Christina POV
We ran out of the back door through the kitchen and immediately started to sprint away from the people chasing after us. I have never run so much in my life. We couldn't get to the car because they had swarmed around us, so the back door was the only possible escape route we had. My legs started to hurt, and I suddenly felt so dizzy. I could barely breathe. I’ve never been good at any physical activities. “Please, we need to rest!” I yell out. “We can’t!” Dad screams. “Peter, we have to shift!” Melissa shouts. I ignored what Melissa said, not because I didn’t understand it but because the guys behind us seemed to be getting closer. I guess this is the day I will die. I wouldn’t have minded dying if it wasn’t for the vast amount of drama that has happened in the past few hours. I need to at least understand why my mother was killed before I die. Hell—I want to avenge her. Becca looks back and sees that I’m slower than all of them. She then looked behind me, and I turned around to see that the people who were chasing after us were no longer people but.. animals. I couldn’t see them well, but with the way the ground was shaking, I was sure they were the same beasts that I saw my dad turn into. They run like they have some kind of cheetah genes. “Fuck it,” Becca says, and before I can even blink, she turns into a similar werewolf as my dad did earlier today. Hers is brown like Dad's. Melissa tells me to hop on before following suit and turning into a brown and white werewolf. I screamed so loud I’m pretty sure whoever was in the mountains near this forest heard me. For some reason, I’m more surprised now than I was when I first saw my dad turn into this creature. Perhaps my brain convinced me it wasn’t real, and now that I’m seeing it again, I can’t take it. Melissa, or rather— the brown and white werewolf, bends her head towards me and pushes her head up twice while looking at me as if she’s telling me that I should do something and then remembered. She had said hop on before she became this animal, so I quickly walked beside her and tried to climb on her back. I put my right leg over her and sat on her back. I try to ignore how it feels whenever her hair brushes my legs. I’m about to sit more comfortably, but Melissa immediately runs with me on her back. I started to scream because I was afraid of falling, so I leaned down like I was on a horse and held onto her hair with my hands. Becca and my dad are beside us. Melissa was running so fast I could barely see anything, so I closed my eyes. I stopped screaming when I realized I hadn't fallen off. I opened my eyes and started to smile because this was fun. I don’t think it’s a normal experience that humans have, but it’s like being on a roller coaster. I saw a tree branch right in front of me and quickly ducked. I looked back and saw that the werewolves had stopped all of a sudden, as if there was some kind of invisible wall that was not allowing them to pass through. They all turned around and ran away. I thought if I looked behind us, I would see that we had outrun them, not that they would willingly leave us. Something wasn't right. I looked forward and immediately gasped. Melissa stops running, and so do Becca and Dad. There’s a bunch of men and women sitting on trees pointing arrows at us. A few of them are in front of us, holding guns. There’s one man in the middle of them holding a gun as well. He seems to be the one in charge; for some reason, I can feel it as if he has some kind of aura. What have we gotten ourselves into? He’s staring straight at Becca. “Shift.” He says simply. I’ve been with them enough to know that he wants them to turn back to humans. I got off Melissa, and they turned back to humans. They were completely naked. To my surprise, Melissa was carrying the same bag I saw her get from the trunk of the car earlier. She pulls out the clothes that are inside and passes them to Melissa and Dad. The man who told them to shift walks up to Becca after she finishes putting on her clothes. “What’s happening?” I whisper to Dad, wondering what the hell is going on. “We’re in the wrong territory.” He says simply as if I’m supposed to understand what he meant. I think these people are different from the ones who tried to kill us earlier. Maybe that’s why they had run away from us when we entered this part of the forest; I guess it was the wrong territory. “What do you want from us?” Becca says after the man reaches her. “Mate.” He said simply. He leans his head towards her neck and smells her hair. She gasps and pushes him away. He suddenly turns into a werewolf. What the hell have I gotten into, this will never be normal to see. To my surprise, Becca walks up to him and taps his wolf's head while he purrs. Uh...What the hell..? “What is going on?” I whisper to Melissa this time. “He’s the beta. I can smell it.” She said. “He’s Becca’s mate and the second in command,” Dad says as if I’m still meant to understand. The black werewolf turns back to a human and is given clothes. “Is it normal for you guys to be naked in front of each other?” I ask while gawking at the organ dangling between his legs. “Sort of,” Melissa whispers back. The man finally wears his clothes and smiles at us. “I’m the beta of the River Bay pack. Alpha Xavier will be delighted to know that one of his intruders happened to be my mate.” What the hell does that even mean? Dad looks at me, and I look at him. He sees how confused I am and smiles. “An Alpha is like the ruler of a pack. And a pack is like a kingdom. He’s saying that Becca is his soulmate.” I nodded at my dad's weird ass explanation. “Who are these three?” The man asks Becca. He speaks with his hands behind him. “My sisters and my uncle.” She lies. “As much as I fancy you, mate, it isn’t good to lie.” he smiles at Becca before he continues his speech. “I can smell that the lady beside you is your sister. However, the other two.. not very much. The man is a rogue, and the girl next to him is an omega.” He says. How could he tell by simply smelling us? And what the hell is an omega... What the hell does that mean? The man has dark hair and beautiful blue eyes. He’s muscular but Lean at the same time. He walked up to me and my dad and nodded once, but it didn’t look like he was nodding at us. Before we could react, a black hood was put over my head and my dad's head and the last thing I heard before falling unconscious was Melissa and Becca’s scream.Christina's povMelissa added the last silver hairpin to my elegant bun and took a step back, admiring her work. "Well, look at you. Some months ago, you were stomping around refusing to be a Luna, and now you're glowing with confidence."I laughed with them. The funny part was that they were right. Suddenly, I felt so sure of whatever I wanted to do and the way forward for me. I felt so sure when I said yes to Marcel a week ago.I stood in front of the mirror while smiling as I turned to observe my reflection. The formal robes felt soft against my body while the silver clasp kept the gown in place. The dress was marvelous itself—drab white shot through with silver embroidery in lacy moon patterns down the bodice and sleeves. It cinched at my waist before cascading away in airy, weightless folds. And to crown it all, a silver circle rested on my head.I looked divine. I would never know how Marcel managed to have this dress custom-made for me within a week, but I was grateful for it.
Author's povJust as the words left Pierce's mouth, a sharp pain erupted in Becca's throat. The chains around her hands tightened so much that she had to scream. Her feet hung inches above the floor, and she had never felt so powerless. On the other side, Melissa was not doing any better. Pierce curled her fingers by her side between them as though she were holding on to an unseen rope. Something about her younger sister being tortured just like she was—by their mother, no less—made Becca snap. She ignored the intense pain and cried out, "Mother, stop!"To think that this was the person they refused to give up on, the person she went through the risk of bargaining with the alpha just to reach. How naive she was.Christina found herself screaming at the pain in her expression. "What are you doing? Stop it!"Pierce only smiled, not bothering to listen to her daughter's words. "Do you think you could betray me and walk away unharmed? You chose her over me, you both, and your father. Don
Marcel's povThe air in the patio was thick with tension, as I stared at each of the four elders sitting around the table. They met my gaze expectantly, even though I figured they already knew the reason I had called for the meeting.A day ago, I let Becca and Melissa leave with Isaac, not because he wanted to take his mate away, but because they have a greater purpose to serve, speaking with Pierce. They had until today to give me an update and change the course that I knew this meeting would inevitably reach, and yet they were silent. All I got to indicate their existence was a call from Becca to tell me that they had arrived at their destination. And since then, there has been nothing. I didn't like that. If they brought bad news that their mother refused to listen to reason, I would appreciate it better.I wasn't one to go back on my words. The ultimatum had reached its end, and the council meeting would hold, and so would the war. In my head, this meeting was basically to draw as
Christina's povAll I noticed initially was the heat of the flames around me. The colors surrounding me were not blue but aggressive orange and they pervaded the entire space. Multiple screams pierced the environment similar to tones while I held my head with my hands to block the noises from entering.A heavy odor of burning fur combined with blood filled the air while the sky turned strangely into a sickly red hue. Ranges of wolves escaped in all directions while their struggling bodies produced the sounds of wounded howling. I stood in the middle of a battlefield. I sensed a presence then I turned to my side and saw a radiant figure. The figure appeared completely unfamiliar without any recognizable characteristics because its flowing garments obstructed my sight. I only understood that the figure shined silver yet this surprised me."Christina," a soft voice whispered. I turned around in a full circle, but there was no one else around me.No one but this glowing person. When I r
Christina's povMy breathing became uneven while my heart raced but the feelings had nothing to do with fear or anger. I was completely unfamiliar with the source of my sudden nervous state.I sat up, unable to sleep. For the last few minutes I had been tossing on my bed while trying to relax my mind but every attempt resulted in more tension swirling through my thoughts. What was going on?Perhaps I was worried because of Marcel. He had brushed me off when I tried to stop him from leaving. Maybe that was good since I had no idea what I was going to say to him anyway, but it hurt nonetheless.I erased some of the cold sweat from my forehead. It was extremely strange that I was sweating despite the coolness in the air. This was much more than a misunderstanding with Marcel. Something was off.Unable to bear it anymore, I pushed off my bed and rushed towards the window. Both of my sisters were still fast asleep, so I was not interrupted. When I opened the windows a thick black cloud fro
Marcel's povWithout an answer, I carefully turned my body to look at her. At that moment Christina stood with her lips slightly open as she panted irregularly. During that moment the forceful wind simply vanished but the surrounding environment remained entirely unrestful.I asked her a simple question. Since she was so hell-bent on convincing me before I even talked with Isaac, answering shouldn't be hard. But her hesitation told me everything. Christina refused to let them depart from her side. The fiery defiance showed her unwillingness to accept their leaving.I scoffed, unable to believe what was going on right now. She accused me of being heartless, of keeping them here against their will, and yet she couldn't even find the strength to do the opposite. How hypocritical of her.I turned away, deciding that I would not repeat her mistake and say something I would regret. It would be better if I just left. Just as I started to walk away, I felt her hand brush my wrist slightly, bu
