I felt something soft gently tap on my cheeks, followed by small hot breaths on my skin that smelled of orange juice.

“Ace, you mustn’t do that. Please sit,” a woman’s voice came from somewhere in the background.

I struggled to open my eyes as I still felt a slight throb on my forehead. The room was dimly lit, with Grace standing by the doorway.

Beneath me, the beddings were ridiculously soft; it was the kind of luxury that belonged to expensive showrooms and not a girl who just passed out on her first day of work.

As I tried to sit up, Grace suddenly walked up to me, using her hands to support my shoulders.

“How are you feeling, miss?” She asked, looking me up and down.

“Just a slight headache…” I mumbled, squinting my eyes a little. Everything felt like it was spinning.

“Here”

She held out a glass of water, and I gulped it down in one go as if my life depended on it.

“You fainted on your way here. Luckily, the doctor was around, so attending to you was swift,” she stated.

A doctor? I felt my stomach churn.

Just... what did I do? First day of a babysitting job, and fainting on the same job is not a good way to start.

I cleared my throat. “Thank you. Uhmm, what about Mr Sterling?”

Wait…

Why am I even asking about him?

“He stepped out shortly but requested you be in the best state before proceeding with anything else.”

I nodded, my hand instinctively patting the bed, trying to find my phone. My mind was racing through excuses, wondering if he had seen me on the floor, or if i had been a crumbled heap for the staff to deal with.

“If that will be all, I have other matters I need to attend to. Ace is seated beside you. Let me know once you are set to leave.”

I snapped my head to my left. I had almost forgotten about the poking. There he was, sitting in a small corner, still clutching that same worn teddy bear from last time.

“Hiiiii little man,” I said, forcing a smile, despite the pulse in my head getting stronger. “Come over here.”

Ace didn’t move at first. He stared at me for a second before shuffling towards the bed, but did not stand close enough.

“How are you?”

He nods, still searching my face with a level of curiosity I have never seen before on a child.

“I am glad you are in a much better mood today. You spoke to your teddy, didn’t you?

He peeled his gaze away from me to the small stuffed bear in his hands before looking back up, nodding slowly.

“Great!” I cheered, “What do you want to do today?”

***************

Once I was sure Ace was tucked away in his room, I glanced at my phone, and I felt my heart skip a bit

7:30 pm.

I shouldn’t be worried, but my aunt, for some reason, finds me staying anything past 8 pm as a problem. If I leave now, I might just meet up.

I grabbed my bag, nearly tripping over my own feet in my haste to reach the door.

“You are leaving?” Grace's voice caught me just as I was about to open the main door.

“Ah…yes. Sorry, I forgot to tell you, but I really should get going now.”

“But Mr. Sterling isn’t back yet. Shouldn’t you wait for him to arrive first?” she said, her brows narrowed slightly.

“I honestly would love to, but I can’t. Ace is already in bed. I fed him the meal you made,” I replied, pleading with my eyes for her to let me go.

She watched me for a bit, her expression unreadable. For a second, I thought she might insist I stay, but she gave a stiff, small nod.

“Very well then. Goodnight”

Mr. Sterling's mansion sat in a gated neighborhood tucked away deep by surrounding trees in a private area. With very few houses nearby and worse, no cars were driving by.

It was unnervingly quiet.

Getting a cab was going to be difficult now. I walked for what felt like 30 minutes before I spotted a cab nearby, just before a huge storefront.

I ran a little to get close to the car. Just when I was about to open the back door, my phone buzzed inside my bag, and I rushed to answer without looking at who was calling.

“Hello..” I gasped for breath

“Where are you?” The deep voice asked. But I recognized the owner right away.

“At th…”

“Hey! Are you getting in or what?” The cab driver interrupted, leaning over the passenger seat, to glare at me through the window. “I don’t have all night, lady.”

“Stay where you are,” Mr Sterling ordered, leaving no room for argument. “I will meet you in 5.”

LiviaA sleek dark car rolled to a smooth stop in front of me as the windows slid down with a motorized hiss.“Get in,” Prof. Sterling said. Every fibre in me wanted to protest, but I felt it wasn’t going to be a smart move. I climbed to the passenger seat, and the engine roared as it entered the street again, turning towards the highway. His focus was entirely on the road with one hand resting casually on the steering wheel. He typed something on the small screen of the dashboard sleek interface and what looked like a holographic map with a blue arrow appeared. The drive was silent as I stared outside the window, not knowing what else to do. I should probably thank him for how his doctor treated me today. But the words stuck in my throat tangled with the sheer intimidation of his presence. “How do you feel now?” I heard him ask. His gaze remained fixed forward on the road.I blinked before clearing my throat a bit to speak, “I am fine now.”This definitely looks like a good tim

Livia “I am totally in for it, babe!” Roxy squealed, giving Ryan a kiss on the cheek and blushing so hard she looked like a teenage girl sitting with her crush. I stared out the window of the car as everything outside became a rushed blur of houses and green trees. The events of the previous day still tugged heavily in my mind, dragging me back to that moment over and over again. I didn’t sleep a wink last night because every time I closed my eyes, I saw his face.I shouldn’t have said what I said. I definitely shouldn’t have stopped Ace right at that moment. What is wrong with me? Why did I even do that? I gave a long, tired sigh, the kind that feels like it’s pulling air from your very soul. It will be a miracle if I am still hired.“Something wrong?” I heard Roxy ask. Her face turned back to face me“Oh... no, it’s nothing. Just tired,” “You have been deathly quiet, and it is unlike you.” She countered“Am I that much of a talker?” I asked with a small, forced chuckle that fel

Ronan“Wait here,” I said before moving towards the staircase. My shoes click on the floor, a sound that mirrored the ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall. Dealing with Ace shouldn't be this difficult, yet every interaction felt like navigating a minefield.I walked towards his room and knock briefly before opening it. He gets pretty startled for no reason, so I try to knock in advance to prevent this from happening. Well, that’s what the doctor said. "Sensory sensitivity," they called it. To me, it just felt like my own son was allergic to my presence.I opened the door and scan the room briefly but I don’t see him.The bed is perfectly made and the pillows are undisturbed. His toy chest is closed. The room is a museum of a childhood that isn't being lived. This instantly sends worry in my spine and I decide to call out.“Ace?”Nothing. Not even the rustle of sheets.I call 3 more times, searching every nook and cranny of his room, but he seems to be nowhere. I check under

Livia"You should have seen your face, Liv. You looked like you had just seen a ghost...no—ten ghosts!"The laughter of the red-haired girl echoed around me, a sound deep and guttural enough to cause a few of the students who were still there to glance in our direction. But I wasn't looking in Roxy's direction. I couldn't help the cold chill that seemed to have seeped into my bones."That wasn't funny, Roxy. Not at all," I stated, crossing my arms over my chest as if trying to hide from her words. She raised both hands in mock surrender while giving out another burst of laughter, "Alright, alright...I'm sorry..." I just stared at her, my jaw tight. I wasn't just annoyed; I was unsettled. There was a darkness in the lines she recited. “Why would you even say things like that? Where did that come from?”"C'mon, Liv, relax. Live a little!" she stepped closer, and her tone softened. "So the deal is...Well, I applied to this prestigious academy for acting, and...""What acting? When did

  • Babysitting My Professor’s Son   CHAPTER 5

Livia"W.... what?" I choked out.He lifted an eyebrow, leaning back into his leather chair, and waited for my answer with an unnervingly calm composure. Who even asks questions like that from their employee? This was incredibly awkward for me. I am hired to watch a child, not to provide a detailed report of my dating life."I don't," came out sharper than intended, my hands squeezed the handle of my purse. His face never showed even a flicker of reaction. On the contrary, he leaned forward in his seat, piercing me with his eyes. “Remember what I mentioned, about distractions… I mean it. Do let me know when you have one.”The dismissal was instantaneous. He said it while turning away to the stack of documents on his table, effectively erasing me from his presence. *********** The kitchen was filled with the steam of boiling pasta and the even more suffocating presence of my family. I waited until the clinking of forks on plates was the only thing I could hear before opening my mou
