Damian stood there, his chest rising and falling at regular intervals. Benedict had just given him the most valuable gift—respect. It would have been enough.

But Damian wasn't done.

He faced around to Eliana's father, meeting him with even eyes. "One more thing, sir."

Benedict's brow furrowed. "Yes?"

"I would like to ask your permission to wed your daughter."

There was silence in the room. Even the clock on the wall ceased its ticking.

Damian's voice was deep but firm. "Not yet, not now. I haven't spoken to her yet. But I will. And when I do, I want to do it in the proper way—with dignity. With your consent."

Benedict looked at him for a very, very long time.

Then he stood up.

And for the very first time, he came around the desk—not as a CEO, not as the lion of the Thompson empire—but as a father.

“You’ve got guts,” Benedict said.

Damian gave a small, respectful nod. “Only when it comes to her.”

After a few tense seconds, Benedict placed a firm hand on his shoulder. “You better make i

The sunlight coming through the blinds the next morning felt almost alien to Jenny. It was as if an entirely different world had emerged—one she wasn't ready to enter yet, perhaps, but one that she needed to confront regardless. Her head ached from the drinking the night before, and when she sat up in bed, the full force of what had occurred seemed to brood over her like a cloud. She could feel the lingering shadows of Saben's presence beside her—his unspoken comfort, his calm hand in hers—yet now that the instant was gone, she did not know where they were. She looked over at the bench where Saben had slept, half hoping to see it vacant. But there he was, still snoring, his hand on the pillow beside him. His face was easy in sleep, no longer the stern, unreachable man of the office, but someone who appeared almost vulnerable, as if the night had mellowed him as well.Jenny's mind was knotted. What had happened last night? What was this. chemistry between them? It was too early to cons

The soft light of the streetlights outside the window filtered through to Jenny's apartment and cast long shadows throughout the room. The silence was oppressive, broken only by the soft hum of night outside. Jenny lay awake, her head still on the pillow, her body sore from the activities of the night before. She had never felt so exposed, so fragile.Saben had stuck by her word. But the weight of his presence beside her, the taut silence that threatened to bubble in her atmosphere, was near enough to suffocation. He had been so kind to her, so tender, but she couldn't deal with the whirlpool of emotion that churned now in her heart. She glared up at the ceiling, her hands tracing the edge of the blanket involuntarily."I never thought I'd be here," she breathed aloud.Saben moved in the shadows of the corner, as if he'd heard her. He didn't respond immediately, but the fact that she could even detect him breathing, steady and untroubled, made her feel more exposed. He was present. He

Surrounded by the quietness that clung to them, Jenny allowed herself to rest her head on Saben's shoulder, her breathing shallow and unregular. The drink fog still lingered, but it was clearing now substituted by something concrete, something darkened: the knowledge that someone, for everything that had happened, still existed.Saben could feel her unwind a fraction in his arms, and for the first time that night, he drew breath. He didn't know what tomorrow would be like if she'd keep pushing him away, if she'd deny this night existed but for now, he was content with this moment of quiet. A tenuous truce in the tempest. The city lights twinkled in the distance, casting a soft light over the streets, and Saben tightened his hold a bit closer, as if he was afraid she'd again slip through his fingers. He whispered into the blackness, having no way of knowing if she was aware to respond to the words."You're no longer alone, Jenny… not if I have anything to say about it."And though she

Jenny's equilibrium was in doubt, her eyesight dim as she staggered ahead. The alcohol still whirling in her mind, she had a floating sensation, a sense that the floor beneath her didn't exist. She was swept away in the veil of her feelings anger, hurt, confusion and before she could find her balance again, her legs gave way under her.Saben, following but one step behind, acted on instinct. His own hand pushed out, catching her before she hit the floor. She bounced against his chest, gasping in surprise. Her breath caught in her throat as she blinked up at him, attempting to process what had occurred. Her cheeks flushed, her hair disheveled falling across her eyes, but the look of vulnerability on her face was not one to be denied."Jenny!" Saben yelled out, a hue of alarm creeping into his tone. He wrapped his arms around her and drew her close to support her. "Are you alright?"She didn't answer right away. She clung to him for a second instead, hands grasping at his chest but not h

"I'm not the one who's going to make it right, Jenny," he told her softly, his eyes unflinching. "I can't turn back the clock. But I'm not going to leave you stuck here, like this. Not because of my own moral code, because of what I am. And I'm not going to let you drive away, drunk and by yourself."Jenny's face grew rigid to hit him again, but she restrained herself. She breathed in deeply, staring at him as if considering something in her mind. But whatever it was, it did not stop her from reaching a conclusion."You can't safeguard me, Saben," she whispered, her tone softer now, but still tinged with the pain of hurt. "No longer. You can't repair this. So you may as well leave."Saben paused for a moment, his own heart heavy with rejection as well. But something inside of him ripped wide open something that caused him to see that he couldn't just leave her like this."I'm not your hero," he said to her, his voice gruff but unshakeable. "But I'm not walking out on you, Jenny. I'm n

Saben said nothing as his words rested between them, bitter and unkind. He ached to say something, to explain, but the truth lingered between them like a fence too high to climb. He had gotten her into this, and now, despite all his attempts at rectifying things, he could not remember what was said.Jenny's expression was a storm of rage and hurt, her voice knives, and every word cutting a little deeper than the last. But just beneath the poison, Saben saw something else a flicker of vulnerability, a depth of pain she was desperately trying to conceal.Saben remained there, the tension between them thickening second by second. His chest hurt, and for an instant of sheer fear, he had no idea what to say. All those preparation speeches he'd practiced, all the pleading, the apologies now they sounded so inadequate, so worthless before her anger."I'm not the type of guy you believe I am," he panted, his voice heavy with grief. "I'm not your ex, Jenny. Don't lump us together like that. I'
