Chapter 1

Author: Jasmine Flower
When I was six months pregnant, I was visiting the hospital to get my prenatal checkup results when I ran into my husband, Quentin Smith.

He was accompanying a woman for her prenatal checkup—she was his childhood friend, Kelly Wallace.

"Quentin, won't your wife mind?" she asked with a hint of distress.

"Don't worry, she'll never find out. Even if she does, she wouldn't dare do anything." Quentin smiled, taking Kelly's hand and squeezing it.

Kelly remained anxious. "But she's your wife after all. I'm afraid she'll get upset if she knows…"

"I'll just make sure she never finds out," Quentin replied, shrugging. "I would've told her in the first place, but she's been emotionally unstable lately, and you're pregnant, so I can't let her cause you any trouble. If she dares to cause trouble, I'll just have to divorce her!"

Hearing those words left my heart broken.

Whipping out my phone, I called my father whom I hadn't spoken to in a while, telling him as soon as he answered, "Dad, I want to go home."

My father was delighted nonetheless. "I guess you've finally figured it all out, sweetie. Don't worry—you're always welcomed home. And no matter what happens, your mom and I will always have your back."

After hanging up, I remembered that I had asked Quentin to come with me to my prenatal checkup when I left the house earlier this morning, but he said he had something else to do.

As it turned out, he was accompanying Kelly for her prenatal checkup instead.

In fact, I was already six months pregnant, but not once did he come to the hospital with me.

On the other hand, Quentin had been meeting Kelly frequently after she broke off her engagement a few months ago and returned to the city.

In fact, he was always there to be at her beck and call.

I tried to get through to Quentin, reasoning that if he didn't love me anymore and had fallen in love with someone else, we could get a divorce.

He simply snorted. "Kelly has just broken off her engagement—she's in a bad mood, and she's pregnant on top of that. As a friend, shouldn't I support her? We've known each other for years, and I have a moral obligation to help!"

I was left staring at him in disbelief. "Friend? What kind of friend meets every day of the week and is always ready to help at every second?"

He promptly snapped at me, "Don't push it, Jolin! Kelly's going through a difficult time and needs help! Can't you stop being so unreasonable? You're making a mountain out of a molehill!"

At first, I was really convinced that Kelly's baby wasn't Quentin's, because she was already pregnant when she returned to the city a few months ago.

I tried to be indirect as I probed Quentin on who the father was, but Quentin would either brush it off or snap at me, telling me not to ask too many questions.

When he realized he overreacted, he'd just tell me again and again that he and Kelly were really just friends—that I shouldn't let my imagination run wild.

His sincerity had once convinced me that he was just being kind to Kelly—that they really were just friends, and I was the only one he loved.

But now, seeing the way they were pressing against each other, I finally understood that Kelly's child was his.

Even my own pregnancy was just a smokescreen to hide the real father of Kelly's baby.

I certainly didn't miss the flicker of glee in Kelly's eyes when Quentin threatened to divorce me if I didn't submit, but she remained distressed, as if blaming herself.

"No!" she cried. "You can't let your marriage fall apart because of me… If only my fiance didn't call off our engagement, then none of this would've happened. I wouldn't have survived with you, y'know… There were suddenly so many problems as soon as I came back."

With that, she started sobbing like a classical damsel in distress, while my own husband was the gentleman who would ease her troubles.

Patting her back, Quentin's voice was soft as he comforted her. "It's alright—no matter what happens, I'll always be there for you. When we were kids, if it weren't for you..."

He trailed off for a moment but soon continued earnestly, "Anyway, I'm helping you and taking care of you because it's what I should do. As for Jolin, she's my wife and she should be more understanding about what I'm doing. So what if she finds out? I'm on your side no matter what happens."

My heart hurt even as I watched them frolic, with tears flowing down my cheeks.

I hence told myself that it was just a week until my divorce papers would be finalized, and I'd be gone from this city forever in two—and finally be rid of them.

I was silent for a long while, and I eventually withdrew my hand from Quentin's grasp and told him, "I didn't leave you because you doted on Kelly—I left because you repeatedly neglected me, pushing me aside."And whenever a decision came down between me and Kelly, you'd take her side without hesitation. That's what broke my heart."There's no changing the things you did to hurt me, even if you've dumped her now. I've built a new life and no longer want to be bound by the past."My tone was cold and resolute, and despair immediately showed on Quentin's face. The light of hope in his eyes faded right then, and he suddenly seemed completely drained. His lips trembled as he clearly wanted to say more, but I sighed and turned to leave, reluctant to listen to any more of it."Jo, wait!" Quentin called out to me, refusing to give up. "Can I come again to visit our daughter?"I stopped and turned to look at him, and I decided I couldn't bear having my sweet, innocent Bonnie grow up w

Meanwhile, I was stretching my back and heading outside my office, having just finished a transnational video conference. My pace quickened before I knew it, remembering that my daughter Bonnie was waiting back home.Still, I noticed a familiar face just as I arrived downstairs. It was Quentin. He appeared haggard, his eyes sunken and his jawline thick with stubble.Even so, his eyes lit up as soon as he saw me, and he ran toward me excitedly as he exclaimed, "Jo! I finally found you!"He was also reaching out to take my hands, but I avoided his touch just then, glaring at him coolly and my tone distant. "What are you doing here, Quentin? What do you want?"Quentin's smile stiffened from my coldness, and he looked at me as if he was hurt, his voice cracked as he asked, "Jo, why did you leave me? Don't you know how much I've missed you?"I inhaled deeply to fight back the storm raging in my heart before holding his gaze and speaking slowly and clearly, "Quentin, I left you beca

Kelly was left clutching her cheek in utter disbelief. "How could you do this?! How could you bring yourself to hurt me?! You said you care about me the most! I know you love me very much!"Quentin laughed icily despite his rage before bellowing, "You're really evil, Kelly! I was just helping you because your father saved my life—you were always just a younger sister to me at best. I never had romantic feelings for you, so stop flattering yourself!"Kelly frowned and was hysterical when she screamed, "No! That's impossible! You love me, Quen, and you're the father of my child!"Sobbing, she grabbed his leg and begged, "Please, you promised that you'll be a father to my child. Just don't leave me, okay?"Quentin simply kicked her away, his expression cold. "Quit dreaming already! I lost my daughter and Jo because of you! All I want is for you to disappear!"Even as Kelly collapsed in despair, she realized that begging wasn't working and turned to hysterics. "Quit trying to be goody

Meanwhile, Quentin's life became endlessly miserable. After I left, he finally realized how much he had neglected me.But now, our once warm and happy home was completely devoid of my presence—the large house felt too quiet whenever he returned home, but he couldn't see me tending to housework like a busy bee.As such, Quentin began searching everywhere for me, calling in every favor. But he got nothing. His mind began to become muddled, unable to find his focus at work as his appearance grew haggard by the day.Kelly watched as he rotted, her envy eating at her.She presumed she would become the lady of the house after I left, but Quentin simply wasn't getting over me.One day, when he returned home from work, he found her in our bedroom. She was standing in front of a mirror, having put on my sleeping gown and my perfume with a blissful, sweet smile.Hearing the door open, she turned and beamed when she saw Quentin. "Oh, you're home, Quentin! I missed you so much…"Before

Soon after I disembarked, I found my mother searching the crowd anxiously. Her hair had turned fully white, making her look much older. As she saw me, tears streamed down her face as she rushed over and hugged me fiercely."Jo… you're finally home."My nose felt runny, and my tears nearly gushed out as my father had come too.He smiled, but he was clearly fighting back tears too. "As long as you're home, Jo. Everything's going to be alright.""Mom… Dad, I'm home." I hugged both of them as tight as I could, tears streaming down my face.It had been three years since I last saw them—I had cut ties from them, traveling to that faraway city just to be with Quentin.Even so, they didn't complain even though I was returning as a single mother, and my mother was still hugging me and gently tousling my hair."It's alright, Jo," she assured me with her soft voice. "It's okay for your baby to live with us without her father. We'll take good care of her from now on. You have us—no one wi

I woke up to the sharp scent of disinfectant filling my nostrils.I jerked up, instinctively reaching out to feel my stomach, and was left thunderstruck when I felt flatness. My baby! Where was my baby?!Even as my face turned pale, and I was about to get out of bed, a nurse hurried into the room toward me, handing a tiny bundle into my arms.My fingers were trembling as I looked down, my heart calming when I saw my baby's sweet little face.-Meanwhile, Quentin was pacing around restlessly in another end of the hospital after rushing Kelly over—the sight of me collapsing on the floor and crying out in pain seemed to echo in his mind. There was a dull ache in his heart, the sense of foreboding only growing stronger as my tear- covered face was all he could think about.A trace of guilt would show on his face as he vividly remembered the way I fell so violently and got burned. And I was pregnant too, but he simply walked away despite my clear distress.Even so, whenever he re
