Chapter 1

Chad's POV

My wife, Shelly Fuller, picked up the disciplinary notices and paused. Then, she said with an amused smile, "Since it didn't snow today, you embarrassed yourself at the TV station. Is this why you're taking it out on me?"

"I said I'm serious. I want a divorce," I said with emphasis.

When she heard my unusual tone, her malicious smile gradually froze on her face. Even the housekeeper serving tea didn't dare move.

A few seconds later, Shelly broke the silence with a sneer. "Chad, I thought you were used to it by now. You don't want what happened three years ago to repeat itself, do you?"

I blankly recalled what happened three years ago.

On the large screens across Haddon, I was reporting that the weather would be clear throughout the city, reminding residents to apply sunscreen before going out. Yet, Shelly spent a fortune to arrange artificial rain just for a male escort at a nightclub.

Dark clouds gathered overhead, and I became the most pathetic weather presenter in Haddon. I was so badly scolded by my boss that I couldn't even face him. I even received the first disciplinary notice of my career.

That time, I made a huge scene. I stormed into the bar with a bottle in hand and smashed it over the male escort's head.

Shelly simply lounged on the sofa, quietly watching as I went ballistic.

When I learned that my mother, Helen Upton, who was on her way to comfort me, had been in a car accident and would be paralyzed for the rest of her life, I broke down and became hysterical.

Shelly calmly told me, "As my husband, you need to be patient. You didn't understand before, but sometimes, one lesson is all it takes for you to learn."

I opened my mouth, but no words came out. Everything that happened in the past made my heart bleed every day.

When she saw that I remained silent, she softened her tone and pointed at the piles of gift bags on the coffee table. "Good to see that you understand. The most expensive things in all of Haddon belong to you, the man of the Fuller family. What could you possibly be unhappy about?"

At her signal, the housekeeper opened up a bespoke tailcoat. I had every luxury watch and limited-edition supercar that men across the country were scrambling to get their hands on.

However, only I knew that this was compensation for her infidelity. If I wore them out in public, it would be no different from parading my humiliation for the whole city to see.

I scoffed and poured my coffee over the suit. Everyone around us gasped.

Shelly stared at the splattered stains on her clothes, completely losing her patience with me. "Chad Weston, that's enough!"

She splashed her hot drink all over me, instantly causing blisters on my skin.

I was in so much pain that I clenched my hands involuntarily.

Shelly's breath hitched, but the ruthlessness in her eyes didn't waver. "Anthony is an intern at your TV station. It's best if you can mentor him, but if you can't, I can still make him famous myself."

She looked over at my trophies, her eyes filled with warning. She had plenty of ways to force a man like me, who valued his achievements so much, into submission.

I swallowed my bitterness and said with a slight smile, "Fine."

A hint of surprise appeared in her eyes. Then, she was interrupted by a phone call. She softened her tone as she answered it, "Okay, wait for me."

She hung up the phone and strode away.

I watched her leave, the excitement in her eyes impossible to hide. My fists clenched at the sight, and I called Jennifer Voss, who was both my senior and my lawyer. I said, "Help me get a divorce, and I'll honor our five-year agreement."

Chad's POVBefore the trial, I tried every means to avoid Shelly. Her influence in Haddon ran deep. I could run into her informants anywhere I went. Therefore, I temporarily stayed at Jennifer's house. She was highly respected in the legal profession, so no one would dare make a move against me.After two days of peace and quiet, the first person to come knocking on my door was Anthony. The moment the door opened, he charged at me like a madman. "Chad, how dare you call the police? Shelly is just mad at me. There's no way she'd stop protecting me! You're dead meat!"As soon as he said that, I punched him right in the face.Anthony was shocked, his mouth agape. "D-did you just hit me?"Immediately after, I punched him again. "Why wouldn't I hit you? And what makes you think I'm afraid of Shelly?"At first, I thought he was just Shelly's kept lover, like the rest of them. So, I hadn't taken him seriously, let alone hated him. But when I learned he was the one who had maimed Mom,

Chad's POVMy words made Shelly's eyes widen in shock. She yelled, "Chad! I only signed them on impulse. This doesn't count! I don't believe you're seriously doing this!"She had acted on impulse, but she had also been too confident. After all, for five years, I had loved her so much that I nearly lost myself. She had many lovers and humiliated me in front of the entire city. Yet, I forgave her every single time, even though it broke my heart, and I loathed myself for forgiving her. That was why she got used to my obedience. Even her housekeeper didn't believe I would leave. They all thought I was nothing without Shelly, and I had loved her so much. Naturally, Shelly felt the same way.Her words made my fists clench. I said, "When you chose to help the man who hurt my mom, you should've known this day would come! And besides, my mom's already dead!"A flicker of guilt crossed Shelly's eyes as she quickly grabbed my arm. "Chad, that was a misunderstanding. I thought Anthony didn't

Chad's POVThe moment the car exploded, Jennifer rushed over with her team and pulled me away. Even though I was saved, witnessing the car explode broke my heart. When I went ballistic, Jennifer pinned me down, whispering words of comfort to me.From that day on, I slept for days, as if I wanted to escape from reality. However, I still had to face it eventually. So, I composed myself and began preparing for Mom's funeral. Only after the burial did I break down in tears. "It's my fault…"Jennifer kept patting my shoulder. "Chad, this isn't your fault. Shelly and Anthony are to blame for this. It's definitely not your fault."When I learned that Anthony had abducted Mom, I desperately hoped that Shelly would stand by my side. At least, she should have believed me instead of repeatedly aiding the bad guy.So, when the car exploded, all my faith in her had vanished. As I left the cemetery, I instructed the groundskeeper, "If anyone asks, just say you've never seen me."I then bloc

Third-Person POV"Shelly…" Anthony uttered, covering his face in disbelief. The other staff members gathered around to watch.Shelly glared at him, her eyes bloodshot as she yelled, "Anthony, did you really abduct Chad's mom? Are you insane?"Everyone gasped.Anthony immediately panicked and stammered, "I-I didn't! I wouldn't dare hurt his mother! You have to believe me!"Before he could finish speaking, she threw a photo of the license plate at him. "See for yourself! I already disposed of this car. Who else could have bought it besides you? Anthony, was the car accident five years ago also part of your plan?"Anthony frantically grabbed her, his eyes bloodshot. "Shelly, don't let everyone hear that! Didn't you say that it was in the past? Don't bring it up, or I'll be kicked out of the station—"When Shelly heard these selfish words, she closed her eyes in despair.Back then, Anthony had looked just as pitiful as he begged her to save him. He kept saying he hadn't done it o

Third-Person POVWhen Shelly rushed back to the scene and saw the charred remains, she felt the world spin. "W-who is this?" she asked in a daze. The body was burned beyond recognition. It was a gruesome sight. The firefighter replied, "You said your husband got into this car. At this point, we suspect it's him, but we need to conduct further tests to confirm."In an instant, Shelly's mind went blank. Just moments ago, Chad had been alive and kicking. He had enough energy to argue with her. But then…She broke down. She lunged forward, only for the firefighter to hold her back. "Ms. Fuller, please calm down. We'll have the remains taken back for identification immediately."She stood there in a daze, leaning helplessly against the wall. "No! This can't be true!" she screamed frantically, crumpling to the floor in despair and sobbing uncontrollably. All these years, Chad had always been someone she was proud of. He switched careers from law to become a weather presenter. Then, he

She tried to rush into the flames. However, flames shot into the sky as thick smoke billowed everywhere, and the wave of scorching heat sent her reeling backward."Chad!" she screamed. The car was engulfed in flames. She stared at the wreckage in horror, but Chad was nowhere to be seen.Just then, Anthony coughed as he dragged her back to safety. "Shelly, the firefighters are putting out the fire. Chad will be fine."However, the fire raged on, and Shelly's heart tightened. Why had Chad rushed into that car? And why had it suddenly exploded? She could just make out the burning car through the flames. "Anthony, isn't this the car you drove back then?"When Anthony heard that, his eyes darted around. He stammered, "M-maybe they just look similar. Many cars look alike. It's probably just a co
