Zane

There is silence for what feels like a couple of minutes. Then, Adam strides towards me, and I see the anger in his eyes as he faces me.

“Alpha Zane, this is not your call to make. She is standing before the Council.” He gestures toward Katarina. My gaze shifts to her—she’s trying to hold herself together, but she looks terrified. I feel the urge to protect her rising in me again.

“Yes. And I brought her before the Council,” I say, pointing at my chest. “Do you even know who she is?”

“Damn right I do. She’s Katarina Penn, daughter of Augustine Penn, the leader of the wolf hunters. We have two wolves in the clinic, and I’ve been informed she’s the cause.”

I’m taken aback. He knows everything. Damn it! I wanted to reveal it myself. He needed to hear it from me. Now, his mind is set—and the rest of the Council’s too. The chances of convincing them otherwise are slim.

“So, tell us, Alpha,” he says, his arm sweeping toward the rest of the Council seated at the table. “Why the hell are

Katarina“Zane…” I start as he notices my nervousness immediately. “You can’t hold your art exhibition tomorrow.”“Why?” His brows furrow. “That’s impossible. The invites are already out. People have flown in from across the world. We’re going to make tons of money, and the wolf zone could use it.”“Please, you have to cancel it.” I stare at him intensely, needing him to listen.“Katarina, I can’t. And what’s this about?” He looks at me with growing concern.I’m struggling with myself—whether to tell him or not. I don’t want Dad to hurt Zane. I’m still a wolf hunter, so I’m stuck in the middle. I can’t let Zane die, but I can’t betray my father either.“Katarina, you’re nervous.”“No, I just… I just want to spend the day with you.” I make up an excuse.“We could spend the night together after the event.” He kisses my knuckles, trying to reassure me.“I know, but…”“There’s something more, isn’t there? What is it, Katarina? Tell me.”I take a deep breath, my heart pounding. “Please, ju

KatarinaI stretch my neck, turning it left and right, then stretch my arms and bend, trying to straighten my back. We’re sparring in combat class today. It’s exciting because I didn’t have anyone to practice with when I lived with Aunt Mary. Physicals are my best part of Wolf Academy. It’s a good way to brush up on the skills dad taught me.“Well, Luna Katarina, let’s see what you’ve got,” Bex mocks, challenging me, and I take up the challenge. I take my position, rolling my hands into fists, and we start the fight. She throws the first punch, and I duck. She keeps throwing punches, but I bend, swirl to the left, then to the right, avoiding every hit. I swiftly slide my leg under hers. She misses her step and falls to the ground.“And you were saying?” I tease, standing over her, her body now lying in the mud.“Ah!” she grunts in frustration, refusing my hand when I offer to help her up. “This isn’t over,” she mutters before storming off.I turn my gaze to Cyprian and Cassandra.“How

KatarinaThe tension in the room makes it so hard for me to breathe. I’m standing in front of the Wolf Council, and Zane is sitting with them too. All their angry gazes are tearing me apart because Dad escaped from the Fortress. This was all thanks to Cyprian and Cassandra, who helped me. They set the fire in the library as a distraction. We needed something important enough to the wolf clan to divert their attention just long enough for Cyprian to sneak Dad out of the Fortress and meet Francis, who was parked at a safe distance from the main gate. I don’t know how Cyprian managed to pull it off while I was in the library with Cassandra and still came back in time to cover it up. I’m grateful to him for getting Dad out—and to Cassandra too.The door opens, and Cole, the guard at Dad’s cell whom Cyprian knocked out, walks in.“Now we can start,” Adam says, and I swallow the lump in my throat.“Grand Alpha, Wolf Council,” Cole bows, honoring Zane and the other Alphas.“How did Augustine

Katarina“Yes, it’s spreading fast. Cyprian, Beta to Alpha Ethan, found it. Some of us rushed in and are trying to stop it, but it looks really dangerous.”“Okay, I should go check it out.”“What about—” Cole interrupts.“It’s fine,” Zane says firmly, cutting him off. He then leans in closer to me. “Katarina, I have to go. There’s a fire in the Academy’s library.”“A fire?” I feign surprise, pretending I don’t know it’s all part of the plan to help Dad escape.“Don’t worry about it. Just finish up here. I’ll be right back.” Zane kisses me, his lips pressing possessively against mine, completely disregarding my father as if I belong to him alone.“Okay,” I murmur, barely able to speak.“Cole, Katarina’s still inside. Keep an eye on her, but give her privacy,” Zane orders Cole, the guard outside, before turning to leave.“Of course, Alpha Zane,” Cole responds as Zane departs. As soon as Zane is out of sight, I turn back to Dad. “I’m going to get you out of here, Dad,” I whisper in his e

Katarina“You went crying to your friends, didn’t you?” Zane asks, his suspicious look softening into pity.I exhale deeply. I thought he was onto me. “Yeah. That’s what I did.”“Katarina, I know he’s your father. But he’s going to die, and you have to move on from him. You have me now,” he says, as though it’s easy to just stand by and watch my dad die without lifting a finger.“I’d like to see my dad.”“You know that’s not possible, Katarina.”“I know it’s not. But I’m asking, begging you to let me see my father.”“I can’t let you do that. Letting him live for another twenty-four hours is a privilege I gave you. I’m the Grand Alpha, for godsake, Katarina.”“I’m not asking the Grand Alpha. I’m asking my husband, my mate, to please allow me to see my dad. Please,” I hold his hand, my eyes pleading desperately as I watch the shock on his face when I call him my husband.“Fine,” he reluctantly agrees. “But it’s not going to be any longer than five minutes, and I’ll be watching him at al

Katarina I barely got any sleep last night. I’ve been trying to stay calm, not wanting Zane to realize that I’m losing my mind. The thought of losing Dad makes my heart race. Zane’s out, and I’m not sure when he’ll be back, but I need to act fast. There’s no way I’ll let them kill my dad—how could I? My mind is in complete chaos. I don’t know what to do; my life is a mess.Yesterday, Zane saved Dad. He didn’t kill him, and that got him into trouble. And now, he trusts me. Saving Dad will mean breaking that trust, and I don’t know if I can live with that. But I also can’t stand by and watch Dad die. I swore to myself when Mom died that I would protect him. I don’t want to hurt Zane or betray him more than I already have, but I feel like I don’t have a choice.I send a message to Francis: “My dad’s in trouble, and I need your help.”He responds: “What do you need?”That part, I’ll need to figure out. I blow out a breath. I need to get Dad out of wherever he is before it gets too late.

ZaneI turn on the shower, letting the water wash through my hair and down my skin, rinsing away the blood. It’s smeared on my knuckles, across my body. None of it is mine. Most of it belongs to Augustine, the rest to the other wolf hunters.Coming out of the shower, I spot Katarina by the window, curled up on the floor with her hands resting on her knees, lost in thought. I dry off quickly, put on a polo and shorts, then kneel beside her.“My Katarina,” I whisper, planting a kiss on her shoulder. She pulls away, shrugging me off.“Don’t touch me,” she says coldly. She stands and heads for the door, but I speed there before she can open it.“What’s this about, Katarina? Is it Augustine?” I ask, assuming her father is the reason for her sudden coldness. “I’ve never hidden my plans from you. You know how I feel about him. Augustine will die, Katarina.”“I thought…” She trails off but I know what she thought. “You thought what, Katarina?” I press, wanting her to say what I already know.

  • BITTEN BY THE ALPHA: ALPHA ZANE   CHAPTER 88: ZANE’S REVENGE

ZaneWe scatter through the woods, hiding in the darkness, waiting for our prey. We hear the sound of their footsteps, the rustling of leaves, and my wolves spring into action. They attack with rage, claws slashing at our enemies. Some sink their teeth into the wolf hunters’ flesh. My fully transformed wolves pounce, ripping at their throats. I hear the cocking of guns loaded with silver bullets, being shot at the wolves, and I swoop in to protect them. I follow the sound of the bullets and claw at the hunters responsible, snatching guns from their hands one by one, defending my wolves. I strike them with the butts of their own weapons. I’m faster and stronger, even against their firearms. I send them crashing to the ground as I take their weapons. The battle rages on, and I gather up all the guns, placing them in an open space before me. It’s my way of ensuring they can’t be used while my wolves finish the fight. Then I see him—Augustine—cocking his gun and pointing it directly at me

  • BITTEN BY THE ALPHA: ALPHA ZANE   CHAPTER 87: THE ATTACK TONIGHT

KatarinaI’ve been increasingly suspicious of Zane since he started making secret calls. Earlier, he snuck out of the room to answer a call from Adam, thinking I was asleep and wouldn’t notice. But I’ve been onto him. The werewolves are planning an attack, and Zane didn’t want me to know. I couldn’t risk him knowing that I overheard, so I played along. I can’t be mad at him. Of course, he doesn’t trust me. And he’s right—he shouldn’t.We just got back home, and our honeymoon is over. I wish we could have stayed longer than we did. Being alone with him in his beautiful lake house was an escape, one that made me forget about all the mountains between us. Now that we’re back, I don’t know what’s going to happen between us. The entire journey home was cold. He couldn’t even look at me, knowing he was lying to me.Zane strides off into his study and shuts the door without saying a word to me. I bet he’s off planning his attack. He still thinks I’m lost in the bliss of our honeymoon. Well,
