Chapter 12

I was silent for a long while, and I eventually withdrew my hand from Quentin's grasp and told him, "I didn't leave you because you doted on Kelly—I left because you repeatedly neglected me, pushing me aside.

"And whenever a decision came down between me and Kelly, you'd take her side without hesitation. That's what broke my heart.

"There's no changing the things you did to hurt me, even if you've dumped her now. I've built a new life and no longer want to be bound by the past."

My tone was cold and resolute, and despair immediately showed on Quentin's face.

The light of hope in his eyes faded right then, and he suddenly seemed completely drained.

His lips trembled as he clearly wanted to say more, but I sighed and turned to leave, reluctant to listen to any more of it.

"Jo, wait!"
