I SLOWLY MAKE MY way to the wash basin, feeling Katrina's eyes on me the whole time. I don't know why but I just feel that beneath her syrupy sweet smile, she doesn’t really like me.

Which is crazy to me because I don't even know her. I've only just met her for the first time tonight but she wears her disapproval of me on her sleeves.

“So?” She turns to me, a big wide smile on her face that didn't reach her eyes. “How does it feel having Massimo all to yourself?”

I frown in disbelief. “I have no idea what you're talking about.”

Katrina chuckles. “Funny that Elsa said the same thing to me and yet she had Massimo wrapped around her finger.”

What is her obsession with Massimo? I mean, isn't she engaged to his brother?

And who is this Elsa everyone keeps talking about?

“Who is she?” I ask tentatively. “This Elsa?”

Katrina's smile disappears. “Like I said, she's the one that had Massimo wrapped around her finger. It was pathetic really, how a powerful man like Massimo could bo

(Pamela)..I’M HALFWAY through my breakfast when my phone buzzes on the counter. I reach for it lazily, already knowing who it’ll be. And I'm not wrong. Bonnie.I swipe to answer and press the phone to my ear. “About time you called. I was starting to think you were done with me.”Her voice crackles through the line as bright as ever. “Excuse me? I’ve been abandoned in New York while you’re busy having fun with your six-foot-tall menace of a husband.”I snort. “Menace is putting it lightly.”“Oh, so we’re still pretending you don’t like him a little?”Jesus. Why did she have to ask that out loud?I sneak a peek at Massimo to see if he had heard. Luckily, he seems preoccupied with rinsing his dishes at the sink.“I will hang up on you.” Bonnie’s laughter rings through the phone, “You won’t. You love me.”“Only on Wednesdays.” I counter playfully. “Well, lucky for me, it’s Wednesday in New York.”“Fine,” I concede, leaning back in my seat and stuffing more avocado toast down my t

  • Be Careful With My Heart    Chapter 62

(Pamela)..YOU KNOW that feeling when you're in the middle of a deep sleep, and something or someone begins to irritate you till the point that you're have no choice but to wake up.Exactly. In my case, it happens to be a familiar tune being hummed under someone's breath, just out of rhythm enough to irritate me awake. I blink against the thin curtain of sunlight pouring through the window, my brain still foggy and trying to register where I am.Right. Not in NYC but in a master suite somewhere in Bali, far far away in Asia. The memories from last night come crashing back in bits and pieces: the exclusive dinner at the restaurant close to the beach, the little argument with Massimo both in and out the villa, building the pillow wall together and sleeping on opposite sides, someone leaking a video of us together with a different narrative. It just never ends, does it?The hum continues , a little louder now this time, as if to remind me of the reason why I woke up in the first pl

  • Be Careful With My Heart    Chapter 61

(Pamela)...BY THE TIME we return to the villa, I'm too exhausted and so bloated with food that all I want to do is to crawl somewhere safe and drift off to sleep. But then that simple wish gets crushed when I remember I have a roomate with whom I'll share a bed and a room with until the end of this vacation. Can anything get any worse than this?Speaking of my unwanted roommate, Massimo is already two steps ahead of me as he walks briskly down the hall with his overly long legs. He opens the door to the master suite and gestures slightly for me to enter first like a gentleman. How ironic.I pause in the doorway, eyeing the enormous bed that sits in the center of the room like a silent threat. The soft, pristine sheets and fluffy pillows call out to me and all I want is to collapse in them and have the best sleep of my life. But alas, I have to share. “You’re kidding me,” I mutter at last.He walks past me and tosses his wallet and phone onto the dresser. “What?”“You seriously e

(Massimo)..SHORTLY AFTER a miserable dinner thanks to an even more miserable lady herself, I receive a phone call from my publicist. I glance at Pamela, who is now sipping some coconut and looking over at the dancers from earlier, her eyes clouded with child-like wonder.Once again, I still cannot believe that this woman is still the same as the one who enjoyed picking a fight with me.“Excuse me, I need to take this,” I tell her.She nods absent-mindedly and I get up from my seat and walk briskly away from the restaurant, my feet sinking into the wet sand with each step. From a distance, I can see the waves crashing in, and some swimmers surfing each wave before it subsides only to do it all over again with the next one. I still have no idea why anyone would do this for fun. Perhaps, surfing isn't really my thing.“Veronica.”“Massimo, how are you doing? I was calling to check in on you and Pamela.”I exhale deeply as I run a hand through my hair. Where to begin?“So far, so g

(Pamela).."I MEAN I could stop if you don't like it,”Those last words from Massimo ended up being my wake-up call to this situation. Up until now, I never realised how mean I've always been to him.And he was right. I definitely answered him rudely, always wanting to argue, always bitter towards him. Did I have a valid reason to do these things? Yes.Was it the right thing to do? Probably not.Did I want to stop? Hell no.For some reason, I derived joy in simply wrecking Massimo to pieces. I liked to fight him and downplay his words and efforts. I don’t know if that makes me a terrible person but I've been through so much in the past few weeks that I needed to vent my anger in some way.Someone as powerful and wealthy as him needed to be humbled from time to time. The problem is that I never realised that sometimes my words and actions got to him.I always saw him as a cold and brooding man who'd turned off his emotions and just didn't care.It surprises me that he actually feel

(Pamela)..BY THE TIME eight o’clock rolls around, I’ve changed outfits three times. The first dress felt too flirty. The second was too big for my small frame. The third one which is what I’m currently wearing is dangerously close to slutty. But considering the fact that I’m pretending to be a rich man’s beloved new wife on a luxury honeymoon, slutty might just be the one to go for.I smooth my hands over the silky fabric one last time. It’s a coral-colored slip dress that hugs my curves in all the right places and leaves very little to the imagination. My makeup is light and my hair is in a loose ponytail. A spray of one of those expensive perfumes, some dangling earrings and heels because I refuse to look short next to that arrogant skyscraper of a man, and I'm all set and ready to go.Erik is fast asleep in his crib across the hall. Maria didn’t say much when I brought him back after our little tour of the resort. She just gave me a stiff nod and shut the door without looking a

(Pamela)..“Welcome to Villa Kalila,” one of the staff members lined up near the entrance greets us with a gracious bow. “Your rooms have been prepared.”Massimo doesn’t reply. He simply gestures for them to lead the way, his hand resting briefly on the small of my back.Inside, the villa is even more luxurious than I expected: The open windows and doors that lead to the ocean, the infinity pool right outside the sitting area, the smell of roses and lavender in the air. Plus, the sound of crashing waves drifting through the open doors gives the whole place a soothing vibe.I can already hear laughter and music outside. A group of European tourists in swimsuits are splashing around in a shared beachfront area beyond the gate. One woman in a red bikini sips from a coconut while lying across a sunbed, watching us curiously.“Your suite is this way,” the staff member says, breaking my thoughts. She leads us upstairs, past carved wooden panels and art pieces that are probably worth thou

(Pamela)..I WASN’T AWARE that I'd fallen asleep during the flight until the plane begins to descend with a soft, almost unnoticeable dip.The seatbelt light pings on, but I’m already awake by this point. I look across from me, at Massimo. He hadn’t really said much after takeoff. Just made a few calls, scrolled through his phone, and eventually dozed off with one arm folded behind his head like we weren’t flying to a private corner of the world to celebrate a marriage that neither of us fully understands.I yawn and then check the time on my cell phone. One-thirty p.m. That means we've been in the air for almost five hours now.Massimo stretches in a manly way, his shirt slightly wrinkled from dozing on his arm. His hair's a little dishevelled, but of course it only makes him look better. How is this even possible? He catches me staring and smirks like he knows something I don’t.“Sleep well, cara mia?”I ignore the endearment. “I didn’t sleep.”“Why not?”“Hard to relax when you’r

(Pamela)..ONE WEEK LATER.THE DRIVE TO THE AIRPORT is slower than usual. Maybe it’s the morning traffic, or maybe it’s because I’m hyper-aware of how quiet it is in the car.Massimo sits beside me in the backseat, scrolling through his phone like a man who's immune to nerves. Meanwhile, I’m trying not to pick at the edge of my nail polish because of how anxious I am. I don’t know if it’s the flight, the idea of being stuck with him for a whole week, or the paparazzi I spotted tailing us two blocks back.Erik and his nanny are seated right behind us. He’s humming a song under his breath and happily kicking his little feet while at it. At least someone’s excited about today.I let out a deep sigh and stare out the tinted window, watching as the city slowly gives way to the luxurious streets of New York, the private terminals, sleek buildings, and billboards selling perfumes and skin care products that I can’t even pronounce.Out of the corner of my eye, I feel Massimo shift.“You’r
