By Saturday morning, the number on my wrist had turned into 6.

Six days.

And apparently, my mom had decided today was the perfect day to act like a parent.

“So you must be Caelan.”

Mom stood from the couch, coffee cup in hand, giving Caelan that corporate stare she used on people she wanted to intimidate politely.

Caelan straightened. “Yes, ma’am.”

“Call me Mara,” she said, offering her hand.

He shook it. Calm face. Polite voice. Pero nakita ko yung tension sa jaw niya.

“Caelan Vasquez,” Mom re

  • Before You Let Go   Epilogue

Nine Years Later“Merry Christmas!”The front door of Kape Amparo flew open, and just like that, the whole place exploded into noise.People came in carrying gifts, foil-covered trays, cake boxes, bags of bread, and enough food para pakainin yata ang kalahati ng barangay. Someone laughed too loudly. Someone shouted for help with the drinks. Someone’s kid almost dropped a container of spaghetti near the counter.Basically, a normal Christmas.“Lyra!”Tita Lani pulled me into a tight hug the second she saw me. “Ang ganda mo naman ngayon.”I laughed. “Wow. Ngayon lang?”“Alam mo naman ibig kong sabihin.”Behind her, Rafi entered with two bags of ice and the same annoying grin he had nine years ago. “Ate Lyra, blink twice kung pinilit ka ni Caelan mag-host.”“Blinking once lang,” I said. “Half-forced.”“Liar,” Caelan called from near the old fireplace, camera hanging from his neck.I turned to glare at him. “Wala kang ambag sa pagluluto.”“I documented the process.”“You took pictures of

Beep.Beep.Beep.God, I hated that sound.Gusto kong matulog ulit. Just sleep. Walang pain, walang fear, walang Ruin, walang countdown. Just nothing.Nothing sounded really good right now.Pero, the beeping wouldn’t stop.My whole body felt wrong. Heavy. Sore. Parang isang malaking bruise ako na humihinga lang out of spite.Hospital.The thought came slowly.I was in a hospital.I remembered the road. The rain. The car. Ruin smiling behind the windshield. Then Death. Then Jun.Then nothing.“…she’s lucky she made it through surgery,” a woman said somewhere near me. “The next twenty-four hours still matter, pero waking up would be a good sign.”“She will wake up, right?” Mom’s voice.Mom sounded broken.I had never heard her like that before.“We’re hoping she will,” the woman answered gently. “But she had a major trauma. Concussion, fractured arm, bruised ribs, internal bleeding. Her heart stopped once in the ER.”Oh.So that happened. The room went quiet after that except for Mom’s

  • Before You Let Go   Chapter 31: The Room Between

“Lyra. Wake up.”Ayoko.For the first time in what felt like forever, wala akong nararamdaman. No pain. No fear. No countdown burning beneath my sleeve. No Ruin. No speeding cars. No screams.Just quiet. The kind I'd been chasing for so long, I almost didn't recognize it.And honestly?I thought I'd earned it.“Lyra Villanueva,” the voice said again, firmer this time. “You cannot stay asleep here.”I groaned. “Five more minutes.”A pause. Then, “You are impossible.”That voice. My eyes opened.Death was leaning over me.White barong. Dark eyes. Same calm face, except this time, may sadness doon na hindi niya kayang itago.I shot up too fast.Big mistake. The room spun.“Easy,” Death said, catching my shoulder. “Your soul is still adjusting.”“My what?”Then I looked around.I was lying on a narrow bed in a small white room. White walls. White floor. No windows. No furniture except the bed. It looked like a hospital room someone forgot to finish.I looked down.Same clothes.Same jacke

  • Before You Let Go   Chapter 30: The Rain

Noong bata pa ako, I used to think na kapag umulan sa araw na namatay ang isang tao, ibig sabihin, may nalulungkot somewhere.Maybe heaven.Maybe the universe.Maybe yung mga taong hindi marunong magsabi ng I love you habang may chance pa.I always thought that if I were the one to disappear someday, I hoped it would rain. So maybe, just maybe, the rain could wash away everything I'd leave behind. The guilt. The regrets. The words I never had the courage to say.And now, rain was falling on my face.Cool droplets touched my cheeks while my body lay broken on the road, surrounded by screams I could barely hear.So this was it.This was how I died. Not in bed. Not old. Not after a long life full of memories.Six days before my seventeenth birthday.Six days before Caelan was supposed to die.Funny, in a horrible way.I tried to breathe, pero parang may mabigat na nakadagan sa dibdib ko. Every inhale felt wrong. Every sound came from far away, like I was underwater.Someone was crying.S

  • Before You Let Go   Chapter 29: Cars Do Not Always Stop

My first instinct was to move.Syempre naman.May kotse na rumaragasa straight toward me. Normal people would jump back, scream, run, do anything.Pero hindi gumalaw yung katawan ko.My feet stayed glued to the road like someone had nailed me there. I tried to step back, tried to force my knees to bend, pero wala. Parang may invisible hands na nakahawak sa ankles ko, keeping me exactly where Ruin wanted me.The horn screamed.Someone shouted. Then I saw him.Behind the windshield.Gray suit. Pale hair. One dark eye, one light.Ruin smiled. And then the car hit me.There was no movie-like slow music. No dramatic pause. No perfect last thought.Just impact.White pain flashed through my whole body. The air was knocked out of my lungs so hard I couldn’t even scream. For one awful second, I felt weightless, like the world had thrown me away. Then I hit something hard.A parked car, maybe.Glass cracked somewhere. Metal groaned. My body rolled, fell, and the pavement caught me without merc

Pasta, breadsticks, cannoli, the whole awkward package.Dad arrived halfway through, still in office clothes.“Caelan,” he g
