ELENA'S POV:

“Dimitri Volkov, do you accept Elena Rossi as your lawful wife..” The priest said, pausing to look at our faces.

My knees buckled, I held onto my wedding dress to steady myself. We were at the altar, standing side by side in a private chamber of some cathedral turned criminal sanctum.

He continued. “To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish until death do you part?”

All eyes turned to Dimitri's face, which was cold and devoid of any form of emotions whatsoever. I craned my neck too. My pulse thumping loudly in my ears.

Please say no. Please, just say no!

“I accept!”

My heart slammed against my ribs, I looked away.

How could all this be happening?

I wish I could just vanish from this place, this marriage, everything!

How could Dad even do this to me!

“Elena Rossi..”

I looked up.

The priest stared at me for one sad second, before he cleared his throat and began the vows.

“Do you accept Dimitri Volkov, as your lawful husband..”

My nails dug into my palms, as I clenched my fist. No please, I wouldn't.

I will never!

“To have and to hold..”

My throat constricted.

“from this day forward, for better or for worse,”

I reached out one hand to steady my pounding heart.

“for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish until death do you part?”

I swallowed the dry lump in my throat, suddenly feeling all the eyes in the room turned to me.

If I say no.. I can still escape this right?

I dragged in a deep ragged breath.

Shut up heart!

Stop!

I dug my nails deeper into my palm.

“Elena Rossi..” The priest called again, I looked up.

From the side I could feel Dimitri's cold gunmetal gray eyes watching me silently, pinning me in place.

“Elena—”

“No!” I said stubbornly before the priest could call out again. “I do not accept!”

“But that's..” The priest began and trailed off, swallowing whatever he was going to say as my father drew closer.

I clenched my fist tightly, mustering all my courage and self will at once.

“I do not want to be part of this marriage, I'll not accept this man as my husband.”

“You have to!” My father snapped, he was just inches from us now.

Dimitri wasn't saying anything, but I could already feel him coldly assessing me from the side.

“I wouldn't!” I fought back, my cheeks reddening.

Father's face turned furious and before I knew it, he lifted his hand and flung it towards me.

Shit!

I closed my eyes. Bracing myself for the stinging pain that would soon be on my left cheek.

But after almost three seconds and nothing happened.

I hesitantly opened my eyes, slowly.

And then I gasped.

The scene before me had never happened before. Not ever!

Dimitri was holding Father's hands in mid air and frowning down at him.

“She's mine.” He said coldly. Father's face turned pale.

“If I think she needs punishment, I'll do it myself.”

“But..” Father began protesting.

“Enough!” Dimitri cut him off, letting go of his hands.

Father immediately swallowed whatever he wanted to say like an obedient boy.

He turned to me, his gray eyes boring into mine. I gulped. His hands dove under his jacket, as he reached for something.

I knew just what that was.

“I accept!” I burst out immediately.

His hands stopped halfway and a tiny smile curled up his face.

“I'll be your wife, alright?”

He chuckled and pulled out a white handkerchief from his jacket to wipe his face.

My heart fell—

Did I just get fooled in to thinking he had a gun on him, when all along it was just a handkerchief?

A stupid fucking handkerchief?

“That's settled then, may we proceed.” The priest called out from behind him.

He turned around and wheeled back to my side, facing the priest with a smug smile on his face. “Of course you can proceed.”

My father turned back and went to his seat, red-faced.

“Now, let's move on with the vows, please they're written on your pamphlet.” The priest said.

I swallowed hard, as I lifted the pamphlet up with shaky hands.

“The couple shall turn to face each other.”

My muscles twitched and tensed, I turned slowly, to face Dimitri.

The smile was gone from his face, leaving the usual coldness of a metal weapon. A gun.

A jolt hit me in the gut, as another sickening thought hit me.

This man was going to be my husband!

I was going to spend the rest of my life with this monster, this cold blooded killer who saw people as nothing but litter.

Oh, God! This couldn't be happening.

“The groom shall take vows first.”

My eyes locked on his face, a jagged scar ran down his temple to jawline, his skin was tanned, his nose was broken too.

Typical!

"I, Dimitri Volkov…” He began.

A knot knitted in my stomach and I suddenly had the strange urge to throw up!

Brace up, Elena!

“Take you,” He paused as he reached my name, he tilted his head up to look at me and then he said it. “Elena Rossi to be my wife. I promise to be faithful to you, in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, to love you and to honor you all the days of my life.”

I gulped.

“The bride shall proceed with the vows.”

My hands shook as I gripped the pamphlet.

I don't deserve this

I don't!

“I, er.. Elena Rossi..” I choked out, stuttering. My throat was constricting making it difficult for me to breathe. I placed one hand on my chest, while trying to drag in the stale, dust infested air in the cathedral.

“Take you, Dimitri Volkov!”

Shut up heart! Stop fussing please!

My palms were sweaty, shaking.

“To be my husband. I promise to be faithful to you, in good times and in bad. In sickness and in health, to love you and to honor you all the days of my life.” I finally said bitterly.

“The vows have been made to seal this marriage, it is time for the rings to be exchanged to properly seal this union.” The priest said, producing a small case.

He drew closer and flipped it open.

Two silver rings glistened back at us.

I bit the inside of my cheek, biting back the tears stinging beneath my eyes threatening to force their way out.

The priest began his long speech again. “The ring is a symbol of eternity — it has no beginning and no end. It is a symbol of the love you share. As you place this ring on your partner's finger, repeat after me”

Dimitri reached out for my hands and picked one of the rings.

I hesitated for two seconds before slipping my hands in to his.

The priest began. “With this ring, I wed you.”

“With this ring, I wed you.” Dimitri repeated.

“Wear it as a symbol of my love and commitment, now and forever."

“Wear it as a symbol of my love and commitment, now and forever.” He said softly.

And slid the ring in.

"You may now kiss the bride," the priest announced.

What?

My head snapped to the priest.

“But I haven't given him my ring.” I said in protest.

“You don't need to.” Dimitri said, leaning closer to me slowly, our faces merely inches apart. His cold eyes held mine, and in that moment I understood — nothing about this marriage would ever be on my terms. Not even this.

ELENA'S POV"You wish to study in an institution, Mrs. Volkov, why?"—was saying because my husband brought me here, too much of a reply to give? Maybe not.I cleared my throat. "I am a natural law enthusiast," I said and glanced at Dimitri who was seated on the only chair in the room. Dimitri was no one you could pick out of a crowd, until you noticed the shrewd, rock hard eyes, and his immobile face and long jagged scar. Hiding my nervousness, I turned my attention back to the Registrar, who was nodding thoughtfully at something on his computer. He looked up after a minute. "We'll have all your documents processed and sent over to you by mail, Mrs. Volkov. Thank you for considering our University."My heart leaped. "Just like that?"The Registrar chuckled softly and glanced briefly at my husband — sorry, Dimitri — well, he was my husband anyway. The look in his eyes made me understand almost immediately. Dimitri had done some things behind the scenes to get me into the school. Th

  • BLOOD AND VOWS   Mine!

DIMITRI'S POV: I held the car door for her and smiled softly as she walked in with barely a nod in my direction. Elena Volkov. The name suited her just right even though she'd never want to admit to anyone, she loved it. Really loved it. I climbed into my side of the car and started it up, with a tug at the handgears, I reversed the automobile out of my garage and eased it towards the open gate and road beyond. "Where is this school you're taking me?" She asked, three minutes into the ride. "It's in the outskirts of town, The Chicago Central University." I replied, glancing briefly at her. Her face was so innocent and beautifully pure that made me want to reach out and cradle it with my palms. She was an angel. Matteo was right. Elena was fucking beautiful. "I would appreciate it if you don't look at me like that." She snapped, turning her face away to the window. I dropped one hand off the steering wheel, and reached for her hands with it. The contact shocked her,

ELENA'S POV:When I woke up the next morning, Dimitri was gone. His side of bed lay crumpled and there was no sign of him even in the bathroom or anywhere else in the room. When I came downstairs later, the scent of coffee and something even sweeter immediately made me hurry down to the dinning room, But Dimitri wasn't there.Pans were clanking in the kitchen and as I turned the corner, I found a small, plump woman who looked old enough to be my Grandma at the stove, making pancakes. Her dark grey hair was secured with a hairnet and Umberto was perched on a stool at the bar attached to the kitchen island, a cup of coffee in front of him. He turned when I approached. His eyes took in my nightgown in one look before he turned, jerking his head away to the opposite direction. What the heck! The woman turned to face me, her face breaking into a smile. “You must be Elena, the new mistress.” She said.I managed a small smile. “Yes, I am.”She nodded. “ I'm Marianna. ELENA'S POV:The relaxation I'd felt during the car ride evaporated the moment, Dimitri and I returned to the towering, imposing mansion.I went into the bathroom immediately. I stepped into the bedroom and took my time getting ready before I returned.Dimitri's eyes took in my long dark satin gown. It reached my calves but had a slit that went up to my thighs. The desire in his eyes made my stomach churn in alarm.I looked away before his eyes could make me forget what I had been thinking about all evening.“I’ll have Yvvette prepare something for you, so you don't get hungover.” He said finally, laughing softly at me and he pushed off from the armchair he was sitting in and walked past me into the bathroom.“I don't want anything.” I called after him, before making my way towards the window and busied myself with watching the nightly skyline. I was almost as nervous as that first night. This was the first time in days that we were sharing the same space without tension pulling us ap

  • BLOOD AND VOWS   Our Joint Mess!

ELENA'S POV:Hating someone feels disturbingly similar to being in love with them. In the past week, I managed to compare what I felt for Dimitri, to what I was expected to feel for him and my observation was just messed up.Love and hate are visceral. My stomach turns and twists at the thought of Dimitri. The heart in my chest beats heavy and bright, nearly visible through my flesh and clothes and I'm on the brink of fight or flight. My appetite and sleep are shredded.Every interaction spikes my blood with a dangerous kind of adrenaline. The sheer terror of him scares me. But that wasn't anymore, well— I was going to turn that fucking tide around. The car slowed down in front of an Asian Restaurant on the outskirts of town. Umberto rushed out to help me hold the door but I beat him to it, before he could run over.He looked uneasily at me then back at the restaurant I was heading for, then with another fluid swift motion, he took out a handkerchief and wiped his face helplessly.

  • BLOOD AND VOWS   Firm Resolve

ELENA'S POV:"So when you ask me if I feel like I have immense power, dear wife. My answer is yes. I want to possess things and I want things to go my way, I am a mob boss after all." He said, pausing to laugh at the last word like it was a dry joke, before continuing. "And whatever you think of me as. Your opinion wouldn't change anything about what I do or how I do it."He smiled at me, but again the smile didn't touch his eyes."Now if you'll stop gaping and eat your food. I think we can make progress with our discussion." He pointed out.It was only then I realized I hadn't been eating, I dropped the fork back on the plate with a clatter and reached for the glass of orange juice Yvette had brought when she came in earlier.I swallowed hard before gulping down the juice. The temperature in the room was rising or maybe it was just me. I wanted desperately to pull back my seat and scurry off the table but for the first time in a long while, I found myself doing just the opposite. The

ELENA'S POV:I scowled in frustration at my reflection in the mirror. My figure had shrunken considerably from constant starvation and crying indoors.
