ARIANA’S POV

The morning sun was just beginning to paint the sky pale gold when I woke. For a moment, I lay still, staring at the ceiling, my mind replaying every second of the previous night — the way Damon’s hand felt on my waist, the warmth of his voice near my ear, the split second when his eyes had softened, as if he’d forgotten himself. Then I shook my head, pushing the thoughts away. It was all an act. A performance. Don’t be foolish enough to mistake it for real.

I dressed quickly in a simple cream dress, something modest and unassuming — exactly what I was supposed to be. Downstairs, the house was quiet. I walked into the dining room, expecting it to be empty. But Damon was there.

He sat at the head of the long table, reading a newspaper, a half-empty cup of coffee beside him. He looked devastatingly handsome in a crisp white shirt and dark trousers, his sleeves rolled up to reveal strong forearms, his dark hair slightly messy as if he’d run a hand through it too many times. The sight of him made my heart do that stupid, traitorous flutter again.

I hesitated in the doorway, unsure whether to step forward or slip away quietly. He looked up then, and our eyes met. For a heartbeat, the air between us shifted — charged, unspoken — before he looked back down at his paper, his voice cool and distant.

“Good morning, Ariana. Sit. Eat. You have a long day ahead of you.”

I walked to the chair across from him, keeping my movements steady. “Long day?”

He folded the newspaper and set it aside, finally giving me his full attention. “I have a meeting this morning that will run through lunch. This afternoon, my mother is coming to visit. She wants to see how you’ve settled in. Be polite. Be respectful. And whatever you do — don’t let her see anything less than perfect.”

My stomach tightened. “Your mother? She’s never met me, has she?”

“Exactly. Which means she has no expectations — and no mercy if you disappoint her.” He took a sip of coffee, his expression unreadable. “My mother is a formidable woman, Ariana. She sees through lies. She sees through masks. So be careful. Be very careful.”

The warning hung in the air, heavy and clear. Don’t let her see the truth. Don’t let her see us.

By mid-afternoon, the nervousness I’d been fighting all day had settled deep in my bones. I stood in the living room, straightening my dress for the tenth time, when the front doors opened.

Mrs. Eleanor Sterling walked in, and the air in the room seemed to change. She was tall, elegant, with silver hair perfectly styled and eyes so sharp they felt like they could cut right through you. She was everything Damon was — powerful, commanding, impossibly intimidating — but where he was storm, she was ice.

“Mother,” Damon said, standing and kissing her cheek. “You’re early.”

“Punctual, Damon. There’s a difference.” Her gaze swept past him and landed on me — slow, deliberate, assessing every inch of me from head to toe. “And this must be the girl.”

I stepped forward, my knees weak but my voice steady. “I’m Ariana, Mrs. Sterling. It’s an honor to meet you.”

She didn’t smile. She didn’t extend her hand. She just looked at me, as if searching for something wrong, something unworthy. “Honor? That’s a strong word for an arrangement, don’t you think? Sit. Both of you. I have questions, and I expect honest answers.”

For the next hour, I felt like I was under a microscope. She asked about my family, my education, my life before this — every question sharp, every follow-up designed to catch me off guard. Damon sat beside me, silent, watching, letting me handle it on my own. Until Mrs. Sterling leaned forward, her gaze cutting straight to the heart of it.

“Tell me, Ariana — do you even love my son?”

The question hung there, heavy and sudden. I froze. Beside me, Damon went perfectly still.

“I —” I started, my throat dry. “Respect is the foundation of any marriage, Mrs. Sterling. I have great respect for Damon.”

“Respect.” She scoffed softly. “Respect does not build a marriage, girl. Respect does not keep two people together when everything falls apart. I asked if you love him.”

I looked at Damon, desperate for some sign — a nod, a signal, anything. But he was staring straight ahead, his face an unreadable mask. Say what we agreed. Say it’s too soon. Say anything.

“I think,” I said slowly, my voice trembling only slightly, “that love is something that grows. It isn’t always there from the start. Sometimes… sometimes it takes time to find its way.”

Mrs. Sterling studied me for a long, agonizing moment. Then, to my shock, her expression softened — just a fraction. “That’s an honest answer. Better than the lies I expected. But let me warn you — my son is not an easy man to love. He has built walls around his heart that no one has ever managed to tear down. If you think you can change him… you are already defeated.”

With that, she stood, smoothing her skirt. “I will leave you two now. Damon — I will expect you at the family dinner next week. Bring her. I want to see how she fares when more eyes are watching.”

She walked out, and the moment the doors closed behind her, I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for hours. My hands were shaking.

Damon stood slowly, running a hand through his hair. “That went… better than I expected.”

“Is that supposed to be a compliment?” I asked, before I could stop myself.

He looked at me, surprised by my tone. “It was meant to be an observation. She’s difficult, Ariana. Most people crumble within five minutes. You didn’t.” There was a pause, then — “You handled yourself well.”

It was small. It was barely anything. But it was something. And for the first time, I didn’t feel quite so alone in this house.

That evening, something shifted between us. We found ourselves in the library, both reaching for a book at the same time. Our hands brushed, and again — that spark, that jolt, that strange, electric pull neither of us could explain. He pulled back first, clearing his throat, but he didn’t walk away.

“You stood your ground today,” he said, leaning against the bookshelf, his voice quieter, softer than I’d ever heard it. “Against her. Most people apologize before she even finishes speaking.”

“I had nothing to apologize for,” I said quietly. “I’m not sorry for being here. I’m not sorry for trying.”

He looked at me then — really looked at me — and for the first time, I didn’t see the cold, indifferent billionaire. I saw something else. Something tired. Something lonely.

“Why?” he asked, so softly I almost didn’t hear it. “Why try so hard? You know how this ends. Two years and then… nothing. Why invest your heart in something that’s going to break?”

The question hung there, raw and honest. I took a step closer, my heart pounding. “Because maybe… maybe I don’t want it to end that way. Maybe for the first time in my life, I’m hoping for something different.”

He went still. His eyes searched mine, as if looking for the lie, the trick, the hidden agenda. But there was none. Just truth.

“Ariana,” he whispered, and my name on his lips sounded different — not formal, not distant, but something closer to tender. “You shouldn’t say things like that. Not to me. I’m not… I’m not the man you think I am.”

“Then show me who you really are,” I challenged gently. “Stop hiding behind the mask, Damon. Let me see the man underneath.”

For a heartbeat, I thought he would. I thought he would step closer, reach for me, let all the walls come crashing down. But then — his expression hardened. The coldness returned, the mask sliding back into place, sealing him off once more.

“It’s late,” he said, turning away sharply. “We both have work tomorrow. Goodnight, Ariana.”

He walked out, leaving me standing alone in the dim library, my heart aching but also — impossibly — hopeful. He’s fighting it. He’s fighting himself. Which means… there’s something there to fight for.

I left the library slowly, walking back to my room, but as I passed his door, I paused. Through the wood, so faint I almost missed it, I heard his voice — quiet, rough, speaking to himself in the dark.

“Why did it have to be you?”

ARIANA’S POVThe silence in the house felt heavier than ever before. I stood by the phone long after the line went dead, my hand still gripping the receiver, my mind replaying every cold word he’d spoken. A mistake. A moment of weakness. Nothing has changed. But his voice — it wasn’t the voice of a man who’d changed his mind. It was the voice of a man who was terrified. Terrified for me.I paced the living room, my thoughts racing. He’d told me to lock the doors. Not to let anyone in. Then he’d called and pushed me away, all while sounding like he was holding his breath, like someone was listening. He’s not doing this because he wants to. He’s doing this to protect me.That realization hit me harder than any heartbreak ever could. And with it came a fierce, unshakable resolve. If he was fighting something alone — something dangerous — I wouldn’t let him. Not anymore.I grabbed my phone and dialed his number. Straight to voicemail. I tried again. • Behind The Facade   Chapter 4

ARIANA’S POVI woke to sunlight spilling softly across the bed, and for a moment, I simply lay there, breathing in the familiar scent of rain and expensive cologne. A warm, heavy arm draped over my waist pulled me gently backward, and my heart gave a soft, happy flutter. Damon was beside me — in my bed, his head resting on the same pillow, his breathing slow and steady as he slept. His dark hair fell over his forehead, and his usual stern expression had softened into something peaceful, almost boyish.I turned slowly, careful not to wake him, and studied him in the quiet morning light. This was the man the world never saw — not the ruthless billionaire, not the cold businessman, but a man who looked tired, and strong, and undeniably real. My heart ached with a sudden, fierce tenderness. How did I get here? How did the woman who signed a contract to save her family end up falling in love with the one man she was never supposed to want?As if sensing my gaze, his eyes fluttered open. Fo

  • Behind The Facade   Chapter 3

ARIANA’S POVThe days that followed settled into a strange, fragile rhythm. Damon and I still slept in separate bedrooms, still lived largely separate lives — but the silence between us had softened. Sometimes, he’d wait for me in the dining room before breakfast. Sometimes, he’d leave a single white rose on the kitchen counter without a note, as if it had appeared there by accident. Sometimes, when he thought I wasn’t looking, I’d catch him watching me — not with indifference, but with something that looked a lot like longing.I told myself not to read too much into it. He’s lonely. That’s all. It doesn’t mean he cares. But my heart — stubborn, foolish, hopeful — refused to listen. It was a rainy Tuesday evening when everything changed. The sky turned dark by late afternoon, heavy with storm clouds, and by seven o’clock, thunder shook the windows and rain lashed against the glass. I sat in the living room, reading by the fireplace, when the front door slammed open.Damon walked in —

  • Behind The Facade   Chapter 1

ARIANA’S POVThe pen felt heavy in my hand as I stared at the document spread across the polished mahogany table. The golden afternoon light filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the elegant script — but every word felt like a chain. A chain I was voluntarily locking around my own neck.Across from me sat Damon Sterling. He leaned back in his leather chair, one leg crossed over the other, watching me with eyes the color of storm clouds — intense, unreadable, and utterly indifferent. He was everything the world feared and admired: ruthless billionaire, brilliant strategist, a man who could build empires and crush rivals without blinking. And now… he was about to become my husband. Not out of love. But out of necessity.“Sign, Ariana,” he said, his voice low and smooth, yet sharp enough to cut glass. “We both know there is no other choice. Your family’s company is collapsing. My name and resources will save it. In exchange, you give me exactly what I need: a wife.
