Aldric turned to look at Lysandra, and for a moment, the two ancient beings locked eyes in a wordless exchange.

"Of course," Aldric agreed. "We wouldn't expect an immediate answer. The Fae Court can be patient when the stakes are this high."

He moved back toward the chair and retrieved something from his robes.....a crystal pendant attached to a delicate silver chain. It glowed with soft blue light, pulsing like a heartbeat.

"This is a sigil of House Starwhisper," Aldric said, holding it out to

Silence."You have kept them safe thus far," Garrett continued, gently. "I do not doubt it. You and your mates have done every thing that love and loyalty could ask. But love, Luna, is not always enough." His voice sank. "Three months ago, a Breeder's Awakening tore across the training field of Shadowmere. A tornado of raw power, in the middle of a pack house. It destroyed an acre of ground. It shook the wards. By the grace of the Goddess, no one died.""No one did," said Alaric, in a flat, cold voice."By the grace of the Goddess," Garrett repeated, as though Alaric hadn't spoken. "And since then? I am told that flowers bloom in the dead of winter. That the very soil of Shadowmere bends toward its Luna. That a child of the Fae sits at her council, and that she wears the sigil of a Fae house around her neck." His gaze dropped, deliberately, to the crystal pendant. "I do not say these things to accuse. I say them because they are true. Because every Alpha in this bowl has heard them. A

"Working them how?""Dinner. Wine. Kind words. A great deal of concern for the nation." His beard twitched. "He is very good at concern.""And the others?""Divided." He lowered his voice. "A third are ours. A third are his. A third are waiting to see who speaks best."Elara nodded slowly. "Then I'd better speak well.""You will.""I'm not sure I'll be able to stand for much of it.""Then sit, Luna." He smiled, grave and fierce. "No one will think the less of you. A Queen may sit."She almost laughed. "I'm not a queen.""No?" His eyebrow rose. "Look around you."She looked. At the banners. At the faces. At the three huge, protective figures at her sides, each radiating a quiet, potent menace that had kept the nearest rows of wolves carefully quiet. At the high priestess, the ancient Fae, the Alphas ranged in a row. At the great grey Stone, still humming faintly under her feet.Well, she thought. Perhaps a little.***There were others. She saw them as she climbed to the seat that had

They did not ride to the Stone.Meredith had forbidden it, flatly, in terms that left no room for debate. A day's journey over rough northern roads, jolting in a wagon, with three cubs pressing on her ribs and her back aching like an old wound? The high priestess would sooner have thrown herself off the north tower. So at dawn on the morning of the Gathering, with the mist still lying heavy in the courtyard, Lysandra stepped out into the garden, drew a slow breath, and began to walk. She walked along the terrace and through the rose arbor, and the air parted in front of her. It did not tear, the way the portals to Luminara did. It unfolded, soft as silk, into a long, green, dew-bright path that wound away between the trees and disappeared into a light that did not belong to any dawn Elara had ever seen."A walking road," Lysandra said. "Fae-made. It does not cross the veil, and it will not harm her. It will take us no longer than a good stroll." She glanced back over her shoulder, and

The words fell like a stone.Lysandra took a step forward. "Cassian.....""Twenty years ago." His voice was low and raw. "Before any of you. I was shown the register of the Old Court by the one who taught me to hate you. They said that the line was dying, that the daughters would be the last, that Auriel had thrown away the one thing that could save us. They said that a hybrid child would be the end of the old blood. I believed it." He swallowed. "I believed it for twenty years.""And now?""Now I have seen the pages that were cut." His grey eyes were bright and bleak. "I have seen what they were hiding. And I know that I was never the hand. Only the glove.""Whose hand?" said Kieran, in a low, deadly growl."I cannot say.""You can't or you won't?""Both." Cassian turned his head, and looked directly at the eldest of the Alpha Kings. "If I could say the name, I would have said it a hundred times. I would have screamed it from the roof of Luminara." His mouth twisted. "I have tried. E

For the first time, Cassian paused. It was a very small pause. Barely a breath. But Elara saw something move behind his cool grey eyes, something quick and bright, like a fish turning in a dark pond."No," he said. The water did not stir.A long, low exhale swept the Council. Kieran swore under his breath. Elara sat very still, her heart pounding, her palm pressed to the great round weight of her stomach. Under her hand, one of the cubs shifted."The Silverbowl does not lie," said the seer, softly."No," Cassian agreed. "It does not.""There are further questions," said Aldric. He rose, and stepped to the edge of the table, and stood with his hands folded in front of him, looking at Cassian with an expression that Elara could not entirely read."You have denied the carving, the wards, the feather, and the log. The water has sustained you. We will accept, for the moment, that these acts were not committed by your hand." His voice sharpened. "I will now ask you what the Council has been

The Fae came to Shadowmere at dusk.It was Aldric's doing. He had argued the point before the Council for two days, and in the end he had won it on a single, unanswerable fact: the Breeder was nine days from her term, and no healer in Luminara would sign a writ permitting her to cross the veil. If the Court wished to question Cassian Thornwood before the Gathering, it would have to bring the questioning to her.So the great hall of the northern pack house, which had hosted Alphas and witches and wizards and the strange ancient things of the Threshold, now played host to the Fae Grand Council in full session.Elara watched them arrive from the dais. They came through the portal gate in a long, silent procession, twenty-three robed figures in grey and silver and deep midnight blue, with Aldric at their head. Lyanna followed him, warm-eyed and straight-backed, with Theron a pace behind. Behind them walked three tall, pale figures in white, their faces veiled to the lips, each carrying a

The words hung in the air like a death sentence.Elara's lungs forgot how to work."What?" she managed."The mate bond," Kieran said from behind Alaric. He sounded almost... apologetic? "When you touched me....when the bond snapped into place....it bound you to all three of us. You're our mate, Ela
