banner caught my eye.Unsaved number. Are you still stuck in New York, or are you coming back to play? I’m w

Laurel’s POVIt was past one in the morning when the low hum of the library door opening signaled his retreat. I was already in bed, propped against the pillows with a book I hadn't actually read a single line of, watching as Leonard entered the master suite. He moved with his usual quiet efficiency, shedding his watch, his silver-and-onyx cufflinks, and his tailored jacket without looking at me. He was a shadow moving through a room we shared out of pure obligation."Leonard," I spoke up, breaking the oppressive quiet, my voice was steady, but my heart was hammering against my ribs.He paused, his hands resting on the edge of the dresser, his back still turned to me. "It’s late, Laurel. I’ve had a demanding week.""We need to talk," I said, closing the book and setting it on the nightstand. With desperation and curiosity for answers laced with the strong urge to be seen I slid my legs out from under the duvet, my five-foot-eleven frame standing tall in the ice-blue silk nightgown as

  • BEAUTIFULLY UNFAITHFULLY    Chapter 8

Laurel’s POVThe atmosphere in the dining room was thick with a carefully orchestrated harmony. Under the soft, amber glow of the crystal chandelier, the table was set with the fine china, a silent, tactical choice on my part. Beautiful things demanded beautiful behavior. I had spent the afternoon preparing a classic roast chicken with rosemary and fingerling potatoes, filling the penthouse with a warm, domestic aroma that purposefully fought against the sterile silence of his absence.I sat at one end of the long mahogany table, wearing a simple, elegant emerald-green knit dress that clung softly to my five-foot-eleven frame, while Leonard sat at the other. He looked exactly as he always did after a major acquisition, immaculate, unbothered, and entirely commanding. The dark charcoal suit he wore was crisp, his silver-streaked hair perfectly styled. To anyone looking through the floor-to-ceiling windows, we were the picture of Upper East Side perfection. And for Lilibeth’s sake, I

Laurel’s POVThe scalding water eventually ran lukewarm, forcing me out of the sanctuary of the stall. I dried off mechanically, pulling a fresh, ice-blue silk nightgown over my damp skin. The fabric was light, a cruel mockery of the heavy warmth I actually craved. When I stepped back into the dark bedroom, the air-conditioned chill of the penthouse hit me immediately. I climbed into the massive, king-sized bed, sliding beneath the heavy duvet. Even though I was five-foot-eleven, tonight I felt microscopic, swallowed whole by the vast expanse of Egyptian cotton. I rolled onto my side, my back automatically turning to the empty space where Leonard was supposed to be sleeping. The frantic energy of the alcohol had finally begun to bottom out, leaving behind a hollow, exhausting sobriety. My muscles ached from the intensity of the release, but my mind was hyper-vigilant, spinning back to the toxic, elegant poison Amanda had fed me at the lounge.‘For all you know, he’s out there right n
