ARIANA’S POV

I woke to sunlight spilling softly across the bed, and for a moment, I simply lay there, breathing in the familiar scent of rain and expensive cologne. A warm, heavy arm draped over my waist pulled me gently backward, and my heart gave a soft, happy flutter. Damon was beside me — in my bed, his head resting on the same pillow, his breathing slow and steady as he slept. His dark hair fell over his forehead, and his usual stern expression had softened into something peaceful, almost boyish.

I turned slowly, careful not to wake him, and studied him in the quiet morning light. This was the man the world never saw — not the ruthless billionaire, not the cold businessman, but a man who looked tired, and strong, and undeniably real. My heart ached with a sudden, fierce tenderness. How did I get here? How did the woman who signed a contract to save her family end up falling in love with the one man she was never supposed to want?

As if sensing my gaze, his eyes fluttered open. For a heartbeat, there was confusion — then recognition — and then something warm and unguarded settled in his eyes. He didn’t pull away. He didn’t put up his walls. He just lifted a hand, brushed a strand of hair from my face, and smiled — a real smile, bright and genuine, reaching all the way to his eyes.

“Good morning,” he whispered, his voice rough with sleep.

“Good morning,” I replied, my heart racing.

He shifted closer, propping himself up on one elbow, his gaze sweeping over me with a quiet, possessive warmth. “I half-expected you to be gone when I woke up. Or for me to wake up and realize it was all a dream.”

“I’m here,” I said softly. “And it wasn’t a dream.”

He lowered his head and kissed me — slow, gentle, nothing like the hungry desperation of the night before. This kiss was a promise. A beginning. When he pulled back, his expression had grown serious.

“Ariana… what happened last night changes everything. You know that, right? The contract — the agreement — none of it applies anymore. Not for me. I don’t want a business arrangement. I want you. All of you. But I need you to be sure. Because once we cross this line… there’s no going back. I won’t be able to treat you like a wife in name only. I won’t be able to hold back.”

I lifted my hand to his face, tracing the line of his jaw. “I don’t want you to hold back, Damon. I’ve never been more sure of anything.”

He covered my hand with his own, pressing a kiss to my palm. “Then we do this properly. We tell everyone. My mother, the board — everyone. No more secrets. No more pretending. We are husband and wife in every way that matters.”

The morning unfolded in a soft, golden haze. We ate breakfast together — not at opposite ends of the table, but side by side, our knees brushing beneath it, our hands touching whenever we could. He told me stories about his childhood — about his father’s high expectations, about the loneliness of growing up in a house full of people but no family. I told him about mine — about my mother’s warmth, about the quiet dreams I’d never dared to speak aloud. For the first time, it felt like we were truly building something together.

But reality had a way of slipping back in.

Around mid-morning, his phone buzzed insistently on the table. He glanced at the screen, and his expression shifted — just a fraction, but I noticed. He didn’t answer it immediately. Instead, he set it face-down and reached for my hand.

“I have to go in,” he said, his voice tight. “Something came up at the office. But I’ll be back early. We’ll talk about what to do — about telling everyone, about rewriting the agreement, about everything. I promise.”

He kissed me then — quick, warm, lingering just enough to leave me wanting more — and stood up. “Lock the doors. Don’t let anyone in until I’m back. I’ll be as fast as I can.”

“Be careful,” I said, and he nodded before walking out the door.

I watched him leave through the window, his figure striding toward his car, confident and powerful. But as he drove away, a strange, uneasy feeling settled in my stomach. Lock the doors. Don’t let anyone in. Why would he say that? Unless… unless he knew something I didn’t. Unless the danger he’d spoken of the night before wasn’t just about business rivals — it was real. And it was getting closer.

The hours passed slowly. I busied myself cleaning the kitchen, then sat in the living room reading, but my mind kept drifting back to his words. Don’t let anyone in. Every time a car passed on the road outside, every time the wind rattled the windows, my heart skipped a beat. I kept checking the door locks, kept glancing toward the driveway, waiting for his car to return.

By late afternoon, the sun began to dip low, painting the sky in shades of orange and deep violet. And still, he hadn’t come back.

I stood up and walked to the window, my hands clasped tightly together. Something was wrong. I could feel it in the air — a heavy, waiting silence that felt nothing like peace.

Then the phone rang.

It was the landline — the one that almost never rang. My heart hammered against my ribs as I walked to it and lifted the receiver.

“Hello?”

“Ariana.”

It was Damon. But his voice wasn’t warm. It wasn’t gentle. It was cold, distant, and terrifyingly formal.

“Damon?” My voice trembled. “Where are you? Is everything all right?”

There was a pause — long, heavy, filled with unspoken things. Then he spoke, and every word felt like a blade.

“I’ve been thinking. About last night. It was a mistake. We were both emotional. Tired. It shouldn’t have happened.”

The floor seemed to tilt beneath my feet. “A mistake?”

“Yes. A lapse in judgment. Nothing more. The contract still stands, Ariana. One year. We fulfill our obligations, and then we go our separate ways. Nothing has changed. Nothing will change.”

I gripped the counter, my knuckles turning white. “But you said… you said it wasn’t just a deal anymore. You said you wanted me.”

“I was wrong,” he said, and his voice was flat, final, as if he were discussing a business transaction. “Let’s not confuse a moment of weakness with reality. You’re here to save your family. I’m here to secure my position. That’s all this ever was. Don’t read anything more into it.”

“Damon, please —”

“I have to go,” he cut me off sharply. “And Ariana? Stay in your room tonight. I won’t be home. It’s better if we keep our distance from now on.”

The line went dead.

I stood there, the receiver still in my hand, staring at nothing as tears blurred my vision. A mistake. A moment of weakness. Nothing has changed. How could he say that? How could he kiss me, hold me, tell me he loved me — and then act as if none of it ever happened?

I sank to the floor, the cold tile biting into my knees, and let the tears come. But beneath the heartbreak, beneath the confusion, something else began to take root. A quiet, stubborn anger. He didn’t just change his mind. Something happened. Something made him pull away this fast, this hard. And whatever it is… I’m not going to let him face it alone.

I wiped my eyes and stood up, my hands still trembling but my resolve hardening into something unbreakable. He’s hiding something. And I’m going to find out what it is.

ARIANA’S POVThe silence in the house felt heavier than ever before. I stood by the phone long after the line went dead, my hand still gripping the receiver, my mind replaying every cold word he’d spoken. A mistake. A moment of weakness. Nothing has changed. But his voice — it wasn’t the voice of a man who’d changed his mind. It was the voice of a man who was terrified. Terrified for me.I paced the living room, my thoughts racing. He’d told me to lock the doors. Not to let anyone in. Then he’d called and pushed me away, all while sounding like he was holding his breath, like someone was listening. He’s not doing this because he wants to. He’s doing this to protect me.That realization hit me harder than any heartbreak ever could. And with it came a fierce, unshakable resolve. If he was fighting something alone — something dangerous — I wouldn’t let him. Not anymore.I grabbed my phone and dialed his number. Straight to voicemail. I tried again. • Behind The Facade   Chapter 3

ARIANA’S POVThe days that followed settled into a strange, fragile rhythm. Damon and I still slept in separate bedrooms, still lived largely separate lives — but the silence between us had softened. Sometimes, he’d wait for me in the dining room before breakfast. Sometimes, he’d leave a single white rose on the kitchen counter without a note, as if it had appeared there by accident. Sometimes, when he thought I wasn’t looking, I’d catch him watching me — not with indifference, but with something that looked a lot like longing.I told myself not to read too much into it. He’s lonely. That’s all. It doesn’t mean he cares. But my heart — stubborn, foolish, hopeful — refused to listen. It was a rainy Tuesday evening when everything changed. The sky turned dark by late afternoon, heavy with storm clouds, and by seven o’clock, thunder shook the windows and rain lashed against the glass. I sat in the living room, reading by the fireplace, when the front door slammed open.Damon walked in —

ARIANA’S POVThe morning sun was just beginning to paint the sky pale gold when I woke. For a moment, I lay still, staring at the ceiling, my mind replaying every second of the previous night — the way Damon’s hand felt on my waist, the warmth of his voice near my ear, the split second when his eyes had softened, as if he’d forgotten himself. Then I shook my head, pushing the thoughts away. It was all an act. A performance. Don’t be foolish enough to mistake it for real.I dressed quickly in a simple cream dress, something modest and unassuming — exactly what I was supposed to be. Downstairs, the house was quiet. I walked into the dining room, expecting it to be empty. But Damon was there. He sat at the head of the long table, reading a newspaper, a half-empty cup of coffee beside him. He looked devastatingly handsome in a crisp white shirt and dark trousers, his sleeves rolled up to reveal strong forearms, his dark hair slightly messy as if he’d run a hand through it too many times.

  • Behind The Facade   Chapter 1

ARIANA’S POVThe pen felt heavy in my hand as I stared at the document spread across the polished mahogany table. The golden afternoon light filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the elegant script — but every word felt like a chain. A chain I was voluntarily locking around my own neck.Across from me sat Damon Sterling. He leaned back in his leather chair, one leg crossed over the other, watching me with eyes the color of storm clouds — intense, unreadable, and utterly indifferent. He was everything the world feared and admired: ruthless billionaire, brilliant strategist, a man who could build empires and crush rivals without blinking. And now… he was about to become my husband. Not out of love. But out of necessity.“Sign, Ariana,” he said, his voice low and smooth, yet sharp enough to cut glass. “We both know there is no other choice. Your family’s company is collapsing. My name and resources will save it. In exchange, you give me exactly what I need: a wife.
